You get my drift though. Just because let's say 5-10,000 Manc die-hards chose to follow Ricky to Vegas for a weekend of debauchery, doesn't equate to filling Wembley Stadium.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no bloody roof on Wembley, so how the fekk are they going to fight in the middle of November, they'd need umbrellas and long johns.
the reason Floyd-Oscar was so big was that Floyd makes the Oscar package better, i.e. Floyd's pedigree and maybe the best p4p in the world...Winning that fight will give him some clout, but it could also ruin things - can anyone afford Floyd with his new expectations?verballistic wrote:PPV has undoubtedly contributed to taking boxing out of the mainstream...but now that the sport is firmly in the midst of the PPV era, it is a valid measure of a fighter's national (and sometimes international) following!! while PPV sales are not the best measure for a mainstream sport---it is the best measuring stick boxing has now!! the fact that cotto only drew 225,000 for his bout with judah does not mean miguel does not have a following all over the map---it just means his following is not too deep in any region outside of PR and NYC!!Autobarn wrote:Verbal, PPV isn't the be all and end all. His market was NYC, which is where both fighters were known. Arum has admitted that he and King got greedy in the 90s and that the combination of PPV and casinos did a lot to take boxing outside of the mainstream. Only one guy in the whole of boxing is a PPV star and that's de la Hoya. That would suggest something is quite wrong with the way things are.
PPV was a product of the Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield era. it's understandable why ppl would be tempted for the exciting heavyweight stuff.
I mean, ultimately, what makes you think that ppl are foaming at the mouth to see Floyd strut his hardly exciting stuff? And when they've bought it, are they actually pleased? No way.
Floyd is an outstanding fighter but not the untouchable, perfect, unbeatable megastar. Let's not forget he only beat de la Hoya by SD and his weight limitations were really on evidence over the first 6 rds...
oscar is clearly THE star of PPV, but there is a reason that his fight with mayweather did get nearly 1 million more PPV households than his next biggest PPV with trinidad!!
that reason is floyd mayweather, but not for the reason most people normally look for:
1. it is not because he is an exciting fighter...he clearly is not!!
2. it is not because they are pleased by the action (or lack thereof) when they bought any of his PPVs (with the exception of the gatti fight)...
3. it is not because he is an unbeatable megastar, because he is not!!
4. it is not even because he is the best P4P fighter in the sport today in the minds of most!! although that helped sell the oscar-floyd fight as "best P4P vs most popular"...
5. it is not because he is an undefeated fighter headed for the HOF!! tho that clearly doesnt hurt...
6. it is not because the one of the best-conditioned and most dedicated, disciplined athletes you will find in any sport!! again, that doesnt hurt and helps some, but not a SIGNIFICANT factor...
IT IS BECAUSE FLOYD MAYWEATHER HAS NOW BECOME THE FIGHTER EVERYONE LOVES TO HATE!!the reason so many folks tuned in and made this bout even surpass the 2 holyfield tyson epics, was because MOST PEOPLE WANT TO SEE HIM GET BEAT!! give oscar and GBP credit for coming up with such an excellent marketing strategy, but not many in the fight game (at least not among the TOP fighters) CAN PLAY THE VILLAIN WITH SUCH GUSTO AS PBF CAN!!!
i imagine you brits and other euros didnt have to sink money into PPV over there (i'm assuming they have it slightly delayed on non-PPV networks), but all the americans and mexicans i know (both here at boxrec and personally), bought the fight because they wanted floyd to get his ARROGANT butt knocked OUT!!![]()
as long as floyd continues to exploit this stroke of marketing genius by playing the villain in future fights...i believe MANY will pop down their $50 (or whatever portion of it they pay to watch at friend's house as i do) to watch him face ANYONE with a legit chance of beating him!!that includes hatton, mosley, cotto or oscar2---most people hate him so much that they wont even give him credit for boosting sales by playing the villain!! but THEY STILL PLUNK DOWN THEIR MONEY in hopes that they will get their biggest boxing wish!! and alot of brits will crowd some s0ccer arena in UK who arent necessarily even huge boxing or hatton fans!! they just want to be there live when this dastardly american villain finally gets his come-uppance from one of their own!!
![]()
the only guy i can remember who exploited this strategy so successfully was none other than naseem hamed---he may have been popular in the UK (tho i know he also has MANY brit detractors, even here at boxrec)...but virtually 90% of american fans who watched him, did so to see him get his cocky butt smoked!! that's why he got a ridiculous $48 million contract for 6 measly fights with HBO (not even PPVs), when EVEN OSCAR WASNT GETTING THAT KIND OF MONEY!!but at least oscar was "taking notes" enough to have GBP eventually pull this gem of a strategy out of their bag of promotional tricks!!
you probably did not notice the supreme irony of megastar rapper 50 cent, but the refrain for the new rap that he debuted in MGM arena on 5/5/07 was "LAUGHIN' ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK" which is what floyd did that night and could in the future as well, since he doesnt really have to try very hard to be the villain---he's a natural!!so dont be TOO surprised if floyd-hatton, floyd-cotto or floyd-mosley surpass the 500,000 PPV buys that most are predicting, as long as PBF keeps exploiting that ingenious marketing scheme!!
floyd mayweather jr doesnt care if you, i or anyone else hates him---just as long as you buy his fights on PPV or show up in droves at a british stadium (as long as he gets a cut of live gate)!!![]()
You have a point on the everyone loves to hate him. Ppl would tune in to see good guy Hatton against bad guy Floyd. But his attitude clashes with his in-ring style, it wouldn't take a lot for his reputation to take a hit (passive performance against Hatton?) and like I say, he may not even step in the ring again for less than what he got for Oscar.

Wembley has a Millenium Stadium style retractable roof, I believe. Or perhaps somebody should correct me for being wrong?jamesmcdonnell wrote:Smarmy get.DavidPayne wrote:I just checked with Casio, and they make it 60,000.

And they'd sell out Wembley for Hatton - Mayweather. It'd be the biggest fight since....oooohhh... Bruno - Lewis? Bruno - Witherspoon? Benn - Eubank?

details on the roof
http://www.wembleystadium.com/pressbox/ ... igures.htm
Wembley was designed by architects HOK Sport and Foster and Partners with engineers Mott MacDonald, built by Multiplex and funded by Sport England, WNSL (Wembley National Stadium Limited), the Football Association, the Department for Culture Media and Sport and the London Development Agency. It is the most expensive stadium ever built[1] at a cost of £798 million (roughly US$1.57 Billion)[1] and has the largest roof-covered seating capacity in the world. The design of the stadium is an all-seated 90,000 capacity bowl stadium (unless it is athletics or concerts) protected from the elements by a sliding roof. The stadium's signature feature is a circular section lattice arch of 7 m (23 ft) internal diameter with a 315 m (1,033 ft) span, erected some 22° off true, and rising to 140 m (459 ft) tall. It supports all the weight of the north roof and 60% of the weight of the retractable roof on the southern side.[2] The archway is the world's longest unsupported roof structure.[3]
