Thaxton: I’d KO Khan

Image

British lightweight champion Jon Thaxton has re-iterated his long-standing challenge to Amir Khan to meet him in what would now be an old-school showdown for two traditional titles following Khan’s win over Willie Limond on Saturday night.

The Olympic Silver Medallist captured the Commonwealth Crown when former holder Limond failed to emerge for the ninth round at the O2 Arena in Docklands, but only after climbing off the canvas and surviving some torrid moments of his own in the sixth.

“I want Khan to be a man,” began Hennessy Sports promoted Thaxton. “He’s said a lot about me in the press. He’s disrespected me, so now it’s time for him to step up the plate. I’ve got the British Title, he’s got the Commonwealth Title, so let’s do things the old fashioned way and put them both on the line.

“If he says yes, the fight can happen. My promoter Mick Hennessy wants to make the big fights, so we aren’t going to let politics get in the way of things. I’m not going to hide behind my promoter; we will happily go and box on one of their shows.”

Thaxton, who made the first defence of his British title with an impressive stoppage of English champion Scott Lawton in March, has always been sure that he would be too much for Khan. The weekend provided further evidence.

“For me, there have always been a few question marks about Khan’s ability to take a punch,” he added. “He got as close as you can get to being knocked out by Craig Watson in the amateurs. Now I’m convinced that he’s got no chin.

“He was floored heavily by someone I consider a light puncher; someone who gave up his status as mandatory contender to my British Title. He’s getting knocked out the first big punch I land. I would get the job done properly; I wouldn’t let him off the hook. I think he was one punch away from being stopped.

“No disrespect to Limmond, but I believe Khan went for the easy touch by fighting for the Commonwealth. Well, he’s got a bit to prove now and I am giving him the opportunity to fight for the British Title against the number one lightweight in Britain.

“After the withdrawal of Graham Earl, the Board delayed their decision to install my next mandatory contender until after Khan’s fight at the weekend. Now he’s won, hopefully he will be installed next month and then we can really see what he’s made of.”

The 32-year-old Thaxton got his head down and earned the right to be called Britain’s best the hard way. Whether they clash or not, the Norwich hero hopes that Khan will now set about his business in a less vocal fashion.

“He has disrespected a few fighters,” he added. “He’s been talking like he’s the best in Britain, saying how there’s a few of us he’d like to shut up and that we need to fight him before it’s too late.

“He’s also talked about being ready for a world title by the time he’s 21. I don’t believe he’s even good enough to win a British Title, even if I was out of the picture. I don’t think he’d get past someone like Lee Meager. I think Meager could stop him.

“I think it would be better if Khan remembered his level. I think someone like John Murray is a good example of a young fighter. He’s a great little boxer having a proper apprenticeship. He will get the rewards.

“Khan has received a lot of money and attention. Given where he is at, I personally think it’s a bit unjustified and a bit of a circus. I am the man to end it.”

I hope this bout does happen, but it's highly unlikely in my view. After Limond nearly sent the Khan circus out the window, a man not known for punching power, Khan will not be allowed to box someone like Thaxton. Not yet anyway!

Thanxton is correct when he says Khan needs to remember the level he's boxing at. Jon has really laid down the guanlet to Khan, even saying he would box on a a show put together by Warren.

Thaxton has proved himself, Khan has not. Not yet anyway. Amir should stop being disrespectful to other boxers & just concentrate on himself. If he doesn't do this, people will turn against him.

i think khan will be made mandatory for the british title after the board's meeting but warren wont let it happen i think it was a bad move from warren to get khan the commonwealth because now khan has to fight good fighters because tv will demand it i can see khan giving up the title

Why on earth would anyone put Khan in with Thaxton after he nearly got knocked out by Limond. Thaxton is a sharp counterpuncher and is an absolute beast of a man at 135. He looks like a welterweight come fight night. Unless Khan could cut him up early, it would a brutal dismantling.

The only way this happens is if Thaxton retires, and Khan calls him out for a payday.

If they are, I'd be amazed. Earl may have his limitations, but he can bang a lot harder than Limond.

Thing is, after that, everyone is going to be going for it against Khan, whilst they know he can hurt them, they also know he can be hurt.

Well if Graham Earl is the next fight for Khan I am very surprised - Earl still has plenty of stamina, has the skills and loads of experiance and can punch a lot harder than Limond - I think Earl would take the fight because it would be a massive payday for him and would help to get his own career back on track - A win over Khan which I dont doubt would happen would do wonders for him - Ludicrous decision IMO if Earl is named - Even more ludicrous would be a fight with Jon Thaxton - Thaxton would knock him cold - Meager and Murray would be huge risks also - To be honest the domestic scene is a minefield for Khan, never mind challenging for a world title - If these guys cant do it with success and Earl couldnt I cant see Khan getting there - Can you see Khan beating Katsidis? - I think Khan is having to think very differently to the way he was, before fighting Willie Limond and he needs to - Limond was no stepping stone he was a nightmare that Khan wont ever forget.

what we need to consider is when Khan physically matures things could go very well for him. He's still a kid. I'm not sold on him, but considering many of us felt he should stick around for the next Olympics...

Chavez Jr used to look rubbish now 2 years later he's kept busy and found a pretty good pro style...Andre Ward was dropped by someone who can't bang yet ppl are starting to jump on his bandwagon again.

Still, I have Munyai, Ajose and Romanov quite far ahead of the prospect pack because they've actually won proper fights.

Having learned a few harsh things about the pro game at the weekend, I'd expect Khan to give Graham Earl a beating if they met. Earl looks a shadow of the boxer who gave the performance of his career against Romanov.

Thaxton is hardly unbeatable. If you've got speed, power, and the ability to put a relentless, sustained attack together then you have a very realistic chance of taking him out. That is PROVEN.

I can't believe Khan is being written off from just about every angle.

Khan hasn't had as many fights as Murray but has stepped up faster than John has.

Limond an easy touch yet Knocked down Khan and bruised his face?

Otherwise I agree with the rest of the article.

Thaxton rips Khan a new one if they fight now.

No way Frank lets this fight happen for a while after Saturdays performance. Khan should be keeping his gob shut about Thaxton...unless he's going to fight him

Why Shitman? You can't put muscles on chins.... :box:

Khan has all the skills to succeed. Hopefully he'll learn from the Limmond scare. I actually think he did better when he stepped up the pace and let his hands go. The more conservative Khan got caught more often.

Anyway, Thaxton vs Earl isn't happening. Expect an unknown African to be next for Amir, or someone back from the wilderness like Craig Docherty or Martin Watson. Scott Lawton would be ideal, too.

One thing that can't be denied about Thaxton, when he's hurt he doesn't exactly defend himself well. If Khan found a punch to hurt him, it's not inconceivable that he could finish the fight.

whats with the insult ben crapface? it would have been better had amir stayed am for longer because of the position he is in today; surrounded by hungry brits anxious to get through the piss poor defence that would have been tightened by campaigning in the unpaid ranks for at least 18months after the olympics. the result we now see is a guy having to learn these things, as you so cleverly advocate, in the public eye.

I disagree. Khan would beat Earl he is shot. Khan would get hammered by Thaxton if they were to meet now but lets just say if Thaxton was in a couple of very hard fights then met Khan things would be different.

The key issue here is how really will Khan's confidence be now he got decked by a non puncher, can anyone remember what Audley was like as soon as someone hit him. Will Khan go into his shell and how will his confidence be?

The insult was tonge in cheek towards the Hitman - he's an old forum pal of mine. Don't get your knickers in a twist, Harry.

How would Khan's defence have improved by him staying in the amatuers exactly? It's a completely different sport to the pro game. Arguably, Khan got caught more often when he boxed in a more composed fashion on Saturday. When he went back to his old 100mph amateur style he took Limmond out.

Khan's failings would appear to be that he possesses questionable punch resistance. This would always have been highlighted however long he decided to stay in the unpaid ranks.

Ben Carey you mention questionable punch resistance of Khan? I think you are being far too kind. Khan was knocked all over the place by someone who cannot break an egg with a baseball bat you only have to look at his record to see that. In addition the matchmaking without of cause the use of hindsight was made because it was the opinion that Limmond was indeed a non puncher.

Khan now has to defend his title, I wonder how quickly he will give it up if the Commonwealth Board or commission sanction a fight against a reasonable puncher.

in my view, and i apologise for the silly remark :TU: in my view the defensive skills learnt as an amateur will stand you in good stead as a pro. you're right about the chin aspect of it but amir allows too many opportunities for his foe to land punches on his weak chin.
a longer spell at am would have seen him patch this up to a degree.
i also agree with you that he was more effective coming forward and landing his own bombs - although limonds efforts to nail khan after the knockdown tired willie out sufficiently to allow khan to break him up rather easier than had limond been fresh.
amir is not good on the backfoot, although this could come in time. at the moment he looks clumsy and confused backing off, very uncomfortable and poorly balanced. in fact i do not know why he adopted this method against limond.

I think that if Khan had a disposition towards 'turtling' like Audley Harrison, he would have been beaten by Limond.

Khan won that fight because he was prepared to dig in and battle his way to victory. He showed courage and a will to win even though his chin was exposed as being unreliable.

Realisticly, I'm not convinced he's quite ready for the likes of Thaxton or even Earl yet but in terms of raw boxing ability, I think he eclipses both.

There were obviously some negatives to come out of Khans fight with Limond, but there were also alot of positives- his stamina looked fine for the 12 round distance IMO, he showed great heart in returning from the brink and his power seems to be developing very nicely as he matures.

I think Oliver Harrison summed up Khans performance when he told him he was "trying to hard", he was lunging in looking for the KO and he was leaving himself wide open when doing so. After Khan was knocked down he got back to his boxing, he picked his shots alot better and was getting tagged alot less.

Khan needs to tighten up his defence and not take so many chances early on, his handspeed is phenomenal and he should be using to greater effect by boxing at distance rather than getting involved in a tear-up. Khan managed to learn a fantastic lesson on Saturday without ultimately getting beat, in time we may look back on the Limond fight as we (I) do with Hayes fight with Carl Thompson, providing Khan has learnt some valuable lessons (as I'm sure he has as Oliver Harrison will no doubt be ramming them down his throat)
