I lean towards Witter being the better ring general and that making the difference. He needs to be at his best against Harris though

It would be a travesty if this isn't on US TV when its number 2 and 3 at 140 squaring off. I wonder how many other number 2 and 3s in the world squaring off wouldn't get shown
Shaw sounded very hopeful, didn't he - when asked, he replies "I have no idea!"

If there is any kind of profile for this fight, and if it's a good fight, it would be nice to see the winner earn a crack at Hatton. On the prinicple that Hatton is #1 at the weight and those 2 are probably #2 and #3, if nothing else.
I wonder how many times in history we will have a universally acknowledged 1 and 2 in any weight class
Hatton is universally recognised. As soon as you get an alphabet title you have to fight some silly mandatory (in Hatton's case M'Baye and Rabah). He beat Tszyu, so that makes him the man. If he fights Mayweather, you can't blame him for not taking on Witter. Witter has to have a convncing win and - this is the bitter truth - has to create a demand, a market for himself or he will only get easy vountaries and a mandatory every couple of years.

YEs but if he doesn't fight Mayweather/Mosley/Cotto and he doesn't fight Witter hes taking the easy route and not being the dominant champ.

You can't just beat the linear champ and never fight the top contender and proclaim yourself as great

The Corely fight was a borefest where neither fighter did much action wise. It was a good win for Witter but it was a Corely at the end of his career, he went on to get TKOed by a 17-3 fighter 8 months later. Corely is kind of like the Wayne McCullogh of the divison, in that when he steps up he usually gives a good effort but ultimately fails against good opposition.

Corley was coming off sending Cotto/Mayweather to queer street and it was a shut out without Witter ever getting tagged. No it wasn't thrill a miniute but 2 counterpunching southpaws will rarely be exciting. The Harris fight should have far more action. No Corley isn't a great fighter but he is a challenge and a potential banna skin with his sneaky left hook

Yes Max what people are unaware about Witter is the fact he never had fights over 6 rounds so the first few times it happened against Ndou/Lynes/Kotelnik

He has looked more calculated and better paced recently despite not being as devastating
He went 12 with Judah.....

What balls, Corley never sent Mayweather to queer street, he hit him with a clean shot, Mayweather went to the ropes, stumbling backwards, and then beat the shit out of Corley for the remainder of the fight.

Cotto got caught with a temple shot, lost his legs, and then started bashing Corley up again once he felt back to normal.

Corley is awkward, that's about it.

Yes I negated to mention that as it was another 1 off, he didn't have the durable fringe contender types coming up to ease into the 12rounders

Do many fighters look spectacular when they first fight 12rounders? All fighters improve with experience over the distance. Witter does have something of a stamina problem but is also about pacing he clearly punched himself out against Ndou and Kotelnik and seemed to have controlled it better against Corley/Morua since then, despite not looking as devastating.

Yes but hes still a potential bannana skin, I thought PBF was rocked hard but only saw it once. Cotto did come back nicely but the PR hometown ref stopped the fight early because he was concerned about Cotto. We don't know how that fight would have turned out.

Lets not forget Corley took Judah to an SD - I haven't seen the fight but thats pretty impressive

I can't forgive anyone losing to Carlos Maussa.

But Witter looks troubled making the final step.

No question he's been far from clinical or dominant against Kotelink, Lynes etc.

Perhaps the risk Harris brings will get him in better physical and mental shape.

Harris can drill though.

witter should beat harris.

harris has never really impressed me much.

i think witter is sharper to the punch and his awkward style bums harris out.

Exactly, neither of them have set the world on fire and I can see it being a stinker, with Harris nicking a close decision.

I rate Witter but not as highly as most on here

Your point about the significance of "sending someone to queer street" is flawed.. Fighters get staggered, wobbled, troubled all the time - its how they deal with it that counts.. Does Bonecrusher Smith get credit for one punch in the last round vs Tyson even though he stunk the place out for the other 11??

I was merely arguing against a previous point. Someone said that Harris wouldn't stop Witter because Judah couldn't and the truth is, Witter fought to survive in that fight, not to win. Judah was never in a position to stop Witter.

This will be more of a fight which will open up more opportunities for a stoppage.

Harris was massively out of sorts that night though Dave.

He was over trained in the extreme. Despite having a big frame for 10st he came in WAy under the limit - he was a mess physically and it showed in the fight.

Judge Harris on that fight at your peril. I am expecting the hard punching dangerman everyone thought he was before that debacle to turn up against Witter.

Its the night before UFC 75 unfortunately and I already have tickets for that show. If its at Ally Pally I might make a wkend of it down in the big smoke, otherwise I am just gonna have to watch it on TV,,

In fairness Ian, whilst the Judah fight is excusable, and in fact, in some respects it was a good, if negative performance, which showed Judah up, it is subsequent performances which are the problem.

In recent times, Witter has looked sloppy, and this could either be demotivation, or a loss of timing and reflexes, or simply that at a higher level, Witter doesn't look good.

Unfortunately there has never been a complete and compelling performance from Witter at the higher eschelons of the sport. The Corley fight was very low in workrate and punches landed, the N'dou fight was a fight of two halves, a very good first six, followed by a very poor and worrying last six, against Kotelnik, Witter barely squeaked home with a win in a fight where he appeared totally ill at ease with Kotelniks tight, but not unorthodox style, and against Lynes, Witter seemed to chronically underperform. Against Morua, Witter achieved a stoppage, without any palpable excitement.

These fights all add up to a sense that Witter is a fighter in decline, or lacking in some mental component or other which turns a good fighter into a great one, and a recognised talent into a star.

Harris has had one bad night, one really bad night, Witter has had a lot of so-so ones.

This is Witter's last chance I fear. Either he dominates this fight, or edges Harris out in a thriller, or his aspirations of being big box-office really are over.

If you put any fighter under the microscope there will be more off nights. Harris had 2 off nights against Ukral (some had him losing the first but I didn't score it). Ukral is probably around Koteniks level and similar. Witter looked much better against Ndou than Harris looked against Lazcanno.

And when Witter was losing to Judah, Harris was losing to Olivera and drawing with Robinson

they both looked uneasy against solid, unexceptional pressure.
