Split infinitives are believed to have crept into common usage in the English language as a result of the influence of Old French at the time of the Norman Conquests. Rules have been introduced - or grammarians have attempted to introduce rules - to prohibit their use. According to Wikipedia: "... split infinitives are far more common in speech than in, say, academic writing. Thus, while an outright prohibition on the split infinitive is no longer sustainable on descriptive grounds (as it was in 1834), the advice to avoid it in formal settings, and to avoid some types in particular, remains a tenable position."

To use or not to use split infinitives is subject to debate, but my advice would be that writers should learn to not split infinitives!
Oh yes, it's a tenable view. But not one I readily share.
Neither do I really. I was only having fun with The Blade. He started it!

Hi gents,

there must also be occassions when the Welsh or Scottish titles were contested on large bills in England, weren't there? I know this is lesser to the original question, and I mean no offence to Wales or Scotland when I say that England has bigger venues as-a-whole, so it'd make financial sense of rboxers with the lesser-national titles to defend them on bigger bills across the Severn-Bridge or Hadrian's Wall accordingly.

best wishes
