Does anybody care about SN fighters and SN shows?

Post by Crew2 »

We all know that the big fighters in Britain are Hatton, Haye, Witter and Froch. They hold the proper titles and fight the proper fighters

What about Sports Network fighters though like Khan, Matt Skelton, Joe Calzaghe, Gavin Rees etc? These fighers dont get my juices flowing

Calzaghe for example hasnt fought a single soul since Eubank and Eubank admits he'd have taken Joe if he was in shape, now his promoter has shyed away from the top Americans like Hopkins, Taylor, Wright etc and got Calzaghe yet another average European who nobody knows or cares about. This has been going on for 10 years.! How much longer ??

I dont think anybody outside of Wales gives a flying damn about Rees, Calzaghe etc. I know its hard to sell Calzaghe because of his boring personality, but atleast fight somebody some day, will you? If he loses his next bout, he and his promoter are exposed as frauds. For the good of British boxing, Lets hope he loses

These kind of people have ruined boxing in Britain. The Benn, Eubank days seem a loong time ago unfortunately, but atleast we have hope in Ricky Hatton, and David Haye and Carl Froch -- these 3 can bring back the Benn, Eubank glory days imo

The last 2 SN shows have been very entertaining and I can't wait for JC-Kessler in Nov, I just hope that the standard doesn't drop too much now that FW's got his TV contracts.

The only gripe I have with SN (and its a BIG one) is their conservative match-making and their refusal to take risks.

What I don't understand is why JC and Warren used Eubank as a blueprint.. if they didn't use Eubank as a blueprint then how do you explain them trying to do everything Eubank did, fighting solely in Britain and Europe against Britain's best around the weight, old, B-level Yanks and undefeated Euros, trying to sell out footy stadiums, defending only the WBO title, etc.. on SKY and ITV and the occasional Showtime fight.. they are poor men's Eubanks..

Its a rosy time for SN and Mr Warren..

He was caught in a transitional phase, having champions and prospects who he was nuturing before they moved onto differant levels..that resulted in a few bloody appaling fight nights, for god sake, I didnt watch many of them..

Now it all on the up up up and I for one cant wait

How can you say that? Lacy was the test, he was coming over a bit like McCellen was suppposed to with Benn to sort Joe out and Joe handed out a sublime beating over 12 rounds, one of the best perfomances ever in a British ring.

Has Joe ducked them? These top Americans never fought Joe, Nigel, Chris or Steve and I for one can't believe all those fighters ducked them, Nigel went to the US and fought Barkley ffs.

For the record what proper titles does Haye and Froch hold that Arthur et al have in the past?

Don't forget Warren delivered Hatton the fight of his life at excatly the right time.

Warren isn't blameless for a lot of things said about him but he has the best fighters and now is putting on some quality cards, long may it continue.

I wonder how long before Froch and maybe Haye come over the SN camp.

SN have put on some good shows sporadically. I don't think that is good enough.

SN and W arren are capable and have the boxers to do a lot better.

It's a valid question. Like them or not SN do provoke extreme responses. When I first got Sky in 2004 I didn't enjoy Macca-Lamontagne or Calzaghe-Salem or Hatton-Stewart. Because they weren't fights. And at that time I didn't have the patience to appreciate it as fighter building. At a basic level ppl watch boxing for fights. It can be hard to swallow watching "showcase" or fighter building fights where you basically keep on going, wait till everyone's bored/fed up, and then get the major fight at the right time. There is a science to it, but also there needs to be a better balance of fights and fighter building.

I like watching some Sports Network fighters.

I agree though that it's been disgraceful what Warren and Calzaghe have done, just sitting around for a decade instead of jetting off to the States. They'll look like complete idiots when they jet off to the States next year, having waited 15 years just farting about and bitching nonsense.

You really daont know a great fighter when you see one.

How many times has Jones, Hopkins or Mayweather ever fought outside the US?

Why should Joe have to go overseas?

You operate double standard when assessing Calzaghe. Joe is a truly great fighter, a national treasure in boxing terms.

Look at his record, he has beaten plenty of champions and world class fighters.

He turned pro at 168 at 21 years old and is still dominant at the same weight at 35 years of age.

IMO he is the best we have produced in the modern era. For me he is like Conteh, but with out the waste of talent.

I would add Calzaghe - Lacy to that opinion.

take away all SN shows and fighters, and what are you left with?

the rest of the promoters are not in the same league. SN compete at international level due to a healthy stable of decent fighters, whereas the other promoters can barely host more than a handful of decent shows between them in a year. hatton, haye, froch and woods are entertaining to watch and can draw a half decent audience in an arena and on tv (and hatton used to be with SN, during which time he got his biggest crowd). after that, the other UK fighters outside the SN stable are struggling to get a following.

Completely agree.

What do you reckon is gonna happen in the Kessler fight John? I remember you & I were in the minority on here, predicting Joe was going to do Lacy.

I think Kessler's man has given away a huge advantage here, in agreeing to fight in Wales rather than Denmark.

I can't see Joe losing in front of 60,000 Welsh fans.

These kind of people have ruined boxing in Britain. The Benn, Eubank days seem a loong time ago unfortunately, but atleast we have hope in Ricky Hatton, and David Haye and Carl Froch -- these 3 can bring back the Benn, Eubank glory days imo

I have to say this is the most stupid post I have read and on here that is saying something.

First of all, Hatton does not hold a 'proper' title. Haye doesn't hold any title and Witter (Who Hatton won't fight at all) has the WBC (Turned down M'Baye) whereas Rees holds the WBA after beating a fighter Hatton AND Witter avoided. Froch holds the British (Turned down Calzaghe TWICE) which Calzaghe held that years ago. Khan has the Commonwealth, Skelton has held the British and is the Commonwealth Champion.

Argument one is flawed.

In the laast TWO weeks NINE MILLION PEOPLE have watched Khan, Skelton, Rees etc which is more than have watched
the aforementioned on UK TV COMBINED since their respective careers began.

Secondly, Calzaghe has fought better quality oposition than Eubank ever did, Benn aside. Eubank never lost to Benn, but did to Calzaghe. Kessler is hardly an 'average European' he hold TWO World titles, 'proper' World titles in your very own words. A single soul? Mitchell, Brewer, Lacy, Reid, Woodhall were all World Champions....'proper' world champions, your words not mine.

Argument two...shot to bits!

As for the Benn/Eubank glory day's you should look closer at their opposition and yes, whilst they were exciting times, the live opponents
were few and very far between.

Finally, have you forgotten Carl Thompson, who Super-Middleweight, Eubank took close twice, knocked out David Haye out as an old and inactive man?

You really should do your homework before you come on here as like your post suggests you sound like a proper twat.

Here endeth the lesson.

You rely on Haye, Froch and Witter, we'll enjoy the rest!

Speaking as someone who does their best to attend as many boxing shows as possible around the county, Sportsnetwork shows are a complete turn off. Generally the undercards are poor and the headline attractions can be pretty dire too. You really have to pick what shows you choose to go to.

They do have some very good boxers, as do other promotional teams, but too many of them go too long without competitive bouts so for me it doesn't really matter how good the boxer is if they're going to be involved in a formality of win as is often the case.

SN only react to poor shows when they absolutely have to. If the fans and tv companies didn't kick up a stink after a string of substandard offerings SN would just carry on serving up rubbish week-in, week-out.

To me, Kessler seems a bit one dimensional and he stands still after throwing a punch, so he is there to hit straight back.

Having said that, he is strong and is a terrific puncher. (heavier puncher than Lacy I reckon).

I dont think Joe will have a problem with Kesslers strength, but his hands will need to be in good condition as he will need to land some decent left crosses to get Kesslers repsect early.

Joe certainly has the advantage in hand and foot speed and I think this is where the fight will be won.

Calzaghe to win by a good few rounds, or maybe late stoppage if the pace is fast.

The hands are a worry alright, but I'm sure they "went" against Lacy as well - I mean, did he actualy miss Lacy with a punch that night??

Fair play to SN, last show was top quality and Nov 3rd is another world class event :TU:
