Has anyone mentioned the sublime performance by this 21 year old over the weekend? Amir khan may be seen as a good prospect, but can you imagine if this kid was British? Then we would have something to shout about.

The whole Hopkins Wright bill was fantastic, the main event was better than (I) expected, and the two undercard bouts were blood and guts wars. Great entertainment.

Some have hailed him the new Wilfredo Gomez (Gomez competed in the 1972 Olympics at 15 and was world champ by 19).

He may have the youthful exurberance of Gomez but he lacks the crippling, devastating power of the Puerto Rican.

He was good to watch.

Couldn't help thinking just how capable Linares was without the hype and pampering Khan recieves.

Larios, though old, was live and dangerous.

Maxboxing have produced a few articles gently hyping the Japan based prosepct over the last couple of years. I made note of the name but Saturday night was the first proper look I got at him. He is class, there is no doubt.

There is alot to be said for prospects learning their trade without the weight of expectancy and hype that Khan has received.

And both Larios and Amonsot were released following their respective brain bleed scares.

Fantastic and a future P4P star, no doubt. Reminicent of a young Barrera, the way he'd throw that left hook to the body so much. Really beautiful solid hurtful combinations. Anyone who hasnt seen it, its on youtube:

Strange as it seems, when looking at his record, Gomez was not really thought of a real big hitter. He hit plenty hard of course, but his KO's usualy came from him throwing 15 punch combos and landing every single one of them.

If he's half as good as Gomez he'll be champ a very long time. And I thought Linares looked like he was hitting with real venom in there. One of the best talents we've seen in some time, might even be the best fighter at featherweight already?

I was really impressed. I read Chi is quitting boxing to pursue a career in MMA in which case Linares' interim championship will become the full title. Shame as I think Chi v Linares would be a cracking fight.

He reminded me more of the late Salvador Sanchez, the brilliant young fighter who gave Gomez his first loss when Gomez moved from super-bantam to feather. Linares seems to have that calm quality, the sense that he has everything under control, which I found very reminiscent of Sanchez. He also appears to have the frame to move to 130 and 135 in the future.

Looks like another little gem has come to the fore.

Beautiful boxing on the retreat, poise under considerable pressure and effortless range of punching. Yep it looks like Linares could be around for quite some time given that he's only 21 years old. Elite performance that and he can only get better IMO.

Who says boxing is losing its lustre. You just need to know where to look.

Thanks for the heads P-N. :TU:

Also, Gomez wasn't so great when he moved up. I'm not sure he got the best leverage on his punches. By the time he was fighting Laporte up at 130 he was arm punching and looking overrated.

Linares looks like he can go on to be a better technician than Gomez.

Linares looks like he can be a threat to Chris John, an excellent boxer with an impressive workrate who has been talked of for appearing on Golden Boy Shows.

Fantastic prospect that has been brought along well, out of the spotlight before stepping up in class against a past his best but still game former champ in Larios. Really looking forward to seeing his first defence as I think with more experience he can go on and achieve big things at 126/130. Probably be fighting at Lightweight in 2 years or so too.

Another thing I like is that it shows that even in this world of youtube and saturation boxing coverage, top class talents can develop out of the spotlight and appear from nowhere to surprise us.

Gomez was a tremendous technician and just a very complete fighter early in his career, before becoming overly reliant on his power.

Compare his title winning performance against Kyun-Yum or earlier fight against the excellent Alberto Davila, to Linares fight with Larios and imo the talent level is not even remotely close at this stage in their careers.

Larios reminds me more of Crisanto Espana stylistically.

I agree re: Gomez - he was a fantastic, almost complete fighter IMO. He had beautiful movement, tremendous never ending combination punching and an unrivalled killer instinct.

He wasn't as effective when he moved up in weight, but during his lengthy first title reign he looked pretty close to a perfect fighter for me.

I could watch that killer fight all day.

Great performance by Linares.... there isn't that many prospect who look like they could be greats at the moment, but here is one.

Anyone know if Larios is okay to fight on? All I have read is that he has been released from Hospital - was it just a scare. I would like to see him have another crack (against someone else) for the effort he put in last week. He was really digging in also, really gritting his teeth.

What about Amosont- is he cleared to fight also? Thought he was very unlucky not to win the title. Not on points, but via cuts. Something seemed a bit dodgy there when the DR was asking the ref which cuts were caused by buts, and which by punches. Katsidis certainly will not be a champion a long time.

Boxrec is usually good when it comes to calling a record complete when a fighter has just suffered a career ending injury... They haven't with these two.
