Although, it is unconfirmed is widely anticipated that Acelino Freitas will move up and challenge for honours at Lightweight.
This got me thinking about the statement announced by allegedly concerning the future of Michael Gomez. While I, and I'm sure many others thought Warren was refering to a possible WBU title fight. Look at the WBO rankings - Gavin Rees is positioned at two (ridiculous), with Alex Arthur at five.
It has just been announced that Casymayor and Corrales are going to fight each other again. While this fight should be for a vacant title, it is unlikely we'll see these two fine fighters messing around with sanctioning fees for a title not considered highly in the states. That fight is more likely to involve the WBA, either as an elimination or a vacant belt (depending on the situation - they seem to have two champions). After all, it is the more meaningful belt, and both fighters are ranked in the top 3 with the organisation.
Obviously, the latest rankings (which should include a massive rise for Gomez) hasn't been announced. I fully expect to see Gomez at least take Arthur's position in the top 5 with the WBO, if not higher.
So was Frank thinking Rees vs Gomez for the vacant (or interim) WBO belt????
It might happen?? If it does happen, then it will downgrade the WBO further.
WBO Super Feather title.

You can bet your life when Warren said he was going to offer Gomez a 'world' title fight next up, he wasn't referring to the WBC, WBA or the IBF. Yes, it will be a WBO shot. I can't see Kevin Lear, the WBU champ, jumping straight back in to a rematch with Gomez after so long out with a shoulder injury.
Of course it wasn't going to WBA, WBC, and IBF - but I admit I was thinking more IBO, WBU than the WBO (confused???).bennie wrote:You can bet your life when Warren said he was going to offer Gomez a 'world' title fight next up, he wasn't referring to the WBC, WBA or the IBF. Warren worded his statement well and didn't say how prestigious the belt would be. If the WBO is on his mind, I would have thought he would have given some hints, as compared to most of the 'world' champions in his stable, the WBO is a pretty prestigious championship. When it was announced I was thinking more on the lines of stripping Lear and maybe having Gomez vs B.U.M for the vacant WBU belt. Getting Rees and Gomez to fight for a vacant geniune(ish) world title will be quite a scoop, although again a World title fight being contested by two domestic level fighters is not good for the WBO.
However, I suppose he has to be doubly sure that Freitas is moving up before making a major announcement.
