Gover bare fist fighter 1890's

Post by gaby »

I am trying to find out more about Jack Gover for a friend interested in her genealogy (Jack was her g grandfather). There are 2 entries on the site under his career record 1895 & 1896 against Jewey Cooke. We also have a newspaper cutting refering to fights against Arthur Callan and the last championship held under London Prize Ring staged on the lawn of the estate of millionaire Max le Bawdy. Unfortunately the 'cutting' is truely that with the newspaper's date missing and much of the wording!

Can anyone suggest (or perhaps provide) where I can find more information about Jack Gover?

If you know the paper from which your cutting is from try and look it up in the archives of a good library. If you know the area where jack Gover lived look up the archives of the local papers of the time.
Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the suggestion and we have been trying to do that for some time (find a copy of the original). Jack Gover was born in Edmonton.

We were trying to get a better idea of his fighting career, if anyone could suggest where to find this sort of information and / or if you have further information about the 2 fights you have listed in your database we would really appreciate it - as you can tell I know nothing about boxing and or bare fist fighting!!
Thanks again
Gaby
