A chance for some oneupmanship

Post by bennie »

British champ Danny Williams fights on Friday night against the German Ralf Packheiser and English champ Matt Skelton fights a night later against Ratko Draskovic. It's a chance for either fighter to outdo eachother by looking the better.

Danny needs to look good a bit more than Skelton. Skelton needs to win this fight unscathed so he can fight again ASAP (hopefully somone of Julius's class).

Danny needs to be looking at taking on the Fat man from Turkey again, its his only way he'll get out of this slump.

Anybody know his current EBU ranking??

There could be something in that, Williams V Skelton sound good to me! I think if Williams fought Sam again then the outcome would be the same again and well it seems to me that Skelton is fighting the better opposition on these upcoming bils out of the two men, i admit to have never heard of Packheiser  As the yanks would say, shame on my British ass :D

British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams marks time in a non-title eight rounder with Germany's Ralf Packheiser on the York Hall bill this Friday.
"I just want to keep busy," said Danny. "I'm training really hard, I had just a few days off after I knocked Michael Sprott out and I just want to keep sharp."
He has been ordered to defend his titles in a rematch with Reading's Sprott after the contentious ending to their September 27 fight in Reading where Sprott was knocked out in the fifth round while protesting to referee Terry O'Connor about low blows. He had also been floored late in the fourth after doing exactly the same thing. The Boxing Board, after an official complaint from the challenger's manager, Dean Powell, accepted that low blows did contribute to Sprott's defeat.
"We are ordering another fight between the two," confirmed Board General Secretary Simon Block. "We haven't sent out purse bids just yet because Mr Sprott is currently serving a 45 day suspension (because he was knocked out). Once both fighters are medically cleared we will be setting a date."
So Danny gets the chance to tick over and stay sharp against the 32-year-old Packhesier tonight, who enters the ring with a 12-3 (6) record, but has yet to box at all this year. He contested the vacant WBF heavyweight title Uzbekistan's Alexander Jakob in Munich last year but was unanimously outpointed (Jakob is based in Germany, which probably explains how he got the nod there), and bounced back with a six-round points win over compatriot Ergin Solmaz in July 2002, which remains his last outing. So the big Berliner (he stands 6' 5") will hardly be fight-hardened and has also been found wanting when he stepped up a level. As well as the Jakob defeat, he was beaten in eight rounds (technical decision) by European title challenger René Monse and his only other defeat came early in his career on points against the then unbeaten Turkish fighter Turhan Altunkaya. It looks like the step-up against Williams on Friday will also find him out. Danny can force a stoppage by the fifth round.

Williams wants to be doing an emphatic job on Ralf Packheiser who has lost every time he has stepped up in class and who only holds wins over perennial losers. Team Williams don't look to be taking any chances with this one!

As for Skelton, if he could stop Draskovic it would be an excellent result considering that Harrison, Sam and Saleta didn't manage to do it. It would probably be more beneficial to Matt's development though if he was taken the full route.

Danny pulled out sick on the day of the fight. There's a story on it at boxingcentral.com

Packheiser is extremely upset about the way this fight was cancelled, Williams credibility has taken a bashing here as far as i am concerned

Danny had flu like symptoms.
His team aren't too happy about web coverage of the story (probably referring to ESB).

I think a Re-match in December in Germany is reasonable. Shows Danny is confident of a win.

If he has any inclinations to fight at a decent level again then i should hope he is confident of a win!
