The relevance of this is what exactly? Many people saw the step up in weight as a dangerous gamble for Haye, that's why nobody complained before or after! Gunn was never going to be anything other than a blow out from the start.

You made a crap comparison.

To suggest that the promoters have no influence in fighters rankings and getting them title shots is a little disingenuous isn't it? I don't know anything about the Bobby Gunn situation in particular, but it's not unheard of for a figther who is about to get a title shot to suddenly shoot up the rankings in order to facilitate this.

Of course, the sanctioning bodies are complicit in this, but I think this just serves to illustrate my point, which is that the people who front the money, the promoters and TV networks, are the ones running the sport, the sanctioning bodies merely do the administration, and in reality, the sport could function if not without them, then with other bodies doing their function.

With regard to fighters, I do think that modern fighters don't have the same "Let's see whose got the biggest bollocks" mentality. Fighters get on a gravy boat, and paddle their way along the juicy meat-stock river of title defences whilst avoiding the eddies surrounding the dangerously rocky roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings.

Ok so I'm milking the analogy, but you get my drift.
I agree, but it is a promoters job to lobby an organisation to recognise and rate their fighters but Gunn's people did that, not Warren. They did a good if not irresponsible, in hindsight, job for their man. His Dad managed him by the way, I'd hate to meet the mother!

Ultimately, fighters and promoters are businessmen so the bodies must be stronger and sort the wheat from the chaff at ratings level and the Board at domestic level. Was Gary Reid really expected to beat Olusegun last week? The Commonwealth are probably the worst of the lot. If they know fighters capabilities they could and should say NO where appropriate.

Everyone in the sport should take a portion of the blame I know but ultimately, fighters should want to fight and not kid themselves and others.

Why did Hatton turn Mayweather down 2 years ago? The press seem to give more credit to Hatton than Calzaghe.

Gary Reid was far more capable of putting in a worthwhile challenge for the Commonwealth title, even against a top quality champion.

Gunn wasn't capable of putting in a worthwhile challenge for the WBO title, infact he shouldn't have been in the ring with Enzo period. The paying punter was ripped-off badly in respect of this contest.

Yes, but Reid was a solid challenger in that he wasn't like to get blasted into oblivion in 30 seconds, and didn't.

It was surely evident from Gunn's previous form, that he was going to get absolutely battered by Enzo, leaving SN with egg on their faces,

I find it hard to believe that SN, as experienced as they were, did not have any information to hand, outside of his ranking by the WBO.

I admit this wasn't intended to be a headline fight, but all the same, it does little to enhance Enzo's rep to be involved in fights like this, it was reminiscent of the likes of Michael Chilembe who Benn blasted out with the first shot he threw.

We all know it's part of the grand scheme to turn Enzo's career into another Calzaghe-type career. Long periods of meaningless "world" title defences with the odd decent fight thrown in after months/years of carrot dangling.

Some good points BC but...
Bobby Gunn was shite, we know that now, but he WAS ranked by the WBO and even higher by the WBC. Gurov and Bonin both crumbled in equally as quick a time and yet Haye suddenly becomes the saviour of British Boxing. At least Gunn protested and tried to come out fighting so that's one up on the aforementioned
Gurov was the European Champion at the time and Bonin was Hayes first fight at HW, Haye also wasn't defending a title when he fought Bonin. Where as Gunn had no history at all and it was being billed as World title fight. I know Gunns name is being over used, but he just represents the whole ethic of uncompetitive matches there are numerous other examples Manfredo being another prime example

Thats not a dig just at FW, because I agree with you when you say the fighters are as much to blame and they should be insisting on the top fights even if they're not getting paid what they think they're worth. Very few fighters have the fight anybody, anywhere, anytime attitude these days and their careers seem to be SOLELY based around ££££'s.

Prime example being JC chasing Jermaine Taylor round like a gun dog rather than looking for the fight that everybody was screaming for in Kessler, also when Ottke was about I don't recall JC kicking up a stink about them not getting it on, he was content with the Pudwills. He would have outboxed and outworked Ottke IMO and he should have been breaking his balls to make the fight when the 2 were head and shoulders above the rest of the division
Gunn was NOT the main event on this show and TV, I assume, paid nothing extra for it and the corwd at the venue would have come to see Calzaghe with or without Enzo on the card.
Was Manfredo much better than Gunn, not in my eyes. Virtually the whole card was an embarrassment and every boxing fan who knew a Mayweather from a Buckley was aware of this prior to the show.

To be honest the fragmented belts themselves don't annoy me its the constant mismatches they attract, if Calzaghe-Kessler-Froch-Mundine or Hatton-Castillo-PBF were contesting the WBU belts I'd be happy as Larry. Its just that the minor belts more so than the recognised belts allow a constant flow of these shite matches. When Hatton had his WBU belt he was in the hottest division in boxing, he defended his title umpteen times without being in a fight where he wasn't a 1/20 favourite.

I know every fight can't be a BIG fight, but the mismatch:competive fight ratio needs to be improved. Hopefully Khan can break the SN mould and insist on fighting the likes of Thaxton and not just look for people who are over the hill or insisting they move up from their natural weight. This is why Haye (and IMO Froch) are being hailed as the saviour of British Boxing, no other reason seperates Haye and Enzo other than Haye has taken regular risks through his 19 fight career, Enzo hasn't......til Braithwaite :TU:

Are you trying to say you only realised how bad Gunn was untill after the event??

Anyone could have told you that this would not have gone past a round.

It is amazing how obscure fighters creep into the rankings and then get a shot.

It does lead people to believe that these rankings are manipulated.
This is true! Frabk Warren said on record that he wanted Gunn to go AT LEAST 3 rds. So he clearly thought Gunn was better than he was. As Gunn didn't get through the 1st. Ha!
