Scott Gammar slips up.

Pembroke's rising heavyweight prospect Scott Gammar suffered his first 'black mark' on his proffesional record with a draw against Lithunia's Mendauga Kulikauskas in a non-televised undercard bout on Saturday's Maesteg bill.

Kulikauskas is a fimilar figure on these shores having faught in the United Kingdom three times previously. However, in each of these occasions he was been beaten by fellow prospects John McDermmott, Danny Watts and Albert Sosnowski. His record before this bout is a dissapointing 3 - 4 with two KO's. He has also been stopped twice by Watts and Sosnowski.

I know Gammar well, and this will be considered a major setback for him. He is recieving a fair amount of local press coverage and I think his camp were very aware of the hole in the market for a decent young heavyweight prospect. However, I have alwaysed maintained (and I don't mean to blow my own trumpet) that he needs more variety if he to make any impact in the game and I suggest a change of scenery and maybe a trip to America to toughen him up.

Very dissapointing news all the same, what did TT think.

No, there were high hopes for the Welsh prospect. Looks like they'll have to match him very carefully from now on.

I've read that Gammer has struggled to get decent sparring in Wales, this needs to be changed, and fast, young fighters need quality sparring to learn their craft, so they make the mistakes in the gym and not in the fight itself.

Gammar has potential but right now I'd favour Matt Skelton over him.

To true Joe, there are only two decent Welsh heavyweights ..... and one is an Amateur. Both used to win the WABA's with ease (virtual walkovers). He cannot afford to base himself in Wales, he'll never improve he's beating up all his sparring partners.

Skelton's has more natural 'flair' about him, Gammar's a bit to robotic (I have nver seen throw a four punch combination). Skelton should win, unless Gammar changes his attitude.

yes i agree gammer will be well matched with the other SN fighters, i was at the newport bill and thought he done well in august

dont know how he got a draw last time out, he must of slipped up real bad,

TT was at the bill, so maybe he'll explain later. However, given how referees tend give the prospect the benefit of the doubt - I know its harsh for me to say that, but the evidence is there. Its probably safe to say that Gammar was possibly lucky to escape with the draw.

Chris, you were at the Newport bill - are you a Welsh lad?? Where are you from.

my mate lives in pontypool and his dad lives in cardiff city, so i travell there for a wales card and its somewhere to stay.

my first one was calzaghe - mitchell, could of gone in the past bills but never had the money,

i am going to the next calzaghe fight,

Gammer has signed a three fight deal with Barry Hearn.

His draw was the first of the three.... can't help feeling the SN boys would have matched him a little kinder.....

To be honest Real Deal, I don't think Scott ever had a permanent deal with SN, no long term contract anyway. Cause he has boxed for a Welsh promotor (who's name escapes me) and who's fights are shown on ITV (Wales).

I've seen Scott on ITV, BBC and Sky.

Gammer's camp wanted him to stay busy so they took the three fight deal.

As for Skelton, well he could be in for a huge 2004.

Julius Francis, Michael Sprott and John McDermott all await...

I have seen Scott Gammer fight and would say that he is behind almost EVERY HW in the Sports Network stable both in terms of innate talent and future potential and I'm welsh!!

Gammer - Skelton - Skelton
Gammer - McDermott - McDermott
Gammer - Greenburg - Greenburg.

I met Scott years ago and if you'd told me he was going to be a HW contender I'd have laughed - he was too small.

With all of that bulk he now has - he is too lumbering and unwieldy - I see little past Welsh champ for him.

Well thats probably going to be Kevin Evans' downfall aswell - he's even smaller.

I think Gammar has the potential to beat McDermmot, but I do fancy Greenberg, Skelton and Harrison over him.

Bennie, funny thing is - he also has (alongside his brother) worked as a bouncer - some role model!

Unfortunately, Kevin Evans is no saint when it comes to mixing alcohol with fists. I think he has cooled down a bit recently, but both families (cause both have even bigger brothers) have got "reputations" so to speak.

Most of us are rather small, unfortunately.

Of course the classic story has to be the 10 stone 6 of Colin Jones flatterning the 16 stone of International Rugby player Richard Moriaty !! When Swansea player Moriaty was playing away from home the chants of "Colin Jones, Colin Jones Colin Jones" (to the song "Here we go") could be heard even years after the event.

And more recently the nutter that was Neil Swain - if I remember rightly he gave Brodie one hell of a fight...and was apparently even livelier outside it when he was roaming in the valleys.
