Where would you rank a Hatton victory....

Post by Rocky Balboa »

In comparison with the other great wins by a British fighter i.e. Honeyghan, Buchanan, Turpin, Stracey, Benn, Calzaghe, etc?

In my view, a Hatton victory would place the win right up there, possibly even being the best win by a british fighter in boxing history. We have to remember, Hatton is facing a man who's the best P4P boxer in the world, at the top of game.

Virtually up there with the Turpin win over Robinson. Robinson was obviously better than PBF but was a little on the slide, although still a great, great fighter.
It would surpass Benn's win as McClellan wasnt as proven or good as PBF, and Benn exposed his technical limitations.
It also trumps Honeyghan's win over Curry, as Curry was a weight drained.
And Straceys win over an over the hill Napoles.
That said, I dont want to belittle these immense wins by our British favourites!

Its a bit of a toughie to call. It should be the best single win no doubt... but Hatton is a bit more proven so it wouldn't have the element of surprise that say Turpin vs Robinson or even Hatton vs Tszyu had.

Nobody was saying that if DLH beat Mayweather it would be considered one of the greatest wins of all time, cause it didn't have the "MAJOR UPSET" value, a bit like this one. Upset yes, major upset no. Honeyghun vs Curry, Hatton vs Tszyu, Robinson vs Turpin, Stracey vs Napoles had this value... Benn vs McClellan? Not in my view.

As opposed to calling it the single greatest performance, it will boost his chances in calling him the single greatest fighter this country has produced.

I think Benn-G Man was the biggest upset. People forget the aura Mcclennan had back then, he was perceived as invisible, people were tipping him to beat RJJ AFTER RJJ-Toney, he'd basically just jumped in and knocked everyone out in 1 or 2 rounds, with perfect timing and placement, he looked phenomenal.!

Nigel on the otherhand had not looked like a bomber at 168, his 160 bowling days seemed long gone and he looked horrible against Jiminez inhis last fight (SHOWTIME had Jiminez winning!) whereas Mcclennan had blew away a p4p in Julian Jackson in a single round at an MGM main event. Nigel was looking as vulnerable as ever, shaken up against the ropes in his last 5 or 6 fights in a row

I, like everyone else, did not give Nigel a hope. I thought he'd be out of there inside three rounds without any shadow of a question really unless he could somehow pull out one of his old fireworks from yrs and yrs earlier

I give Ricky at his best a v.good chance of constantly switching his left to body upstairs to the head and following it up with straight rights alnight, over and over, and forcing PBF back, and beating him. I really do

I gave Ricky little chance against Zoo if im honest, he was supposed to be tailor-made for Zoo by bouncing in and out and being in range and so hittable with the right, but he smothered Zoo to bits and was just razor sharp and didn't stop coming, shocking me. But I gave Nigel Benn less chance against that Mcclennan

On a sidenote, why is Lennox-Holyfield/Tyson never seen as a great British win - don't know how you top beating 1 of the great HWs

Also don't forget Fitzsimmons-Corbett

SRR even if he was past his prime has to rate higher than a blown up Mayweather. Although SRR may not have been at his best that night and showed to be the better man in the rematch

Well the biggest single win by a British fighter in a major upset is a lot different from a win from a British fighter against a widely regarded P4P No.1, when he already has substance coming into the fight.

But that aside, it would be HUGE and right up there. No doubt there will be the over analytical who will pontificate about its merits vis-a-vis the other fights involving British fighters.

I would say that it may well be the best simply because of where both fighters stand in their careers and with what's on the line. There can be no excuses for either coming into the fight and no excuses afterwards.

This of course presumes that Hatton wins and I for one have serious reservations about that outcome. And that in itself would make it the best for me.

Would be ranked in the top 3.

If Ricky was to win this fight, would it make him Britains greatest ever fighter?

Ricky should have taken this fight in 08.

It could be closer than we think.
But a loss is a loss.
Bad timing from team Hatton.
At best he could make it entertaining and build his name up more.
But the zero looks gone.

What difference would it make taking it 2008? Hatton's at his peak right now. Why wait?

Horseshite. A loss to Mayweather does zero to harm his legacy or earning power.

If Hatton loses but pushes Mayweather hard and close, then there's a good chance of a rematch too.

No, you can't say a 'loss is a loss' in THIS case.

I'd say practically anyone in the sport within a 14lbs or so of Mayweather can be forgiven for getting their butt kicked by Floyd. The guys a phenomenon.

Should Hatton win....this would top the lot for me. It's always been Honeyghan's win over Curry, but this will beat them all if Ricky can do it.

The Butch,

I agree, as good as Hatton is he is not in PBFs league and so a win would put it into the "very best" bracket.

Evander,

I agree with a lot of what you say.

No way should Hatton be taking this fight just yet. Yes I can see the economical sense behind it but for Hatton to go straight into this fight at Welterweight makes no sense.

I am very interested in who Hatton gets in as sparring partners, they have to push Hatton from the very moment he steps into the ring.

Some suggested Witter, ideal but never going to happen. But the sparring needs to be awkward, unorthodox and quick hands.

The more I think about this the more I think a Hatton victory has to put him into the NO1 slot of all time British greats. It is not going to happen.

This will easily rank among the top 3 if he wins. Has a British fighter ever beaten the generally regarded P4P no 1 (of the time) before? Curry was close as, I guess, SRR must have been (waaaaay before my time i'm afraid).

Also if Hatton does do it, then he will have to be regarded as among the top 3 p4p in the world at the moment surely (as much as it will rile the yanks). And no Brit has ever done that before.

Can you explain why he should not take the fight? He is in the prime of his career, coming off the back of the second of two top level fights in 2 years, is unbeaten and highly regarded arond the World. Maybe, financially he could have a couple of easy pay days and hope Mayweather waits for him in a couple of years, but that's not Hattons style. He's said all along he wants to be the best and that to be the best he has to beat Mayweather. This is his opportunity to achieve his lifelong ambition, as well as giving the boxing public exactly what they are asking for. It's a no-brainer.

I think it does effect his earning power stateside. He would (I imagine) go back to Light Welter and will just be considered a decent fighter in a devision with no star. He is not a DLH in terms of star power yet, stateside.

I do believe Gatti's ability to sell tickets wained post DLH.

Not saying he will become a nobody, but I think he will struggle to sell out the bigger venues. Will the British fans still come out to support him? Its a lot of money.

I'm bored with this. We ask it before every fight involving a Brit. I don't care.

Mostly Brits simply don't compete at the highest level so they go in as massive underdogs. Ricky's not about that.

It would go down as big as God knows what. When was the alst time a Brit was considered the man i his division, a pound for pound star, compteted with success in America, beat a couple of highly touted rivals, and then faced the consensus pound for pound number one.

All I know is this: if he wins, Hatton goes top 3 p4p behind Paquiao, and perhaps one or two others.

Everything you have said I am fine with that.

Ricky could take a homecoming fight at Wembley or the MEN build on his increasing impressive reputation in the states and still collect around the one and a half million pound mark to say thank you for the fans.

He could then perhaps do the same in the states but this time prepare himself at Welterweight and earn another million and a half.

By then not only the brits but also the states will be screaming at the bit to see PBF come up against this limey who is causing a stir but perhaps then Hatton could take an even bigger slice of the cake, in monetary terms where has he lost??

I am telling you right now in boxing terms at Welterweight there is no effing chance Ricky Hatton beats Floyd Mayweather Jr, and don't kid yourself PBF has taken this fight just for the money. He has taken the fight because he really and truly believe he will hammer Ricky.

I actually think Ricky's only chance is if Mayweather goes into the fight over confident and yes there is a serious chance that could happen.

All of you boxing experts can look at this fight as much as you want, but PBF is a truly exceptional fighter in every department, it was only a short time ago the majority of you lot were slagging off Ricky Hatton, you were slagging off his opponents even Jose Luis Castillo and you were slagging off Team Hatton and everyone associated with Ricky Hatton.

Now many of you are talking up Hatton's chances as if you were one of the very few who were actually on his side.

I think we have to wait until we see the fight before we can make comparisons. There are many factors that can make this fight not as good as what it should be.

I dont think the win would be the #1 greatest win for Great Britain...I still maintain that Bob Fitzsimmons winning three titles in three different divisions (being boxing's first triple crown champion) is still the #1 spot, then Lewis winning the HW crown and then throw in the argument of Turpin, Buchanon, etc for the #3, #4, #5, etc spots.
