Jamie Moore to get honorary degree

Post by Stegsie »

Salford-born boxing champion Jamie Moore is to receive an honorary degree from the University of Salford on Tuesday 17 July 2007.

The 28-year-old British title holder, who lives in Salford, will be made a Master of Science for his contribution to sport and his unstinting work with young people in the community.

Jamie became a professional light-middleweight boxer in 1999 and is now ranked 10th in the World Boxing Council’s world rankings. As the British light-middleweight champion who has won the famous Lonsdale Belt, he has advanced the ‘Manchester style’ of boxing together with other top fighters like Ricky Hatton.

From his working class roots, Jamie has dedicated his career to helping young people stay off the streets and out of trouble. As a youngster, finding it difficult to purchase affordable, good quality boxing equipment, he later researched and launched his range of kits aimed at those parents and children who would have been put off the sport by expensive equipment.

Jamie said: “I’m very proud to receive this award from Salford University. It’s a long time since I was in education and I never expected to get a degree. It’s fantastic to think my work with school kids is being recognised. I just want to make a positive difference to young people and encourage them to reach their full potential.”

Paul Wilson, Associate Dean of Enterprise in the University’s School of Health Care Professions, said: “We’re delighted to present this degree to Jamie. It is not only his great achievements in sport for which he deserves recognition, but for his valuable charity work with the community and local schools.

“As well as his top boxing skills, Jamie’s talents lie in helping to raise the aspirations of young people from all types of backgrounds. That philosophy is at the heart of this University and Jamie couldn’t be a better example for our staff and students.”

Other honorary graduands at the University of Salford this year are sociologist Professor Eileen Fairhurst and Professor Peter Edwards, a University of Salford graduate and chemist.

Brilliant. I think you should show an example of your work by dropping the Dean with a rib tickler after you've been given the certificate.

Well done mate :TU:

What an outrage

Our youngsters have to away for 3 years, take copious amount of alcohol and drugs whist having sex with as many people as they can, to get such an honour.

I have always said it takes one to know one - Ex drug addicts and alcoholics can and do help those with the same problems, for example - Helping kids in these difficult times to find a better way of living their lives is highly commendable - Jamie Moore is an outstanding boxer and is a perfect example of getting there through sheer effort - Good luck and well done for yet another acheivement Jamie.

Hopefully the European champ, but you never know, might end up fighting Facey again!! I must be the most unlucky fighter in the country. I should have moved on from domestic level 2 years ago but Ive been kept hanging around. Might get a world title shot by the time I'm 37!!

Piccirillo is a good fighter mate, I know you are too but he has been at world level (Mayorga, 1-1 with Spinks) and is very experienced. I thought he thoroughly outclassed your old adversary Jones.

What would your opinion be of fighting Bradley Pryce for the C'wealth 154, or Sylvester for the European 160 belt?

I'm not bashing you mate, just interested to know

I wish it was Piccarillo!! I know I'd beat him. I was gonna fight Price when he was my mandatory 2 months ago but he pulled out. I'd fight for Euro middle title if the chance came up, but then I'd fight anyone at middle or light middle, as long as the £ was right.

Piccirillo is alright no doubt, he was IBF champion - but should never have been... Spinks won the first one. But he has geninually beaten some quality opperators.

Baysangurov is a smart technician but still learning his trade and is a bit rough around the edges. I see no reason why Jamie couldn't beat him. The link contains a round by round of Baysangurov V Bayram from the Klitschko-Brewster II undercard :D

Congratulations, good to see hard working fighters getting recognition doesn't happen enough these days with the sport being less mainstream than it was.

He was ahead but he wasn't outclassing Jones.

Spinks Is great but Mayorga sucks.

Im sure the brit title will be dropped should a euro title shot transpire in Sept or early Oct. I think thats the date the board have set, the fight hasnt been made. Also, didnt facey turn down the opportunity not so long back?
