Hatley v. Thurman
Hatley v. Thurman
This was a brutal bout. Hatley dropped Thurman at the end of the 2nd round. Early in the 3rd Hatley was going for the knockout and he got dropped. He then got up and the two boxers just threw bombs at each other. Thurman then got knocked down near the end of the 3rd round. The 4th round was tough with both boxers getting hit hard. I was amazed that it went to a decision.
Javier Molina would definitely get my vote for MOST SURPRISING BOXER.
He did do an excellent job and boxed very well. Was he the most outstanding boxer of the tournament? I am not so sure. He had several close bouts and was not dominant.
Did he surprise a lot of people, including many boxers? You bet.
Did he defeat some big names? Yes.
Were those guys dominant in the division like Rau'shee Warren and Gary Russell, Jr. are/were in theirs? NO.
Here is my analysis of all the champs and their chances at the MOB award:
106 - Luis Yanez - he didn't have any real close bouts. He looked outstanding. Strong consideration should have been given for him to win the award.
112 - Rau'shee Warren - he completely dominated the 2 opponents who were brave enough to step into the ring with him. His 3rd bout, he didn't get the chance to showcase his talents. Is it his fault that everyone expected him to win and that only 2 boxers were willing to compete against him? NO. He has set the bar high and didn't disappoint. I would say Rau'shee should have won the MOB of the tourney award.
119 - Ronny Rios - Boxed very well in his 2 contested bouts. If Gary Russell, Jr. would not have been injured and Rios would have won, then he would maybe have deserved the MOB award. Beating Russell would have been a huge accomplishment and definitely a BIG IF.
125 - Raynell Williams - Boxed very well and defeated an excellent opponent in the finals in Hylon Williams. Just as deserving as Javier Molina.
132 - Diego Magdaleno - He got the job done, but did not look outstanding doing it. Not my vote for MOB.
141 - Javier Molina - see above.
152 - Charles Hatley - he had a breakout performance at the U.S. Championships. His bout against Thurman was one of the most exciting of the tournament. He was pretty outstanding and other than his bout against Thurman, he completely dominated his opponents. He would have gotten my vote for MOB before Molina. Don't get me wrong, I thought Molina was a huge surpise and I was very impressed. I just did not think he was the MOST OUTSTANDING BOXER OF THE TOURNAMENT.
165 - Fernando Guerrero - He boxed very well and dominated several opponents. He had 2 excellent and close bouts against Nelson and Porter. He was as deserving as Molina if not more so.
178 - Christopher Downs - He clearly dominated his 3 opponents. He did not have a close bout. He defeated some tough opposition. Why wouldn't he get the award? Because people expected him to be in the finals. I think he would be more deserving than Molina.
201 - Deontay Wilder - Sloppy bout against Zimmerman in the finals cost him his chance of winning the MOST SURPRISING BOXER of the tournament award. That seems to be the criteria for winning the MOB award at some of the big tourneys.
201+ - Michael Hunter - His bout against Wilson was so close. Why shouldn't he win the MOB award? Because people were expecting for him to compete for the title. Nobody (except Javier, his coach, and possibly some friends and family) expected Molina to be in the finals.
Congratulations to Javier Molina on a very surprising tournament. I don't want to take anything away from his accomplishments in this tournament. He is one of the boxers to watch over the next year. He is young and could improve dramatically. He will probably mature physically too. If he does, he could have a decent chance at a medal next year.

Hatley won his first bout by RSC, Rd 1. He won his second bout by RSC, Rd 2. His bout vs Thurman had four knockdowns, including two in one round by each boxer, and was widely considered the bout of the tournament. He out-pointed M. Kerwick in the Championship, invoking the 20 point mercy rule one minute into the second round.
I don't see how Hatley doesn't get MOB.
Molina's bout vs. Dynamite was outstanding but not worth MOB, IMO.

He definitely should have been one of the front runners for the MOB award.docjock wrote:Hatley won his first bout by RSC, Rd 1. He won his second bout by RSC, Rd 2. Clarence - I definitely wouldn't go that far. I have seen bouts that are more action packed, but it was a very good bout. It probably would have been my pick for "best bout" of the tournament.ctill wrote:Best amateur fight i have ever seen....
So Clarence, what are your plans? Amateur still, going pro or what?

Molina
Molina was the MOW at the Eastern trials from what I saw, that is why I posted he was the class of the tournament. His US championship title didnt surprise me all that much (Though he did beat some really good fighters, his bracket was stacked against him). If he performs at the same level one more time he will earn the Olympic berth at the trials (Well chance for Olympic berth since it isnt guaranteed anymore).
I agree most surprising get MOW more often then not in not only Boxing events but all Wrestling events I have been involved in as of late. Not saying it is wrong but most overachieving may be more accurate then most outstanding

Re: Molina
What do you mean by a "chance" since it isn't guaranteed anymore? Did USAB change the Olympic selection process? If so, where is the info?holeymoley99 wrote:Molina was the MOW at the Eastern trials from what I saw, that is why I posted he was the class of the tournament. Sometimes they give it to the winner of the most "crowd pleasing" bout even though that boxer is clearly not the most outstanding boxer. The boxer usually gets hit a lot and wins a tough "last man standing" type of bout.holeymoley99 wrote:I agree most surprising get MOW more often then not in not only Boxing events but all Wrestling events I have been involved in as of late. Dennis
Dennis, doesnt the U.S. represenative still have to win in a qualifying tournament to actually make it to the Olympics ?
I know most of us remember the heartbreak of Mickey Bey and Roberto Benitez at the Tournament of the Americas in 2004.
If this format has changed I was aware of it.

The first qualifier will be the World Championships. If we are lucky enough to win there, it will really help. After that there will be two Americas qualifiers, dates and locations TBA. I hope one of them is in Tijuana again so I can go watch the finals. :) It will also be really nice if we can send a full team of 11. Keeping fingers crossed.

Re: Dennis
Unfortunately that format continues for the '08 Olympics. 9 boxers in '04. Maybe we can get 10 or 11 for '08.holeymoley99 wrote:Dennis, doesnt the U.S. represenative still have to win in a qualifying tournament to actually make it to the Olympics ?

Hopefully having the World Championships in the U.S. wiill help the U.S. boxers win.boxmel wrote:The first qualifier will be the World Championships.
