WHO ARE THE FAVORITES FOR THE OLYMPIC TEAM NOW
I will indeed. I got a buddy who's from Houston who's in the Army now, his old gym is helping put on the Trials apparently, so we'll see. It'd be pricey though, I'm going to Ringside and then to go visit back to Maryland and go to Houston would be alot.boxmel wrote:Ahhh - sorry for the misunderstanding, Kolya.Make sure we meet if you go to Houston. You can see a picture of me on my web site.

If anyone is going to Houston to the trials and has interest in sharing a room at the Hilton, where the venue is, let me know. Rooms are $140.00 a night and that's with the discount for USA Boxing's block of rooms. I understand that only a couple are left and they are normally $240.00 per night. I have a room with 2 double beds and the boxers are being put two to a room. If I can find a coach that is thinking along the same lines as I am. we can split the cost of a room and still room with our boxer, provided USA boxing permitts. $700 is better than $ 1400 anyday.
Man, do the boxers have to pay that, or is USA Boxing paying for the boxers rooms? Because I think Duran told me Nick and Junior's flights to Houston were paid for, but he had to find one and a room I guess. That's an insane rate, no one can afford that, least of all guys who are VOLUNTEERING as coaches and officials and have day jobs, or young guys who have to sacrifice a lot as athletes to go after the Olympics.boxmel wrote:You've got to be kidding! In the 20 years I've been around I have never seen a room rate that high for any tournament! That's unbelievable and definitely not planned with the coaches and boxers in mind.Rooms are $140.00 a night and that's with the discount for USA Boxing's block of rooms.
All over the place. Sometimes the host hotel is booked and we have to go elsewhere and pay more. Other times it is at the host hotel. It makes boxing expensive.boxmel wrote:Dennis, I don't know where you've stayed - but I think the most I've seen for a national tournament was $89 + tax and I considered that high.I'm definitely glad I'm not paying my own expenses!!!!!
Yes, I am well aware of the monies you coaches spend getting your boxers experience. I have a great deal of respect for most of you (there's always a few rotten apples in the barrel). People seem to forget that without you, there wouldn't be any boxers to provide competitions that need officials or other volunteers. Thank you. .
Almost all of us are volunteers and spend a lot of money to be part of amateur boxing. That includes the officials too.boxmel wrote:Yes, I am well aware of the monies you coaches spend getting your boxers experience. When I say my program is non- profit . it is really non-profit. It's tough but boxing is and addiction as strong as crack cocaine (as I have heard)......except way more expensive. I have always said If I hit a lotto I would travel the country and help out worthy programs. The real boxing clubs that make money are very rare. We loose the clubs, we loose the boxers, Support your local club! A perfect 1-3-2 combination is a terrible thing to waste.
Re: usa
Hal, you're right, boxing is a strong drug. I go to a lot of boxing shows and try to even eat the crappy food sold at the shows to help support the host club. I know how tough it is for a club to fund its program so I try to help anyway I can.squarering wrote:When I say my program is non- profit . it is really non-profit. Here Is My Guess For 2008 USA Olympic Team
106- Luis Yanez(Look Like His Having Trouble To Make Weight)
112- Rau'she Warren
119- Gary Russell Jr.
125- Raynell Williams(if Rico Dont Catch Him B4 3 rounds)Only 7 Boxer At This Weight Class For TheTrials( 1 Got KO and Have 90 Days Suspension) I Think USAB Should Fill Da Spot.
132-Pretty Even Weight Class They Are Beatin Each Other In Real Closes Decesions...I Pick S.ALi Or T.Crawford
141- Danny Gacia Look Real Strong At US Even Da He Lost At the Semis I Pick Him
152- I Dont See No Body Beatin Boo-Boo But It Wont Surprise If He Lost Cuz His Dont Train Hard
165- Very Hard To Pick...I Think It Will be About The Draw Cuz It Seems Da S.Porter Step Up His Game Wit D.Jacob But Cant Beat F. Guerrero...I Stick Wit Danny
178-Christopher Down Is The Guy...He Already Beat All Of The Guys That Made Trials.
201- Havent Put To Much Attention To This Weight Class But If Adam Willet Dont Get Hurt At The Pan Am..He Should Come Out As The Olympian
201+ Mike Wilson Have The Experience But He Been A Suspect In The Last Couple Of Competitions But If He Dont Make It..IT Will Be Michael Hunter

According to the USAB web site, Rosey Sommerville is listed as one of the participants in the 125 weight class. He probably got a 30-day suspension at the Championships; 90 days is rare. Sommerville would have had to be unconscious and not responding for less than two minutes for the doctor to impose a 90 day restriction.Only 7 Boxer At This Weight Class For TheTrials( 1 Got KO and Have 90 Days Suspension) I Think USAB Should Fill Da Spot.

Although the draw can play a key roll in the trials, it's factor is lessoned by being a double elimination tounament, with only 8 boxers. Even if you have a problem with one style or boxer you can stay in the mix to come back around again. Basically it does help level the field and is much more forgiving than a single elimination tounament.
The double-elimination tournament was set up in 1996 to determine the Olympic team in the fairest way possible. In the past, "Most Noteworthy Opponents" were picked politically and controversial winners were declared (Kelcie Banks vs. Eddie Hopson). There were also several law suits, one by Montell Griffin in 1988 when Terry Anderson had been "picked" over him; and two, by Joe Mesi and Darnell Wilson, in 1996 when other boxers had been picked over them. I am really in favor of the double-elimination format. No more "ringers" makes it very fair.

he was out for about 5 minutes...Rico Ramos Stop Him At His 1st Match Of The US...it was a Quarterfinal Bout
Yes, I know Rico stopped him in the quarterfinals. However, if he were actually out for a total of 5 minutes, he would probably be a vegatable and have, at least, a 180 day suspension - if not permanently. I would really like to know where you got your "5 minutes" information. Did you talk to the doctor? Or the admin people?
