If Ricky were to beat Floyd....

Post by Rocky Balboa »

Where would you rank the win in comparison with all the other great British victories over the years i.e. Honeyghan vs Curry, Buchanan vs Laguna, Stracey vs Napoles, McGuigan vs Pedroza, Conteh vs Ahumada, Benn vs McCllelan etc?

In my view, I would rank a Hatton win as the highest.

If Hatton beat Floyd, a lot of ppl would say Floyd was too small against that size/style or that he was too old, not mobile enough...

If he won a close decision a lot of ppl would cry robbery.

As a single result better than Turpin-Robinson?

I always felt an underrated, overlooked one was pale Scotsman Ken Buchanan going to Puerto Rico in the blazing sun (god knows what the temperature was) and outboxing fellow Hall of Famer Ismael Laguna over 15 bloody hard rounds to win the lightweight title. Everything was against Ken that night but he did it vs a superb fighter under the WORST of conditions.

Hmm interesting question.

I am inclined to say yes. I am not saying Mayweather is better than SRR, but he is the pre-eminent fighter of his day, and has superlative skills, and he is still in his prime.

SRR was a little way removed from his prime, and proved beatable at middleweight, whereas he was virtually unassailable at Welter.

The circumstances surrounding the fight must also be taken into account I feel.

It's a toughie, but I think it just eclipses Turpin's achievement.

Not sure though, that this would be the very best performance by a British fighter. There are other examples which are not so highly trumpted up I'm sure.

Size won't be a factor at all, he's taller than Hatton and has a longer reach. Not to mention the fact that he beat DLH who is huge compared to Hatton.

And I doubt people will cry about age or mobility when it comes to Mayweather. It's not like he's Mosley who's 36.

I could see people crying robbery if it went the distance but anything other than that, I think people will be forced to give Hatton respect.

But when you think of a fight like Minter-Antuofermo 1, when the US media tried to rewrite history...

On the size matter, Floyd had his best years at super feather.

On a par IMO... my generation would say best ever, the older gen would probably pip for turpin. IMO Hattons odds would be shorter than Turpins would have been, but as James points out Mayweather is probably at his prime at the moment, where as SRR wasnt. The rematch also proved SRR was by far the superior fighter... would PBF rematch Hatton if Ricky beat him?

It would definitely up there with the greatest results of all time where British fighters are concerned. It would also put Hatton straight into the HoF.

Personally i think he's booked his place in the HOF already.
If Hatton did beat Mayweather it would rank as a great victory, but the wins for Honeyghan, Stracey would still be bigger surprises , as they were thought to have no chance.

Its nice to hear Randolph Turpin getting a mention, that was some years ago - Ken Buchanan was a great fighter also - Like Ricky is today they were very special - There were so many great fighters its hard to pick any one as the most outstanding of all time - Certainly if Ricky were to beat Mayweather you would have to say he was the best LW of all time even though the fight would be at welter he will be best remembered as a LW.

It depends on the manner of the victory really. If he goes out and stops Mayweath in the early rounds it'll probably go down as the greatest. But if he wins something like a SD or a close UD it would just go down as one of the great.

Hatton vs Mayweather would be a poor match in the same way the DLH fight was. OK, it would gross big dollars but as a spectacle it will stink the house out. I believe Hatton would edge it and PBF would cry foul and everyone will wonder if it was value for money.
It must be Hatton vs Cotto next, that will put Hatton in every hall of fame and cement his legacy if that was needed.

They are 20 and 30 years ago respectivelt, but let's not forget Honeygan Vs Curry or Stracey Vs Napoles

revisionism tells you that one was weight drained and the other old, but at the time........

I was lucky enough to have seats at the former and listened to the latter on the radio from Mexico as an 11 year old and then watched it the next day

great fights both and both worth of top five placings in UK fighter history

Agree, but alot will depend on the weight. For example, Floyd in Vegas with the WBC Light Middle belt on the line then I might be tempted to swap Hatton and Turpin.

I cannot see Hatton winning though.

In hindsight I shouldn't be making comments like this, because I ain't a great historian of the sport. I should have inserted 'in modern times' into my statement

It would be impressive, but wouldn't be as monumental as when Audley won the world title by kayo against Sonny Liston.

Well, the Dutch version.

And then there Curry-Honeyghan and Laing-Duran

Then theres the old timers like middleweight Fitzsimmons beating Corbett/Maher for the HW title

Actually heres a question Patterson was mentioned as teh first to regain the HW title BUT Fitz fight tiehr Maher was billed as HW title, he lost on DQ and then beat Corbett for the title

We also forget that Holyfield was in the top10 P4P when Lennox beat 'drew' with him

I think we pretty much take it for granted that Lewis is better than Holyfield. Beat him twice (really) and had to press to get the fight for a good 2 years. Holyfield was considering fighting everyone, from Botha in South Africa to Akinwande - he never wanted to fight Lewis.

If Hatton beat Mayweather, it wouldn't be the biggest shock. 1) everyone would be wiser afterward, 2) he has stoppages over Tszyu and Castillo, 3) Mayweather was being outworked by Oscar until the 2nd half of the fight and we knew Oscar can't maintain pressure for too long (even when in STICK AND MOVE mode he fades after 8!)...Hatton may be much fitter than that, 4) Hatton brings fast paced, educated pressure...most fighters can only manage 1 or the other.

Of course, Floyd could just be too hard to hit. In this way his lack of real size helps him as he is a minuscle target and hides his chin well.
