Something about me and my gym.

Post by Rockk »

My names Doyle Hughes, my friends call me Darry. Anyhow im sixteen and i used to train about a year ago or so then i starting wrestling, now im back to boxing and ive been training for quite some time now. Ill be fighting 152, im a good size for the class, (5.10 and walk around at about 161) i lift weights constantly so i definately have the muscle to contend in the class.

Im training to fight in the Cal. Pal in september. I go to a gym local to Orlando Florida. The Christian Warriors is what we call ourselves. Im happy to be training there, Rob the gyms owners daughter is a three time amateur world champion, Angel Hamby, Alan Knight a seventeen year old 141 top contender, and my trainer Robbie burwell, seventeen and fourth nationally for 152.

Well, like i said im new and asked around and someone said i should tell a little about myself and gym to get started.

Hi Rockk - welcome to the forum and hope to see you at the national scene in the future. Be careful about the weight training, however. Make sure it's strictly for upper body strength and not for bulk as that will slow your punches down considerably.

I'm guessing you're referring to the National PAL being held in Oxnard, CA. We also have a CAL PAL tournament for California boxers only. Will you still be in the Junior Division in September?

Haha yeah, im a hard hitter for the class i can really swat but im not the most graceful, dont get me wrong i move good and i can evade punches pretty easily but im just not on that natural moving level.
As for speed again Robbie says im faster than the normal for the class but not like holly shit hes fast.

And yeah im Junior Olympic right now, i wont be open amateur until April 5th next year thats when ill be seventeen. Im pumped man, and yeah after reading i saw CALPAL is stricly for cal residents, this one is a national. Sept.30th i believe it is.

Tough place for my first fight but im being told im learning at a great rate and am easily at novice level now but PAL is creme of the crop. so im just filling in the blanks until then.

Tough place for my first fight
Your coach needs to check on the requirements for entering. I believe you must have a minimum of 5 scored bouts in your passbook in order to participate.

Yeah thats what Robbie said, Robbies is the gym owners son. Hes the one mostly training with me sparring with me, everything seing as where the same class and his dad mentors the both of us, he said in the case that i had to have five bouts to enter wed go to a few day shows in St. Augustine prior so i can enter. So maybe i should say it will be my first big tournament.

You should start getting local experience now. First big tournament is right! Good place to start. I won't be there until Saturday, so if you're still in Oxnard we'll have to meet.

Winning and losing in amateur boxing isn't as important as when you're a pro. You need to lose periodically so you get better. Can't learn anything if you do nothing but win. :D

Ummm - You ARE new. I'm not a "man." I'm a 66 year old grandma.

I've never boxed. The sport wasn't available for women until 1994 and I was too old by then. I've been an amateur boxing official for 20 years, plus I am one of 7 others who runs the electronic scoring system for USA Boxing.

The only reason I'm young is because I've been around boxers forever. Gotta keep up with you guys and gals! I'll be 67 in September. And thanks for the compliment, BH - but since you aren't 33 years older, you don't have anything to worry about.

Mel - Weight training - you are correct he needs to be careful, but not just for upper body strength. Lower body strength is very helpful too in boxing. He just needs to be careful to not lift too heavy and tighten/shorten his ligaments and tendons. In boxing, you need to be flexible and have full extension of the joints (especially the elbow joints - so be really careful with arm curls) so make sure you go through the full range of motion while lifting.

Rockk - you need to know that the PAL is an open tourney so many of the boxers there, including the JO boxers, will have over 50 bouts.
