Greedy Millennium

Post by Captain Hook »

BOXING promoter allegedly accused Millennium Stadium chiefs of greed in a row over Welsh boxing hero Joe Calzaghe’s bout against Mikkel Kessler.

BOXING promoter allegedly accused Millennium Stadium chiefs of greed in a row over Welsh boxing hero Joe Calzaghe’s bout against Mikkel Kessler.

The fight will probably take place on November 3 but the venue is in doubt as Warren claimed the Millennium Stadium was too expensive.

Warren said: “Kessler has agreed to come over here, so we’re looking to promote the fight in the UK.

“At the moment we’re negotiating with the Millennium Stadium, but they’re asking for a bit more money than we want to pay.

“Of course we don’t expect the Millennium to do it for nothing, but they make a lot of money from the concessions, the bar and so forth.

“What they want is like asking a pop band playing there for a percentage of their record sales.

“It’s greed, that’s what it is. It’s not a cheap venue to hire, it’s very expensive – it comes to hundreds of thousands of pounds to put these events on.”

Calzaghe, 35, attracted a European indoor record crowd of 35,000 for his 20th defence of the WBO super middleweight title against Peter Manfredo Jr at the Millennium Stadium in April.

Kessler, 28, like Calzaghe unbeaten in his professional career, holds the WBA and WBC versions of the super middleweight title and is a dangerous opponent.

Welsh Rugby Union group chief executive Roger Lewis said Warren was seeking to pay less than the total paid for the Manfredo fight.

“The starting point must be the deal that we had last time, not less,” he said. “We can’t go below that. It’s a fair deal for the fans, it’s a fair deal for Wales.”

Warren said he would prefer to stage the fight in Wales in front of Newbridge man Calzaghe’s home crowd.

He said he was prepared to take the fight elsewhere, although he does admit he needs an enclosed venue because of likely weather conditions in November.

Looks like Warren is looking for a reason not to stage the fight but someone else to blame for it. Nothing new there then.

Warren, do your negotaiting in private, like a professional. I am not interested in how expensive verious venues are - thats for you as a promoter to deal with.

Just deliver the fight or can it.

Warren hasnt done a lot with his exclusive MEN deal, has he?

How can FW expect to pay less for this fight than for the Manfredo one?? Ridiculous... :box:

More attendance, more commission, more bar takings, maybe?

Perhaps following the resounding success of the last promotion the stadium feel they somewhat undervalued their role in it’s success, and therefore their fee.

They are at liberty to renegotiate their site fee for future events; that is business. Nothing unusual there.

What is unusual, however, is for one party to go running to the press when they can’t negotiate a deal successfully.

Frank has relied on that NOTW column for too long. He no longer appears able to close a deal without trying to use the press to gain extra leverage.

Maybe from FW's point of view.... Not sure it's that simple tho mate - the MS will incur more costs as a result of more attendance/more punters too....

Asking for a slice of the action is a simple businees principle that FW of all people should understand....

I appreciate that the article isnt from the NOTW, I was just trying to get across the point that Warren likes to do business/voice his opinion & grievances in the papers..

And It's a reason for you guys to also be negative about the fight not happening because you think Warren doesn't want to do big fights.

Hasn't Warren written his last column for the new of the world? I can't remember where i read it -may have been Boxing News- but i thought the NOTW sports editor was going to the sun and Warren was expected to follow suit or something along those lines.

Warren's hoping to sell 60,000 tickets and he's complaining because hiring the venue is going to cost him?!

Somebody said he should just get on with negotiating and stop telling the press every bloody move he makes....

They're right.

His moves are all in the wrong direction and he's desperate for acceptance, for the public to like him and for ITV to know he's trying....

Whereas we all know he's a cheapskate who won't pay them what it's worth and give us the matches we want to see

that said, one side of the stadium is crumbling...already :(
