Superstars
Superstars
Tonight BBC1, 8:00pm
The Series features Danny Williams, Hatton and Wayne McCollough, but I don't know if any of them are in tonights program.
(I've been looking forward to this show for a while)
Then afterwards, switch over to SkySports for Ringside, for a Brodie-Chi preview.

This takes me back to the 1970's and the US version of Superstars.
Joe Frazier was in it and we all now what a fierce competitor Joe is, he refused to quit and no mountain was high enough.
Well Joe was doing OK until they got to the swimming heat.
Joe's ready with his trunks on, dives in, the rest of the field zoom down the pool and Frazier almost drowns and has to be dragged out by the Lifeguard.
After plenty of coughing and spluttering, he was asked why he competed when he knew he couldnt swim. Frazier said, "man, I dont quit at nothing".
Crazy, but true.

Not sure about that sliding squat thrust! (that's not proper form as far as I am concerned!).Twinkle Toes wrote:I don't think Wayne woud have got a top two place tbh. His feet did look sore, and it would have affected his 800m run, but not the mountain biking.
and, yes bollocks, A question of sport is stll going
I addition to being injury free, I think wayne would have done better if there were different events (But you can say that about all the atheletes.). He might have wiped the floor with the rest over a longer run.
Danny williams is a great indoor rower... but I don't fancy his chances in a canoe.
I missed last weeks program, were there any boxers on it? I read in Boxing News that Hatton apparently admitted to "Not being in the best shape" for the show which is a bit of a shame. Didn't really want to see the Hitman, in what is a rare terrestrial TV appearance, showing off a double chin and beer belly.
He must be looking after himself a bit better now though - according to Billy Graham full training for the Tackie fight starts today but Ricky looked pretty lean on saturday night when interviewed on Born To Win. By the way well done to Sheldon Jopling, what a cracking little competitor he really did boxing proud. He only missed winning the whole competition by a whisker.

Kilburn, no boxers last week. That drug taking (well vicks sniffing) Skier bloke (Baxter) and Jamie Baulch qualified confortably. I'm a little annoyed how 400 metre athletes are allowed to do the 800 metres. My best mate runs for Wales at 800 metres, and yes all 400 metre athletes run the 800 in training, and would be competitive in elite competition. Indeed, their training regimes are quite similar (well over in Wales they are).
Didn't see much of that Born to win, although from what I could gather it seem like a version of 'uncelebrity' superstars - which again makes it hard to work out who is the better athlete at their event.
Its the final week this week and Ricky Hatton is involved, by the sounds of it he doesn't do to well - which is a shame. No Danny Williams this time.
I predict Baxter to win it overall, with Baulch (if he's going to run the 800) and Steve Claridge to run him close.

Man, I love this programme.
Kilburn, you missed a good episode. Snooker Athlete Matthew Hunter was taking part. He came 3rd in the 100 metre sprint. Crazy.
I thought Danny williams was involved
I'm not expecting great things from Hatton. He's already stated that he was terribly overweight during the long lay-off after the eye-surgery. This would be exactly when Superstars was filmed. I'm afraid he's gonna look a bit like a white jabba the hutt.
I think his balooning wight was what prompted him to employ a dietician, who told him knock off eating meat pies etc.
The Skier is going to win it for sure.
I think they should change the 800m to a 5000m. Seperate the men from the boys.

Yes its a good show, Johnny Vaughan is a damn sight better in this than in the celebrity boxing show and Suzi Perry is an added bonus - I think her job title is 'Flirt with the athletes'.Priff wrote:Man, I love this programme.

A White Jabba the Hutt
Good call about the 800 metres, its really not fair.
Incidently, whats this Johnny Vaughan radio show they plug at the end. It sounds like its a boxing show - any ideas??
Don't forget guys, it Ricky Hatton tonight (but he's gonna look more like Ricky Gervais, mark my words).stujones wrote:Yes, not only that but former class decathelite, used to running the 1500 metres!!
Perhaps they'll omit him this time.
stujones: They only pull an athlete out of 1 event.
The decathlete would cruise both the 100m and 800m. Seing as 100m is a decathlon event, I expect to see him in the 800.
In case anyone missed it.
Hatton came last. Scored 2 points (the lowest score in Superstars history).
To put it into perspective, the snooker player Matthew Hunter was on last week and score about 8 points.
They did a bit on a piece on Haton, showed him training, interviews, bag-work etc. They didn't do it for anyone else. I think that shows he's a houshold name.

It was a bit of poor show, Steve Collins actually looked good next to him. It was interesting to see how much thinner he looked in the training film as opposed to the actual competition.
The squadthrusts was the only thing he was only half good at.
I wanted the old guy (Brian Hooper) to qualify, he was really taking the competition seriously though.

Maybe if you're a Manchester household. I can tell you now down south casual sports fans still don't know who Hatton is and may never know.Priff wrote:They did a bit on a piece on Haton, showed him training, interviews, bag-work etc. They didn't do it for anyone else. Seems to me if boxing is ever going to be well represented on Superstars they need to invite the ones who are in some kind of training all year round, some athlete types like the Ingle fighters. From what I saw of Hatton he didn't look any fitter than a mile-a-day city jogger. I'm not criticising him for that as we all know what shape he's in come fight night but I just think they could chosen an alternative who looks the part and is at least going to be competitive in the show.

I believe he is taking part in sort sort of TV fitness show to be aired soon?
He's been on Question Of Sport too remember. (although sports fans don't watch that show anymore, only middle-age women who think McCoist is adourableKilburn wrote:Maybe if you're a Manchester household. And there is quite good coverage of him on the BBC website.
I think the BBC are to be commended for their coverage of fighters not on their network.
He may not be houshold, but is second to Lewis only (current boxers only) for public visibility. IMO. Anyone agree?
