What ever happened to Dorian Melamed?
What ever happened to Dorian Melamed?
Maybe you guys from the east coast, New Jersey area can tell me what ever happened to this guy? He retired after 6 fights, all wins, and never lost an amatuer fight. I ran into his debut fight the other day and he looked like a powerful cruiserweight.
Damn knightbox, you must have read my mind!
Seriously, while on my post about the Norton - Brown fight I was writing about Hank Kaplan's old BOXING DIGEST magazine & the indepth stories it used to feature on young up & comers, clubfighters, trialhorses & journeyman. One such piece being a story on Melamed.
I remember how it recounted how he won a national amateur title against a much more experienced pro in the finals & then turned pro shortly thereafter. The story made it seem as if he was going to be a huge fan favorite & success. But he never went very far, just those handful of pro fights then nothing ...
I did see him in a four rounder on one of ESPN's early TOP RANK BOXING telecasts from AC in 1980 & he looked fairly average while winning, so perhaps, while contesting his first few pro fights he and/or his people realized that he wasn't going to make it as a pro & he hung 'em up?
I don't know, but I'm just as interested in finding out about what happened to him as you are.
Anyhow, thanks again for the "blast from the past".
