I did box when I was very young, but I just want to make sure that the next person who tries it on, gets hurt badly enough, quickly enough, to deter them.

Chances are if wouldn't have made much difference the other night, but It's a good reason to get fit anyway.
my preffered method of self defence - stick one on the biggest mouthiest one, his mates are only watching to see if hes alright with you before they pile in.... if you spark him, they will fold like the fake-burberry-teenage scum they are...

best way to win fights is NOT TO CARE what happens to you or them... no ditractions from what you are about to do the little mug... go ask samurai Bri about HAGAKURE
Great advice.
Hagakure is a fascinating read.
Miyamato Musashis Book of Five Rings has it right also.
I actually have a book by Hagakure, a friend got it for me as a present years ago. It is still on my bookshelf. I must get around to reading it someday.

As far as as self defence goes my atitude has always been.

(1) Be aware at all times what and who is around you, if you can avoid a situation then do so.
(2) If that fails run to the hills.
(3) If that fails, strike fast, strike hard and fight dirty. Kick them in the nuts, stick your fingers so deep into their eye sockets you can tickle the roof of their mouth, punch them in the throat, grab their hands and break their fingers clean off etc etc etc Then run like hell.
(4) If that fails curl up in a ball and pray that God is smiling on you that day.

Having said all that sometimes you are just unlucky.

keep safe jimmy lad, i know its a bit far from brixton but the guy who said about the peacock is bang on.

i tried the go-for-the-biggest idea once when faced by 3 in a bermondsey
street (strangely enough they had nicked my bike and i was foolishly in pursuit.) the other two managed to find a large iron bar whilst we were rucking...i got away with some upper body damage.
got the bike back though!!!!

Yep, I did contemplate giving chase and knocking the pudendum off my bike, but didn't fancy the aftermath of that too much, given that I'd just been doing an impression of a woodlouse rolling about in a ball.

Looks like Fitzroy Lodge is good for me, I work on Lambeth Palace Road, so I could get there one night a week after work.

Books such as Hagakure and The Book of five rings are not books teaching the sword technique of the Samurai.
They tell of the mind set involved.
100percent commitment to winning the battle.
This mind set is essential to winning a situation as you found yourself in.
All the technique in the world is ineffective in a life and death situation without it.
Although the actual Samurai are long gone, I think that the philosophy is still very applicable.

I'm aware of Samurai philosophy, and don't think it's that applicable, because their whole philosophy was based around fighting and death. If you win you win, if you lose, you die, and the worst crime was to flee the battle. Samurai basically were not allowed to fail dishonour or death was the outcome.

At the end of the day, I Do care about getting smashed to bits, and I'm not prepared to go guts or glory in the street over nothing.

The trouble with most martial art training, is that in the kind of situation was in, where I instinctively lashed out, it has to be kept simple, which is why boxing is effective, the moves are simple, easy to remember, compact and instinctive.

Yes boxing is outstanding in self defense.
Judo and the Japanese style JuJutsu that I teach are excellent versus more than one and weapons.
Anyway like I posted before , the Budokwai is in London.
And yes martial arts need to be uncomplicated in self defense.

Yeah, I'll see what days I can make and give you a shout KO. It's going to be embarrassing, I'm so unfit, I'm not really overweight, I think it's years of smoking which have screwed me, but I've given up now.

Fitzroy's rates are fekking reasonable as wel.

Hard lines James, sorry to hear about that mate.

But wait its only happenened once in 36years? That means it won't happen again until your 72. If you want to see that age you need to take care of your liver and pack the stella in before you worry about a fight in 36 years time

Seriously though being able to protect yourself is vital BUT how do you know the people your fighting don't carry

Lets say James had boxed for 20years before floored 2 of the kids, and the final 1 gets shit scared pulls out a knife and kills our beloved poster. A good kicking is far more preferable

Also what if you reacted with a huge right hand ko'd the little bastard before he hit the floor and he hits his head on the pavement dieing? Bottom line street fighting is dangerous

James

I am sorry to hear this.

It happened to me once when I was a student and afterwards, more for self esteem than anything else, I took a course of "street" self defence courses that were all the rage in the 80's

The only time I have ever had to use it was about six months later in Islington where there was no way I was going to avoid some people looking for trouble in Camden passage.

The advice was, if you are in a situation where you cannot avoid some physical confrontation, then pick one and kick them as hard as you can in the knee cap. Then scarper as quickly as you can to where there is street lighting and traffic. Stand in the middle of the road if you have to get attention.

I did just that, the fat fornicate went down like a sack of spuds and I legged it round on to Upper St chased by the other two. We ran right into the arms of a couple of policemen just as one of them shouted " we're going to kick your f**king head in you P*ki C*unt" which was a bit of a jackpot for me as it became "racially motivated assault" which was a much worse crime.

Anyway, they picked up the other guy about a hour or so later and I was able to submit a written statement without name and address. Not sure of the end result, probably a severe ticking off and a warning, but I felt better.

The funniest thing in the whole event was, when I was at the station and told the police I was a student.

He said " what are you studying?"

I said "theology"

He paused a while and then said "that's rocks isn't it?"

Priceless

See if there are any of these street self defence courses around. They help staying outn of the situations as much as what to do when you are caught in one

And, stay safe

Fitzroy Lodge cater for keep fitters etc as well as amateur boxers. You just need to train at certain times.

The website is not working at the moment but i remember when i enquired about joining that training after work was not an option. Those times were only for the amateurs i think the fitness stuff was the mornings & early afternoons.

James, don't caught up in the "what ifs" and the "if onlys". Technically speaking you didn't get mugged. Had it not been for you wanting to help a mate, you wouldn't have got mugged anyway. You just jumped in to help a mate, you were out numbered and they took your bike.

In a weird way you instigated your own mugging, but that's not a slur on you cos it was courageous of you to help a friend, shame he didn't hang around to help you.

You were unfortunate, not inadequate. You could randomly walk up to three nasty looking blokes any time, any day, and give them some lip and get yourself bashed up. Only in your case the reason you approached these guys was to help a friend, so don't be hard on yourself.

Sorry to hear about that fella :(

Very similar thing happened to me many many years ago..

Coming out of a local night-club with two mates, when a guy fronted my one friend...my mate got involved and next thing a big group piled into him...I jumped in to help and then got twatted about from all angles... :-?

My one friend and I had a lengthy wait at the A&E dept to get stitched up...my other friend did not even get his hair messed up...he too had done as your friend had done and disapeared at the soonest oppurtunity..

All these years later I can see he probably did the sensible thing...it was a big gang and an extra one would have made no difference anyway...but at the time :x

And going to a gym will give you a little more self confidence...but 3 guys who want to fight will always beat the single guy.
The only time 1guy beats 3 is if the 3 guys don`t want to fight.

You may hurt a bit for a little while, but if you too had done a runner I`d imagine you`d be hurting alot worse for alot longer.

Bless you my son for the beloved poster comment. In truth, I didn't really get much of a kicking, they were complete pussies who didn't even have the confidence with 3-1 odds to give me a real pasting. Scary as t was, they did fekk all damage.

Sorry to hear this James, I've always considered muggers to be amongst the lowest of the low. All in all though you were probably lucky that they didnt have knives, or at least didnt use them. As for self defence, while boxing is great and would certainly get you fit I think the best thing to take up in the way of defending yourself against such thugs is future is something like Karate or Judo... in either of these diciplines you would learn great methods of disabling and possibly disarming any potiential attackers. For instance when you were down on the ground there are certain things you can do to turn the tables. Ofcourse a lot of these techniques take time to pick up but you can really learn them at any age. Karate is the more formidable of the two but Judo is the easiest to pick up. The truth is that unless you are really something special with your fists when your up against a gang of thugs they arent going to do you much good... its the far more gentlemanly way of fighting it out but these days its oldfashioned... being able to throw your attacker to the ground and then stamp on his head is a far more useful way of dealing with things!...

Silk, Im a judo instructor, and its not easy at all to pick up.
Its a very tough martial art to learn.
The poundings are incredible.
I dont see karate as more formidable, but of course Im biased.
A clean hard throw against a person on concrete who doesnt know how to take a proper fall is absolute devastation.
But your points are excellent.
