No question I think that Duran was a great fighter ..the only thing that I could see that would disqualify him from being considered one of the greatest of the greats would be the fact that he quit in a couple of fights...

One thing that IS overrated is Durans bad guy image....

True, Duran could be a rough customer in the ring and could act belligerant towards opponents and their partisans...
But I've never heard of him getting into trouble away from the ring..

So those analogies to Ted Bundy and Hitler are pretty ridiculous..

Anyone who can compare Roberto Duran to Ted Bundy and Hitler needs their heads examined!..... Duran has never committed any atrocities.... never raped anyone or bitten any of his opponents ears off..... I wonder if some of you anti-Duran guys have mixed him up with someone else.
As for those who see Duran losing to buchanan and Barkely I have to question your ability to understand what you see in a boxing match. Duran dominated Buchanan.... Ken fought bravely, but could not contain Duran.... no way was Ken winning the fight. Durans Fight with Barkely was close but Duran won clearly... he outfoxed Barkely... and out slugged Barkely.... the knock-down in the 12th sealed the win.
Everyone is entitled to his opinion but I do feel that some people do not give Duran his due. Incidentially Duran has been robbed on points at least three times in my opinion.... against Robbie Sims, Pazienza (first fight) and Comatcho (first fight)..... and Leonard ran like a theif in their 3rd fight.

Duran FORCED Leonard to fight his fight due to his sheer agression......the rematch was a joke.......he was weight drained and just didn't have the energy

Duran wasn't just weight drained in his second bout with Leonard, he was sick.... through the heavy use of dieretics etc to lose weight. One of the reasons that Leonard insisted on a quick rematch was that he knew that Duran had spent 3 months after the first fight partying and had blown up to over 200 pounds. Pound for pound I have no hesitation in rating Duran the better fighter than Leonard.

"he was weight drained"

"he was sick, through the heavy use of diuretics"

"spent 3 months partying after the first fight and had blown up to over 200 pounds"

Three of the excuses/alibis for why Duran lost in the 2nd Leonard fight...

The question is...

Whose fault were all those things? Why (as an experienced pro & defending champion) would you let yourself get in that situation?
