END THE MANAGER DESIGNATION

Post by Jabby »

Paleeeeze! Fighters change their managers/promoters like they change their underwear. More often than not it's a so-called "manager" who declares, without any written contract, that he represents a particular fighter. As an active matchmaker I run into more trouble from fighters who tell me that the designated manager/promoter on BoxRec is NONSENSE.

Solution - 1) Stop listing managers/promoters with associations to a fighter (which would save you an extraordinary amount of editing time, or, 2) wait to receive some documentation from the manager before declaring him the representative of a particular fighter. (not very handible but a solution none the less.)

I suggest that you strongly look at the dissolving of this aspect of BoxRec. You are inadvertantly causing a disservice to the sport. Let me explain. A fan who thinks he knows alot, calls some over-the-hill, semi-known fighters (easy to do) and plays on their dreams of returning to past glory. He asks each if he could represent them - no contracts mind you - gathers 3 to 4 of these "name" fighters and requests that BoxRec list himself as "manager" and is promptly edited in. He has now been validated by a respected entity. Now he can take that validation to new heights of pomposity and, until unmasked as a fraud (it almost always ends that way), causes his own tornado of disruption within the sport.

Believe it or not, some are doing it with malice and others out of pure, grade A, ignorance.

We don't need this! We need these people back where they belong -- as knowledgable fans.

Which certainly can happen, but then there are those of us that have valid contracts that some matchmakers don't bother to acknowledge and try to contact the fighters directly.

Unfortunately, its a double-edged sword....

Manager designation is very helpful to matchmakers trying to track down a fighter. Jim, how on earth could you not want that in there??

Simply because about 90% of the time I'm finding the managers listing as either out of date or erroneous. I'd rather go through and trust someone I know as knowledgeable in the area that I'm dealing with than some "almost always wrong" listing on BoxRec. If I want to deal for a fighter out of the Oklahoma area, I call Bobby Dobbs. It saves me time and in some cases embarrasment. Although the listing happened to be right in this case, I remember doing something similar with you when I was interested in Osin Fagin (sp?). I got the most up-to-date info as possible without having to concern myself with not knowing if I was stepping on anyone's toes.

That may be easy for Oklahoma or a small place. But, try that in California. At least the manager listing is a clue to finding a guy.
