How would S Harrison fared against the rival f/w champs?

Post by Autobarn »

I feel that Scott Harrison is current enough, and British enough, to not have this thread moved...There was a lot of good title holders while Scott held the WBO crown. Chris John, Juan Manuel Marquez, Injin Chi. And there were others who moved up because Scott wouldn't turn up to fight 'em - namely Gairy St Clair and Joan Guzman who went up to super feather to win title belts.

I've left off Barrera and Pacquiao and Morales because they were genuine superstars and Scott was always going to be off their radar. Unrealistic fights. Whereas JMM was going to challenge Scott's WBO (even taking the belt SH vacated), John wasn't considered elite til he beat Marquez last year, St Clair and Guzman were going to fight Scott but he pulled out...

How would Scott have done vs these men?

Marquez, beats Harrison, and quite possibly stopped him. Can do everything Polo can do, but with better speed, technique and I think the edge in punch power.

Harrison isn't a good mover, and Marquez is one of the worst opponents for him.

Chi, I was never sure about. Chi is a similar fighter to Harrison, physically very imposing, though perhaps a little faster than Harrison, and even more aggressive.

Harrison always liked guys who stood in front of him, but I wonder whether in Chi he would have been up against a fighter who could physically match him. Chi took everything Brodie dished out against him, and came roaring back to give Brodie a whupping in their first match, and crushed him in the rematch.

This would have been a great fight, no doubt about it. I JUST side with Chi, but only just.

Chris John, don't know enough about his style to comment.

John is one of the tallest featherweights around and at his best keeps opponents at the end of a whipping jab and fast, relaxed looking right hands. He also has some clever footwork, but CAN trade to much against lesser opponents. What impressed me is that he made Marquez look like a one dimensional banger and John's jabs were hurtful enough to batter the Mexican's eye.

I think John plasters him from outside and swells us Harrison's face. I actually think Harrison beats Chi - Chi was as strong as Scott but his punch delivery is awful. Marquez would put a beating on Harrison. Guzman would have been very thin, fragile at featherweight. He may not have had the strength/workrate to last, despite power at lower weights. St Clair would probably have played right into Harrison by applying pressure from a crouch.

All the names you mentioned would have handed him his arse, and I'd have loved to have seen them do it...

He was handpicked smaller guys (he always looked v strong at the weight) and when he stepped up he was beaten - even Medina beat him and I had Polo beating him - or he didn't show up and got arrested...

Nicky Cook would have beaten him on pts.....

He's a waste of time.

The first Chi/Brodie fight wasn't a whupping? In fact Chi was grimacing everytime Brodie went for his belly. I thought I was watching 'Rocky' for a while at the time :TU:
As for the 'accidental headbutt'(point deducted from Brodie) that didn't even produce a cut just a graze that was confirmed afterwards, that cost Brodie the win.

Brodie wasn't the same after I grant you so the comparison that I'm about to make doesn't quite add up but anyway...
Brodie couldn't hurt Harrison so on the that 'loose' basis I suggest he has the beating of Chi.
Harrison may be slow but even he could see Chi punches coming.

Guzman,Marquez shit all all over him and I agree John jabs his face off.

I would like to have seen the Cook fight though, I don't rate Cook like others seem to and I'd be suprised if he holds a world title for anywhere as long as Harrison did(that's if he has it in him to win one anyway)

A focused Harrison drags Cook into a fight and breaks him down. :TU:

Cook thus far is no Brodie. We've not seen enough of Cook to suggest he could have beaten Harrison (a mentally ready one)...Got to feel sorry for Cook though, as he was stiffed the way that Guzman and St Clair were stiffed i.e Harrison not willing/able to fight 'em!

John and Marquez would probably be Scott's worst nightmare. Guzman probably a bit too thin and drained - when Harrison pulled out he was nearly a lightweight in the next fight. Joan's weight discipline is horrid and his workrate suffers.

Strangely, I'm not too fussed about the Harrison v Polo result. I didn't object to a draw. Polo wasn't the busiest of fighters and he did keep taking those single shots.

The plodding Harrison would of definitely lost to Marquez. The more he made Featherweight the more his mobility suffered.

Not seen the rest, being told Guzman Is overrated though.

I have to admit I fornicating hate the guy, him and Herbie Hide..

I just can't give a well rounded opinion when it comes to these two because they're such a pair of twats!!

so I'll stay out of this one... :TU:

I was at the MEN with Terry D and Oli for the Brodie fight and the disrespect this guy shows pissed me off. I hope he comes back and someone beats him up.

No idea where that theory would come from - Guzman pretty much has it all: speed, skills, power & balls of steel.

Wasn't Guzman's power only highly rated at Super Bantam?

I think the iron chinned Barrios thought the same, but he had a look of pure shock on his face when Guzman hit him in the opening round.

Right now Guzman IS overrated. OK he was WBO champ at super bantam. then he bypassed feather, and beat two overweight guys Jauregei and Barrios. He showed major talent v Barrios but he took way too many rests. In his 1st defense he looked sloppy and amateurish vs a guy not in the top 10 super feathers.

Well overrated or underrated, it all depends who you speak to, but I think Guzman is the type of fighter who needs a major threat to pull out all the stops. Like his two title challenges for instance.

I'd back him to beat PacMan. Not sure Freddy Roach wants that fight though and I don't blame him.

I thought Chi clearly deserved the win in the first fight, it was close, but Brodie faded down the stretch, and although he had Chi grimacing from the body shots, Chi took an almighty amount of punishment, and Brodie ended up almost punching himself out. Brodie took a lot of punishment in return in the later rounds, and looked completely fekked by the end. That was an excellent fight, but I had Chi winning it clearly by a couple of rounds, Brodie was lucky to come away with the result he did.

I recall the commentary team at the time thought Chi a clear winner too.

If Brodie was fekked in the rematch, well, you have to give Chi the credit for making it so.

Chi has poor punch technique, but he is unorthodox and pretty much relentless, like Harrison he was huge at the weight, but appeared to have better stamina and workrate.

The Harison of 3-4 years ago would have had too much for St.Clair and Cook.

I think he would of edged Chi in a classic, but for the rest I think he struggles badly - Harrison was kinda exposed by Medina.

No way is Guzman overrated. He's in a different league to Harrison. Joan would have been moving up to 126 from 122 where, despite being weight-drained, he still did very well. He's tough as hell with far superior boxing skills to Scott and would have boxed his ears off for a shutout or late stoppage victory. I recently re-watched Harrison-Polo and Scott was incredibly fortunate to come out of that with a draw. The fact that most people feel that Harrison v Pac, Morales, Barrera or Marquez would have been mis-matches suggests he was not truly world-class, certainly not at the elite level. He was probably a good European level fighter and, in terms of recent British featherweights, way below prime Hamed and not quite as good as Paul Ingle. His main assets were his size and his durability, but his skills were limited. If he had made weight last December, IMO, with the effects of his recent lifestyle, he would have lost a decision to Cook. By the way, I think Cook's got a difficult night's work ahead of him with Luevano next month.

Medina is a very tricky guy, to one extent he showed the way to beat Hamed, winning many rounds untill Hamed big punch got him out of trouble.

His style was all wrong for Harrison really. The scot is a beast of a featherweight and has most success when he can outmuscle a guy standing in front of him.

With the exception of Gary St Clair, I think they all would have beaten Harrison comfortably.

Humberto Soto and Rocky Juarez would have also.

Humberto would have walloped him. If that fight was ever scheduled you can bet Harrison would have pulled out.
