Former British heavyweight boxing champion James Oyebola is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot at a London club.
The 47-year-old was wounded at the Chateau 6 club in Fulham Road, in the south west of London.
"I would urge anyone with information to come forward to police and assist us" - Scott Wilson
Scotland Yard said he had been shot in the head and leg in a covered courtyard at the rear of the venue.
Police were called to the scene in the early hours of the morning.
Three men, described as black, fled the club on foot.
A search of the area was undertaken by police, including armed officers.
The shooting is being investigated by detectives from Trident, which examines crime within black communities.
Detective Chief Inspector Scott Wilson said: "I would urge anyone with information to come forward to police and assist us in bringing those responsible for gravely injuring James to justice."

MSN News wrote:A former British heavyweight boxing champion was shot in the head at a nightclub after asking a group of men to stop smoking.
The life of James Oyebola, 47, is hanging in the balance as he remains in a critical condition in hospital.
The 6ft 9ins ex-fighter was shot in a covered courtyard area at the rear of Chateau 6 in Fulham Road, south west London.
Police said the former boxer, who won the WBC international heavyweight title in 1993, asked three men to stop smoking at the club.
One witness said Mr Oyebola asked the men to put out their cigarettes and pointed out that smoking in public places is now against the law.
The witness added: "He was just being a good citizen but the three saw it as a sign of disrespect. On their way out, one pulled out a gun and began firing at James."
Oyebola, of north west London, was shot in the head and leg and was taken to a west London hospital.
It is believed the retired boxer, known as Big Bad during his fighting career, had been working on the door of another club and visited Chateau 6 for a drink.
His attackers, described as black, fled the club on foot. A search of the area was undertaken by police, including armed officers.
Detective Chief Inspector Scott Wilson said the shooting took place shortly before 1am yesterday.
He said: "I would urge anyone with information to come forward to police and assist us in bringing those responsible for gravely injuring James to justice."
Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8247 4553 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I remember his KO of Paddy Reilly (Clifton Mitchell) well. He burst the Ingle fighter's bubble when I thought he was really going places.
Cowardly scum like the men who shot him deserve to rot in jail forever.

In reality they have very little confidence in themselves as they are just very very scared and cowardly.
They are lower than a snakes belly.
Guys like this are just cocksuckers
Get well soon James.

No, you are wrong. The people responsible for the shooting should be hanged, given the lethal injection or the electric chair. Until capital punishment is brought back in the UK, people will do what they want because they know their punishment will not reflect the crime committed.
All this crap about if capital punishment was brought back, people would be killed & they may be innocent. With DNA as adavanced as it is today, & the way it's improving, the perpetrators & not innocent people, would be punished.
Too many do-googers in this country, banging on about human rights. What the human right of the victim & his/her family. This goverment sucks!
I hope they catch the vile cant who did this!!!Rocky Balboa wrote:TerribleTerry wrote:I remember his KO of Paddy Reilly (Clifton Mitchell) well. He burst the Ingle fighter's bubble when I thought he was really going places.

I'd bring back capital punishment for cut'n'dried cases (hard to define I know). UK Prisons are a small deterent (sp) these days....TV, playstation and 3 meals a day is probably a better life than alot of (ex-)cons have outside of porridge.
Anybody watch the 'Brits Behind Bards' series on Bravo when they stuck a dozen British scallywags in a US jail......the yanks don't fcuk about with their prisoners and we should be doing the same. The chicken that the US prisoners were being served had 'Not fit for human consumption' printed on the bags it came in in.

Of course America is a shining example of how successful capital punishment is in deterring violent criminals.

Unlikely though it may seem, I agree with James here. All the data shows that stricter punishment is not a deterrent for crime.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Oh dear, this old argument...Rocky Balboa wrote:TerribleTerry wrote:I remember his KO of Paddy Reilly (Clifton Mitchell) well. Countries that have the death penalty tend also to have very high murder rates.
I especially laugh when I read articles by misinformed politicians/columnists about how we need to toughen up drug laws to stop drugtaking... um yeah even though we have the worst drug problem in Europe and the toughest laws already in western Europe and that the countries with the lowest drug problems (holland, spain, switserland) have the most tolerant druglaws.
Having said that I'm not sure what the answer is.

To be fair James, I don't think that people are looking at capital punishment as a deterrent but rather as some requisite punishment and retribution for a random innocuous incident that led to a premeditated and intentionally fatal act of violence perpetrated by homicidal animals such as these.
And you know, I am turning around to that belief myself. Murders committed against the vulnerable (aged and children) or the defenceless should have a proportional punishment.

It doesn't take a majority does it, 5% carrying guns and needing to be 'the top dog' so hence escalating more and more violent behaviour makes it a massive problem.thepocketrocket wrote:Question, is gun crime in London really that bad? Agreed but there should need to be IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE for capital punishment, if the proof is only just beyond reasonable doubt prison should be prescribed. We don't want to kill innocent peopleSticknMove wrote:
