I think I'll make the pilgimage for this one if it happens, lets hope they can agree the $£$£$£$£$£It was reported by Steve Springer of the Los Angeles Times that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Ricky Hatton has a tentative date of November 10, with Las Vegas being the most logical site.
After days of back and forth verbal battles through the media, both fighters are ready to make the fight a reality. The biggest obstacle appears to be the amount of money each fighter will receive.
Hatton received $2.5 million for the four-round stoppage of Jose Luis Castillo last weekend in Las Vegas, while Mayweather made $20 million for his split decision win over Oscar De La Hoya on May 5. Mayweather is almost sure to demand a significant chunk of money for the fight. Art Pelullo, Hatton's promoter in America, told the paper that if both sides can agree on money - the fight will happen.
"If we can reach agreement on the money, there's no reason it can't happen," said Pelullo.
Mayweather, 30, "retired" after his May win over De La Hoya, and says that Hatton's taunts over the last few weeks have given him the motivation to return. It was noted in The Times that De La Hoya called Hatton after his recent win to congratulate him and made comments in the press with respect to a fight between him and Hatton filling up England's Wembley Stadium. The call from De La Hoya may have been the real reason why Mayweather jumped for the Hatton fight so quickly.
Leonard Ellerbe, advisor to Mayweather, disagrees.
"What prompted [negotiations with Hatton] is, over the last couple of weeks, Ricky Hatton has been saying a lot about Floyd Mayweather," said Ellerbe, "He's used Floyd's name to promote himself. He's calling Hatton's bluff, and now the whole world will see if this guy wants to fight and sign a contract now. ... We can definitely make it happen this year. The ball's in their court."

I still think there's a long way to in terms of the negotiations. Floyd, & maybe even Ricky to a certain extent, will drive a hard bargain. Both will hold out for the most financially lucrative deal they can get for themselves. I guess you can't blame them for doing so.
I think it'll be some time before anything is set in stone, contracts signed etc.

I wish every man and his dog did know Hatton, he would be fighting on ITV instead of Sky and Setanta - Fact is Amir Khan, still to prove something in pro boxing has a far more famous face than Ricky - Ricky and Mayweather are huge names to boxing fans but the public dont know them and thats because they are not seen on ITV or BBC.MojitoMan wrote:I love the little comment at the end of the piece 'he's using mayweather name to promote himself!!! floyds name and promotion dont really fit considering every piece written has to state he is p4p number 1 because nobody has a clue who he is as opposed to every man and his dog knowing hatton.

Warren has advised Ricky to push for the fight at Wembley.Rocky Balboa wrote:Chambers2 wrote:I think I'll make the pilgimage for this one if it happens, lets hope they can agree the $£$£$£$£$£It was reported by Steve Springer of the Los Angeles Times that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Ricky Hatton has a tentative date of November 10, with Las Vegas being the most logical site.

If Hatton beat Mayweather and Hamilton won the f1 title it would be hard to say who would be most deserving - Is it the public that votes or do a panel decide - If the latter you would surely have to have a joint winner in all fairness.stujones wrote:If Lewis Hamilton wins the F1 championship, then he is a shoe in.lvlarc wrote:Just a thought but if Hatton did beat Mayweather before the end of 2007 then I'd probably lose my bet on Lewis Hamilton to win BBC SPOTY. Although you can get Hatton at 40/1 at Corals...

Regarding Sports Personality of the year, even if Hatton beats Mayweather I doubt he'd win because less people see him than see Lewis Hamilton. If Hatton fought Mayweather on terrestial TV and won he'd be bigger than after he's been for pies and pints after winning his fights.
Incidentally, betfair take bets on the winner of the sports personality w/o Hamilton. Personally I reckon it's worth laying Hatton and waiting 3 months then backing him - his odds will lengthen as other sports events occur, especially if the Mayweather fight stalls. By laying then backing at longer odds you can't lose (and may even win whatever the outcome). Not that I recommend gambling.
Personally I reckon it's a straight contest between Frankie Dettori and Lewis Hamilton. Dettori's more of a mainstay on the BBC.

The other scenario that (although unlikely) could see Hamilton not winning the prize would be Andy Murray winning the US open.
Although I can't see it this year he does have the potential, has already shown he can beat anyone on his day and just needs to stay clear of injury and hold it together for a entire 2 week grand slam.
Easier said than done but stranger things have happened!

Have to disagree with this granted every man and his dog is a bit of stretch but a hell of a lot more people have heard of hatton than Mayweather.wildwaylon wrote:I wish every man and his dog did know Hatton, he would be fighting on ITV instead of Sky and Setanta - Fact is Amir Khan, still to prove something in pro boxing has a far more famous face than Ricky - Ricky and Mayweather are huge names to boxing fans but the public dont know them and thats because they are not seen on ITV or BBC.MojitoMan wrote:I love the little comment at the end of the piece 'he's using mayweather name to promote himself!!! floyds name and promotion dont really fit considering every piece written has to state he is p4p number 1 because nobody has a clue who he is as opposed to every man and his dog knowing hatton.

Yes could be that team Hatton are looking to bring FW on board as an advisor ( and maybe promoter as well ) to help negotiate their way though the shark infested waters towards a Mayweather fight in the UK.
HBO would prefer it in the UK, as that's were the huge crowd and atmosphere would be.
Floyd can't sell tickets.
But Frank dropping the lawsuite because Hatton has agreed to sit down and meet, doesn't actually mean much really. They could easily say thanks but no thanks, and FW would be back to square one.
Just shows how desparate FW is, grasping at straws to get his big ticket seller back on board: he hasn't go much else really. JC fights once a year.

You are right mate, Hatton is better known certainly by name, but imagine Hatton and Khan doing some special thing on the market place of any British city centre - The average Joe would say "I know who that is, its Amir Khan, but whos the other guy" and when told who he is, the reply would be "oh thats Ricky Hatton is it" - Thats what I was trying to say - Ricky needs to get back with FW and fight on ITV as the star act - If that happens ITV will get their viewers and every man and his dog will know who Ricky is.MojitoMan wrote:Have to disagree with this granted every man and his dog is a bit of stretch but a hell of a lot more people have heard of hatton than Mayweather.wildwaylon wrote:I wish every man and his dog did know Hatton, he would be fighting on ITV instead of Sky and Setanta - Fact is Amir Khan, still to prove something in pro boxing has a far more famous face than Ricky - Ricky and Mayweather are huge names to boxing fans but the public dont know them and thats because they are not seen on ITV or BBC.MojitoMan wrote:I love the little comment at the end of the piece 'he's using mayweather name to promote himself!!! floyds name and promotion dont really fit considering every piece written has to state he is p4p number 1 because nobody has a clue who he is as opposed to every man and his dog knowing hatton.
It did take quite a long time for Mayweather to find his audience. Despite his great abilities, his relation with his promoter Top Rank was strained, he had a great start at super feather but then numerous temperamental performances. After proving himself THE MAN at 130 (beating #2 Corrales) and 135 (beating #1 Castillo twice) you'd have to say he wasn't an attraction. Didn't he want one of those giant billboards that Britney Spears had and Arum said no...?
Then there was a sort of 3 years in the wilderness where he really didn't fight anyone that good, before getting his act together and basically - beating TWO VERY POPULAR GUYS ON PPV.
Hatton, meanwhile, has that whole Pond to cross. His first 2 fights in America left a poor impression. As such, the Castillo KO can only take him so far - because like I hinted at on the Current Scene before the fight, it had to have limited US interest on the heels of 2 uninspiring wins. He's already a huge attraction in Manchester obviously and he is making a mark in America now because of his personality and exciting KO...In other words he's doing it off his own steam, not off another fighter's back.

I think this could be a big PPV,because there is the prospect of a fight breaking out during the bout, Hatton's style is appealing, and apparently even the Collazo bout was well received, because it was a bit of a ding dong battle.
Obviously Oscar brought the majority of the buys to the fight with Floyd, but I think that the clash of styles and personalities can be marketed to sell this fight. 500K +, maybe as high as 700k buys stateside. Depends how well they build it. They need to build if up for several months.
Bear in mind, both men are still unbeaten and ranked in the top 10 P4P.

For Hatton to be big, he needs 1 or 2 more showcases where he looks good vs a world class opponent. Get the public familiar with him and have HBO blatantly plugging him.
I don't believe there even IS an HBO date this year. Look how Calzaghe-Kessler has been put on the backburner because HBO have put up a load of shite already (Mayorga-Vargas, Marquez-Barrios).

According to Boxingtalk, Mayweather has given up the 154 WBC title now, but is retaining his 147 belt, so would suggest he's looking at another fight at welter. Cotto-Margarito/Williams winner should be fighting later in the year, and I can't see Mayweather fighting Mosley, so maybe he does intend to fight Ricky?!
