WBO Interim Super Middle Title 2004

Post by Coco »

JC defended it Feb 04(Mkrthchian)

Veit won the interim May 04(Salem)

JC Defended it again Oct 04(Salem)

Veit was still defending his interim belt Nov 04(Brewer)

Culminating in their rematch May 05

I had always presumed an interim belt was there if the champion was injured, so rather than strip the champion, the interim belt holder can fight for this belt and then fight the real champion at the first available opportunity.

Instead it seems both belts were active.

Does anyone know why this occured??

Have I made my point clearly enough as my head feels scrambled now!!

I'm near sure Calzaghe was nearing giving the WBO 168 up for a move up to light heavyweight as he kept saying it was his last 168 fight around 2004, so Viet won the interim and as the 175 fights did not happen and he stayed at 168, then Viet was interim holder and Calzaghe stayed full Champion so had to fight him again in a rematch.

Very true Mr Hawk.

There was also a long gap between C;azaghe fights due to an aborted summer date with Glen Johnson, and Calzaghe didn't want to vacate without fighting for a 12st 7lbs title, so the title was in limbo.

Salem had a rough fight with Veit in Germany (headbutting the ref no less! HAHAHA) and got a split decision (not bad for Germany really, against a German!). So when Calzaghe decided to continue with his 12st reign he beat Salem so that Salem-Veit II didn't happen, and meanwhile Veit beat-up Charles Brewer (who'd already lost to Calzaghe).

Then finally Calzaghe WENT TO GERMANY and smashed Veit up to restore 1 title again.

best wishes

They must have thought he was going to go up to 175 and vacate. Defend it till he moves up...But then he stayed down, and then Universum won the purse bid, and I was pissed off as I'd been looking forward to Joe-Magee which got called off.

Yes i was going to mention that. Brian Magee got the short end of this farce involving Calzaghe-Veit II after his fight was pulled. Calzaghe-Veit II was the most pointless, ridiculous rematch ever.

As JC defended the full WBO belt in Oct was was Veit still defendind the Interim, which he won in May, in November.

JC had proved by now he was staying at S/M so was he not forced to defend against Veit straight away, and way was Veit still allowed to fight for the interim.

I thought the whole point of an interim was to keep the belt active, not 2 have 2 belts going!

At this point Mr Coco, even us die-hard hair-splitting-level-of-correctness fans start to get confused.

I think Salem was the Mandatory, so Calzaghe fought him first. Or perhaps Veit signed to fight Brewer first. I must admit I forget.... it could just be that Veit wanted some cash out of his title with a quick defence.

To be honest, I'm inclined to defeatistly say "that's the ABC governing bodies for you".

sorry

I'm probbly splitting hairs again, but how can Salem be the mandatory as he had lost to Veit in his last fight?

Surely being interim champion would make Veit the mandatory

I bet the WBO picked up all the sanctioning fees tho!

You think that's bad ,

January 2005 Pongsaklek Wonjongkam defends his WBC Flyweight title

March 2005 WBC Light Fly champ Jorge Arce moves up in weight and wins an eliminator to become WBC Flyweight mandatory challenger

April 2005 Wonjongkam wins non title fight

July 2005 Wonjongkam wins another non title fight , the next day Arce wins the WBC interim Flyweight title .

October 2005 Jorge Arce defends his WBC interim Flyweight title , 2 days later Wonjongkam defends his WBC Flyweight title

December 2005 , Arce defends his WBC interim Flyweight title , 1 week later Wongjongkam wins a non title fight .

January 2006 , Arce defends his WBC interim Flyweight title

February 2006 Wonjongkam defends his WBC Flyweight title

April 2006 Arce defends his WBC interim Flyweight title

May 2006 Wonjongkam defends his WBC Flyweight title

June 2006 Wonjongkam defends his WBC Flyweight title

September 2006 Arce moves up to Super Flyweight due to weight issues and the WBC not forcing a fight with Wonjongkam .

Arce won 1 eliminator and 5 interim title bouts without getting a shot at the real thing . Wonjongkam had 7 fights and 4 title defences in that period .

2007-about 2 months ago , Jose Sulaiman admits the WBC may have got things wrong as regards Wonjongkam  (who at one point went without a mandatory for 3 1/2 years) .

You thought the WBO were bad ?

Haha in fairness thats terrible, but I suppose if you have an interim champion, a champion and and Emirites champion, you can pick up 3 sanctioning fees in one go!

Next we will have champions and interim champions fighting on the same bill, but not against each other!

It all down to money at the end of the day
