Tyson vs Spinks anniversary.

Post by Rocky Balboa »

It's exactly 19 years ago that Tyson put in a marvelous performance against Spinks?

What your memories of the fight & the occasion, who did you want to win, how did you think the fight would pan-out etc?

Amzing to think the bout took place all those years ago. Spinks had never been knocked down in his pro career before the fight with Tyson. Spinks eanred good money for the bout, & I guess he was content with what he had achieved in boxing, so just retired afterwards.

Tyson, we know was a completely different story. Mike was not even 22 when he beat Spinks. Amazing to think a fighter at such a tender age was that good. Tyson was not only the best HW then, but the best fighter P4P in the world.

The world seemed to be Tyson's oyster back then. Great perofrmance by Tyson.

I'd say no performance... Spinks was never, ever going to win that fight. He held on to the title for as long as he could and retired straight after. He couldn't compete with the top heavies as evinced by him not facing another top 10 contender before Tyson. Tyson was the money and Spinks wasn't going to risk a huge pay day by fighting a live top contender.

Spinks beat Holmes because Larry was too old to follow up when he landed his right hand.

Tyson got the championship in this fight but I believed, and still do, that many of the top contenders would have KO'd Spinks with relative ease.

I'm actuallya huge fan of Spinks at 175.

Relative ease? . . .come on, you think Tony Tubbs would've taken out Spinks in one round? I don't look at it as a great performance as Spinks was clearly shaking in his boots, but I disagree the other HWs would have easily disposed of him as well, b/c none of them would have intimidated Spinks like Tyson did.

Intimidation was a big factor...and maybe many would have not have dealt with him so convincingly but even so... Spinks biggest asset at HW was his mobility. He lost that with his knee problems. Once that was gone it was over.

Spinks fought Tangsted and Cooney in defenses, and Cooney was a long time finished by then.

Any HW with a decent shot would have taken him out. James Smith, Frank Bruno, Bert Cooper... even old man Mike Weaver could have done the job...

IMO Tyson's great performances were against Berbick and Thomas. Spinks was just a job that had to be done.

I agree 100%. It was basically his crowning achievement on what Tyson was already doing to the division. Hell I'd rate Tyson's performance against an aging Larry Holmes over his win against Spinks. The only reason I would consider rating it his best fight because of the hype.

Yeah, I agree. And Spinks shouldn't have even had that status to begin, I thought Holmes clearly won the rematch. If Tyson wasn't "undisputed" champion upon unifying the three titles, he was when he beat Holmes.
