Not going to count Froch and Haye as I don't consider them prospects any more - they are champions.

John Fewkes, Paul Appleby, Jamie McDonnell, Nick Smedley is improving loads - there will be more.

I know alot of people dont like to use Amateur Success as a way to review a prospects chances as a Pro. But as we are mentioning some of Englands past best Amateurs, there amateur success is nothing to shout about and if they were to reach the same level as pros. English titles and Commonwealth titles are all we are going to get.

Amateur World Championships only 3 months away, i cant see any of them getting medals unless they get byes!

Most likely lose some of them to pros as they wont qualify for the Olympics and then what? Back to square one!

But World Boxing has some great prospects, they just dont include any English

Yep.

Seriously, Woodhall has three of the brightest prospects in the light-welterweight division in Costello, Cox and Murphy.

What about Scott Belshaw? I've seem him a couple of times and he looks to have something about him. I know he was involved in a car smash, but is he not considered a decent prospect?

what do we care who the prospects are anyway. on these hypercritical boards, we criticise any prospect for the comp, write them off after any mistakes, and when they become champions come up with lists of whom they're ducking and generally construe that they can't beat any of the 'stronger' champions. and of/when they do beat top notch peers, we get all revisionist and decide that said dethroned champ suddenly got old/weight drained/too cocky.

it's getting very tedious on here. it's open season on everyone - fighters, promoters, commentators, ring announcers. ok modern boxing can be hard to swallow at first, but you either get over it and find some good, or just bugger off and do something else.

I was really impressed with John Fewkes on Friday. He schooled Tontchev for 6 out of 8 rounds and nearly stopped the ex-euro champ at the end of the fifth.

Your right, but Cox had to adopt his all-action style of his junior and early senior career to a more points-friendly style to make sure he was successful on the level he went on to perform at - international.

If he had fought the way he had done against Ali Wyatt, when he flattened him in a classic in a Western Area ABA final in early 2005, in the Commonwealth’s last year then he would have been peppered with punches and lost against the fighters whose styles are moulded for the computers.

He had to stop planting his feet as much and go and use that computer scoring technique. He did, to his credit, adapt to that style well and went on to win the Commonwealth Games and the ABA's. He was unlucky in his first final when he was pipped in a war with undefeated pro Michael Grant.

Opinion was divided at the time in all quarters. I thought Cox just nicked it.

Since he has been at the Team Ringside gym with Richie and Len Woodhall he has sharpened up on his southpaw skills, to make them more effective in the pro ranks, and begun to plant his feet again. The kid he fought on Saturday, Jason Rowland-trained Johnny Greaves, was a tough, tough lad and did well to last the distance after being decked.

I think we will see Cox cut some tough lads in half with body-shots in a few fights time.

I take your point and understand what you are getting at - Its true some do over criticise and find faults regardless which is not only unfair but often leads to keyboard arguements - Thats why we have to be more fair minded and post constructive comments rather than abusive stuff, like calling people tossers etc - What we do here should be just our opinion which we all have a right to and as long we stick to doing that I think the forum does a good job.

Appleby does look... infact, so does Smedley and Fewekes - but concerned at their lack of pop. Lovely skills on the pair of them, but ultimately I think they need more power.

Still think Khan, he might learn from this. Not sure if Andy Lee counts, but he is doing this right and doing it well.

Bhatia looks good, but possibly falls into the same problems as Smedley and Fewekes.

Mo Nasir looks like he has a good chance of getting to the Olympics, doesnt he?

Im sure he'll do well as a pro too, although I can see him stuggling to attain the fights in the UK.

Fewkes wouldn't get down any lower than lightweight I don't think.

Here's the thing about Fewkes and stoppages. He has made a mess of many of his opponents through his power. By all accounts he doesn't struggle for power in training, its just not transferring as it should on fight night.

He almost stopped Tontchev but ran out of time at the end of the fifth. Another 30 seconds and he would have gone.

Another previous South Yorkshire prospect had a record after fifteen fights with only 3 stoppage victories and he had even drawn 2. That was Junior Witter who went on to stop 14 in a row after the Judah loss (as a last minute replacement).

Maybe Fewkes will find the last piece of the jigsaw, he is on a very steep learning curve and improving with each fight.

lookin at his body tells you he is too small to be a lightwelter and if he had power hed stop more but he has impressed me with his will to fight anyone

Belshaw (seen only one fight) is come-forward, aggressive, throws well to the body if a little wide in the hook, and has no understanding of the word JAB....

Like I say, only seen one fight tho

John Murray by a mile.

Saw him on the Mayweather DLH undercard producing a very controlled performance and also seen him a couple of times on SKY and he looks almost ready for a domestic title shot now.

Think he won the writers award for young prospect of the year recently, but might be wrong.

did anyone camcorder it?

I like Murray's attitude. I believe his lesser showings are him being a bit finnicky. When he fights away he seems to perform that extra level, i.e. on the Lacy-Reid undercard.

Well schooled fighter. I think he's going back to Canada for a fight on Showtime's ShoBox series.
