Cuevas vs. Duran

Post by Frank Dracman »

Prime for Prime, who wins? Keep in mind, this is WW champion Pipino, not the old, fat guy that Roberto rolled over.

I give Duran the edge, as he was both a vicious puncher and a far better technical fighter. However, Cuevas was bigger and stronger, and was known more for brutal KO's.

Cuevas would get mashed up by Duran. It would be good for the first 3-4 rounds but slowly Duran's defence would start to show as he would be frsher and the less damaged of the two. I can imagine Duran stopping the prime Cuevas somewhere in the championship rounds.

Yeah, Duran would own him about the same way. Let's not act like Duran was in his prime when they fought.

Cuevas was a bigger puncher but being stronger is certainly debatable. I think Duran was much stronger inside and would always back Cuevas up rendering him ineffective.

You're talking about a top10 p4p alltime fighter against a good solid Welterweight.

Duran wins this fight 100 times out of 100. He didn't lose to crude sluggers.

Believe it or not I saw the actual fight for the first time yesterday. Cuevas was hardly fat, but perhaps he was past it by then. Still, I would figure Duran would win by another knock out, maybe it would go longer.

No, Duran had more of a belly then Cuevas. It was an action fight and Duran was far from a solid favorite going in.

Cuevas was too one dimensional and relied on his left hook far too often. Plus Duarn would maul him on the inside prime or not.

This is a bad fight for Cuevas and he gets dropped 1 or 2 times before the stoppage.

Pre-Hearns Cuevas would be a very hard task for the smaller Duran, but unless Cuevas scored a quick KO then I would guess that Duran would win on points.

Barring the rarity of Cuevas landing a perfect punch early on, I believe Duran would win a clear decision, but I don't believe he'd stop Cuevas. Cuevas was tough, but too one dimensional for Duran. It would be competitive for the first half of the fight, but It'd be all Duran in the second half.

Cuevas couldn't stop Duran with the best left hook he ever threw in his life. Hearns speed and leverage caught Duran with shots he didn't even see.

First off, Duran's defense was too good to get tagged by a onearmed slow fighter. Secondly, Cuevas couldn't throw a harder left hook then barkley did in the 8th round.

Duran had an all world chin and Pipino would have been out of his league in any phase of his career.

I agree. Who ever KO'd Duran, let alone in the early rounds, outside of Hearns... who also happened to KO Cuevas in two rounds?

Just wait till Silkov reads this.. Anyway back on topic..I could see this fight being good for the early going..until Durans better defense and inside fighting helps him score a TKO between rounds 9-10..
