COLIN LYNES (SPOILER)

Post by Deserter »

Know there's already another thread running on this but just felt Lynes deserved one dedicated to him as that was an outstanding textbook performance.
Thought he was absolutely punch-perfect in his dissection of Mutley - his ramrod jab should be used as an instruction video for young amateurs and the way he timed the upping of the pace to force the stoppage was superb.
Also deserves credit for his courage in going into the 'lion's den' for the second time running, and his superb sportsmanship in the aftermath - must admit he's converted me into a fully-fledged fan.
As for Mutley, something clearly wasn't there tonight, but he and his fans deserve credit for the way they reacted to the defeat. Hopefully he'll move back up to welter and rediscover his spark as it looks clear he was drained.
Both fighters are a credit to the sport.

Tom Podmore could probably tell us for sure, but presumably Mutley and his camp thought he'd be able to retain his power, strength and speed at the lower weight.

Mutley should definitely go back up to welter if he fights on. He might not be above domestic class, but there are still some good fights out there for him.

podmore will probably come up with some old rubbish. his very heavily biased article on this fight was embarrassing to read. telling us that mutley can box? he was hanging around waiting for the crude big left tonight while colin got on with the job of boxing his ears off.
i posted some weeks ago that mutley was a genuine welter, podmore replied that i was wrong and light welter suits him best. hhhmmmm...

i must thank the originator of this thread who has stood up and told it like it is about lynes recent form and colin in general. i know colin well and he deserves this. it was a great performance. my favourite boxer is canadian super bantam steve molitor who i have followed for quite a time. tonight lynes boxed almost like molitor, there was a "stateside" aggression to his work that i have not seen seen before. confidence oozed out of his punches from the off. mutley has been knocked clean out of the light welterweight division. bring on branco.

Lynes will beat Bami, Daws, Barnes on current form and Branco as well. I think if you get him an October fight he will deliver he has such a hunger now, his doing it for his dad. He was top class tonight.

excellent post leforge. colins achievements since he got the news about his dad is one of the great stories of recent british boxing. how you keep focussed on boxing and perform as brilliantly as that in opponents back yards is nothing short of astounding. colin you are the man.

A great show sullied by Anthony Hanna's loss to Welshman Ricky Owen. It started as a four-rounder, then went up to six DURING the action, much to the anger of Nobby Nobbs.
Hanna, you guessed it, was stopped in the fifth round of his 99th fight.

You said Gatti would have a chance against Witter too though.

and the Gatti of 12 months ago would have. I don't even think the harshest of Gatti critics, who said he was shot for years, could have predicted just how bad he would look last weekend. The man hadn't fought in a year.. I'm not nostadamous, I couldn't have predicted that - but could only go on his last fight... and I still think the Gatti who gave Baldomir problems would have done the same to Witter at 140 or 147.

Lets not forget, Witter is getting on also - and hasn't been impressive for a while. Didn't Lynes not have great preperation last time, and that fight was close.

Never thought of Gatti as anything more than a brawler who likes to excite crowds.

Witter looks like he's always been the way he Is though.

We'll agree to disagree on Gatti (I'm sure the likes of Branco, Leija and Dorrin will disagree too).

Anyway, I would like to see Witter fight like he did before the Judah fight. In the days when "the Hitter" nickname seems about as apt as Johnny "The Entertainer" Nelson or Herol "Bomber" Graham. Although, it was initially good to see him plant his feet and hit harder... at the Upper Echols of European Level and World class - his power doesn't seem to carry through... and with his current style his hand speed isn't as fast and he tires very early (I think its because he throws with far more evil intentions than before). Because his feet are more stationary, he is easier to hit... and when he is tired, it just cause into a dull fight.

Fighting similarly to the old Witter way with no power has brought Malignaggi a world title... and he has been as exciting as Witter and now a decent attraction. Witter has just looked beatable and boring of late.

His power might of carried If they didn't go Into survival mode once they felt him land maybe.

I prefer him to more to Hatton, he ain't reckless and keeps to boxing. If he listened to the fans he'd be beaten up like Hatton or Gatti. :o

What happened, Hanna has only been stopped once(contaversially) and dropped once(Paul Ingle)

I'd be amazed if this proud fella quit to make a point

Owen is a real good fighter

unfortunately young muttley is the 'pele reid' of the LW/W division, yes we dont doubt his power, but he loads up far far too much, relies totally on his bombs (therefore too one dimensional) and is nothig more than decent domestic class.

ive no reason to diss young muttley, and im not, im just saying it as it is.

There was controversey in an unpleasant scrap between Brummie veteran Anthony Hanna and hard-hitting Ricky Owen of Swansea. Hanna, having his 99th fight, looked remarkably unmarked but took a belting - Owen couldn't miss him with the southpaw left. To compound this, MC John McDonald went over to Hanna's corner at the end of a one-sided first round to inform Nobby Nobbs it was a six-rounder, instead of the four he had announced. Nobby stormed over to Board officials - but six it was, and Hanna continued to ship early punishment. Owen didn't even bother jabbing. He threw his southpaw left as a lead, doubled up on the shot, even turned orthodox to throw it - and they were all caught.
Hanna made it to the end of the fourth but looked extremely reluctant to come out for the 'new' fifth, and referee Shaun Messer had to tell him to keep his hands up as the round commenced. There was no hiding place. Owen showed cleverness to introduce a right hook (after another big left) which caught Hanna flush and dropped him hard. He bravely beat the count but his legs were gone and one more attack from Owen saw Messer dive in at the 1-22 mark.
Hanna was still shaky minutes after the stoppage. He wobbled over to Owen's corner, then gave a rueful look to Board officials as he made his way back. It was only the second time he had been stopped. The first came in 1992. It was only the second time he had been floored. Paul Ingle first turned the trick.
A sad night for the old pro.

Poor Mr Hanna.

A similar thing happened a few years ago during a fight between PJ Maxwell and a dude called Isidro Gonzalez. The fight had been agreed and announced as a 4 threes, but part way through the fight Gonzalez' corner was informed it was had been bumped up to a 6 threes.

Gonzalez took a severe shelacking throughout the fight and was knocked out in the sixth (and final) round. :(

...plus it was his debut. :o He only fought twice after that, and lost both by ko.

How the bbbc can accept this sort of thing.....

Yup, you hit the nail right on the head there. Mutley could probably have ok-ish boxing skills, but he just moves forward, flat-fotted and looks for those hooks that start somewhere in Alabama. It means he'll always been dangerous but will never progress beyond domestic level.

There was a time when I quite liked Colin Lynes but over the past 6 weeks I have become a fan - On this form he could beat Witter for sure - The originater of this thread did a great job with his well chosen words that I totally agree with - Best jab in British boxing right now, but he is getting everything else right as well - Well done Colin.
