Mayweather fighting Delahoya at 154 is the same amount of weight classes up as Duran against Hagler. And Delahoya probably weighed the same on fight night as Hagler would.jamesmcdonnell wrote: Sugar Ray Leonard and Duran could both stand right in the pocket, blocks incoming shots and make their opponents pay, right then and there. Duran did it against the much bigger Hagler and lived to tell the tale.
Can you imagine Floyd going in with Winky Wright and being able to do that? That's the kind of thing we're talking about because Floyd is basically a lightweight who has moved up to 154.
Now how would Mayweather-Hagler go? 1 advantage Mayweather would have is Hagler doesn't have a vast height/reach advantage (Hagler was only 5'9). He could potentially pot shot and move. But you'd expect Haglers pressure/strength to tell at some point later on to score a late KO or UD based on Floyd getting on his bike.
Middleweights are simply much bigger today because they can dry out and put on 10lbs-15lbs overnight. Hagler today may have fought at 154 or even 147 if he was decided to drain all his fluids and put them back in overnight.

Thanks for the clarification James. Just an unofficial KD that can't be scored by judges it is then.jamesmcdonnell wrote:If the knockdown is not indicated by the referee, then a judge cannot give it as such. A judge could arguably score it a 10-8, but unless one fighter had seriously dominated that round, they would be under severe scrutiny from their local commission, and would most likely face some sort of ban for a period.
As for the KD itself it was legit BUT it wasn't serious.

Oscar is not a true 154 lber, I'm willing to bet that Oscar would have gotten his arse handed to him by Winky at any stage of their careers. Oscar simply isn't big and strong enough at 154 to beat an elite level 154 lber. In my opinion anyway.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Mayweather fighting Delahoya at 154 is the same amount of weight classes up as Duran against Hagler. No way does Oscar weigh the same as Hagler come fight night, Hagler may only have been 5' 9" but he was built like a beast. I would have thought Hagler weighed nearer 170 on fight night, I'd be surprised if Oscar weighed more than 158-160 on fight night, and weight
No way would Hagler have fought at 154.
Watch Ray Leonard's fight with Hagler, compared to Floyd v Oscar, it was a brawl. People talk about Leonard shoeshining, but that is horseshit, he hit Hagler with some mean full blooded combinations, it's just that at 160, Leonard lacked the pop to hurt the iron chinned bald bastard, but he certainly got Hagler's respect.
Go and look at some old photographs of Hagler, and tell me he is a small middleweight by todays standards.

The idea of Hagler fighting at 147 is simply preposterous....I missed that. It would have been like Benn or Eubank fighting at that weight.KO Artist wrote:Oscar would not have fought Haglerjamesmcdonnell wrote:Oscar is not a true 154 lber, I'm willing to bet that Oscar would have gotten his arse handed to him by Winky at any stage of their careers. The thing people don't understand is fighters in those days didn't dry out the same as they do now because they would have to fight the day of the fight. Today fighters can drain water and fight 15lbs heavier than the weight they actually make with litle effect on performance. Hagler would probably come in the ring weighing around 165-166 at the most - thats what a light middleweight weighs today. Thats what Delahoya weighs on fight night because he has that exra day to put the water/food etc back into his body.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Oscar is not a true 154 lber, I'm willing to bet that Oscar would have gotten his arse handed to him by Winky at any stage of their careers. Jermaine Taylor would be a light heavyweight 20years ago
Scott Harrison would be a lightweight 20years ago
Hatton would have been a Welterweight/Light MIddle 20years ago
Mayweather would be a blown up Welter 20years ago much like he is now.
Winky may have beat Oscar but it would have been a close call. Vargas beat a prime Winky afterall and Oscar beat Vargas so Winky isn't a level above by any means. As for Oscar not being a natural light Middleweight - hes actually pretty big at the weight, few are taller, out reach him or are stronger at the weight. He matched the super strong Vargas at light middle and Castillejo afterall. Fighters grow into weights and Oscar certainly would have serious problems making 147 after he moved to 154. oscar was never a real lightweight, he was too drained at that weight, hence his quick move up to Welterweight, where against Chavez he weighed 162lbs!!!!

I don't recall him weighing 162 against Chavez, but even if he did weight is not the be all and end all. Oscar is several orders of strength and punchpower below the likes of Hagler. He doesn't hit as hard as Leonard did at 147 let alone Hagler.
Fighters still used to kill themselves to make weight back in those days, it was just done without the time to rehydrate properly. They also didn't bother weighing them on fight night to see what they weighed, but I'll bet you Hagler weighed in near the light heavyweight limit, just look how huge his back, shoulder and arm muscles are, and his legs are far thicker and stronger than those of DLH, whose are like pipe cleaners by comparison.
Weight and strength are not a direct correlation, I weigh about 195, but I'm not very strong for my height and weight. Hagler was built like a truck and very very strong with it. He would have punched the shit out of Oscar, who was nowhere near as tricky, or hard hitting as Leonard.
well if anyone wants read my anti-Marley rant i emailed him, he has actually posted it on his site as part of his latest piece of tripe which he calls an article of journalism.
It begins "To Michael Marley: Perhaps if you pulled your head out of your own arse long enough to see the sunshine" and ends with my name and sign-off "Matt Merrett", so my letter will be the writing between those two phrases if anyone cares to have a read![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

De La Hoya started off in the same weight class as Mayweather did. I think the size advantage was really very slight. the difference in fighting a true MW would have been substantial.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Mayweather fighting Delahoya at 154 is the same amount of weight classes up as Duran against Hagler. He would destruct and destroy at 154lbs.
He did come in at 157 for at least one of his defences and was often 158-159.
Thing is if Hagler could come down to 154 then so could everyone who had fought at MW during that era.

i have no problem with ANYONE'S opinion and i'm fine with the fact that not everyone can agree, but when this sort of tripe is masqueraded as if its an article and people TELL you the way the fight is definitely gonna go it makes me so angry and this arrogance is ridiculous!! i would never dare tell anyone how a fight was going to go its sheer rudeness. i might share my opinion and why think it but thats all.
There is no foundation for what this arsehole says, no stylistic breakdown, no precedent from where his opinion stems, and no reasoning involved, so for him to post that CRAP and call it an article actually offends my very eyes to read.

Congratulations, thats got to be the worst attempt at journalism that I've seen. It was like reading the incoherent ramblings of a methsed up vagrant. Obviously others have had a similar thought as it looks as though the 'article' has been removed from the site to avoid any more embarrassment.
and I quote

So basically what you're saying here is that if the UK hadn't have defended its self against Germany in WWII then we would have been invaded, what amazing insite.
I was going to rip the rest of your article to pieces, but I'm struggling to remember the diatribe other than your prediction that Hatton won't win a second of any round (LOL), were you one of the numerous Americans who predicted that Jeff "The New Tyson" Lacy was coming over here to whoop the ageing Brits ass????? Did Lacy win a second of any of those 12 rounds.

Good point about Lacy in your reply mate, they never seem to learn do they,,,
Admirable indignation in the reply's there lads, but I can't help but think that ignoring the tosser may have been the best course. He seems delighted that he's provoked some 'thin-skinned limeys'.
Mind you, it's hard to take the guy seriously. Not only was the original article shite, his ramblings in response to the responses are as well. Hatton should fight a few more tune-ups, just so he can make more money? Right, because I'm sure Marley wouldn't have accused him of ducking a real challenge and running from Mayweather if he'd done that..... The fight had to happen now, and who cares about the money? I'm sure Hatton is hardly scraping by on bread and gruel.

Hagler would beat Dela Hoya all ends up, so there's no debate. I think, however, that Hagler could have made 154 these days. Although Hagler was indeed built like a beast, he was, like Hopkins, a man possessed; trained like a deamon and weighed 157 and 158 a few times.jamesmcdonnell wrote:No I DO understand PM I can asure you.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:The thing people don't understand is fighters in those days didn't dry out the same as they do now because they would have to fight the day of the fight.
That tells me with modern 'knowledge' of re-hydration techniques and often 36 hours between the weight-in and the fight, Hagler could have made 154. He would have killed himself to do so, but if Gatti and Dela Hoya could make 130, and Mosley 135, I'm sure Hagler would have done 154.
That's not to say many others could have -- Tommy Hearns, for instance, would still be a full welterweight -- but Hagler, with his fanatical devotion and determination, would have been able to do it.
Not that it matters so much, because Hager is whoopin' anybody south of 168 -- same day weigh in or not.
This wankstain has produced some similar drivel to Marley as can be seen from this article

I really don't like these articles at all -- and not because, like the authors, I'm guided by blind patriotism or that most American of mantalities, ignorance.mattym wrote:This wankstain has produced some similar drivel to Marley as can be seen from this article

I happen to agree that Mayweather will beat Hatton, and that he should be strong favourite to do so comfortably. But why can't we have some intelligent analysis as to why, instead of this gormless tubthumping?
It's actually even worse than the standard of comment I'd expect from the plastered patrons of a piss-poor pub, and, frankly, why internet writers are simply not viewed as journalists by the print media and promoters.
i agree. To me this arrogant professing of nonsense is worse than those 2 guys on YouTube. Those 2 guys have enthusiasm and although they may not know it all, they are just enjoying the sport which is cool. These 'journalists' at boxingconfidential are acting like they know everything but really making themselves to sound like utter plums.Carbo wrote:I really don't like these articles at all -- and not because, like the authors, I'm guided by blind patriotism or that most American of mantalities, ignorance.mattym wrote:This wankstain has produced some similar drivel to Marley as can be seen from this article

Read it mate, Christ you go on more than I do, how long did it take to writemattym wrote:well if anyone wants read my anti-Marley rant i emailed him, he has actually posted it on his site as part of his latest piece of tripe which he calls an article of journalism.
It begins "To Michael Marley: Perhaps if you pulled your head out of your own arse long enough to see the sunshine" and ends with my name and sign-off "Matt Merrett", so my letter will be the writing between those two phrases if anyone cares to have a read

lol true it was extremely long but i wanted to say all those things. if i just said he knows nothing then i'm no better than him and he can write it off as a bitter ignoratn nobody. What i aimed for was to place myself above him by giving a stylistic breakdown (which his article lacked) and question his ridiculous bigotry and horrible use of citing a historical precedent.WildWaylon wrote:Read it mate, Christ you go on more than I do, how long did it take to writemattym wrote:well if anyone wants read my anti-Marley rant i emailed him, he has actually posted it on his site as part of his latest piece of tripe which he calls an article of journalism.

Quite comical in places but it loses its impact due to its length - Anyway I expect you feel better for getting it off your chest, however you would probably have spoilt his day more with DEAR MIKE "YOU NO NOTHING ARSEHOLE" REGARDS MATT - I once had a quick arguement with a cocky American - He said " Where would you be without us in the 42 45 war - My reply was "for us it was 39 45 and it was Europes war as far as America was concerned until Pearl Harbour got bombed - I then finished off by saying "you may have had more troops and more money than us but we had a far better trained fighting force and five yanks were not as good as just one British tommy" which is true, they were bloody hopeless - Before any Americans have a crack, I am half American but born in London
to be honest, calling it comical is the biggest compliment i'm really flattered by that cos i wasn't trying to be funny but i'm glad a couple of people at least agree with me.
Ur right about the war too mate, they don't have the discipline of our forces and are basically on their arse - just look at our boys under 'friendly fire' from the yanks in the Eastern areas!

"The war started in 1939, and your lot didn't come into it, until Winston Churchill decided not to warn you that Pearl Harbour was about to bombed. Sure, we could have prevented it, but we knew that the only way we could get you to bankroll the war for us, was if we let the japs kills a few thousand of your boys. Sometimes you have to let a few yanks die, to make the world a better place....bit like 9/11."
Offensive, yes? But Mike, you started it!"
