Olympic Trial 2007 Picks to win it all
But for all intents, under this year's system, didn't they qualify for the trials by weighing in on the day they're suppose to?boxmel wrote:Not this year. MELLLLLLL!, Where are you? I can see you now biting down on your finger just dying to chime in and everyone would love to hear what you have to say.........But, you can't because someones feelings might get hurt. Pretty soon well have a policy, "No boxer left behind" Maybe we could do it in code.
Kolya, now you've confused the issue! But for all intents, under this year's system, didn't they qualify for the trials by weighing in on the day they're suppose to?
Squarering, I have agreed to not make any comments regarding boxers and their chances as the athletes have perceived it's a conflict of interest if I do so. Now, considering there is absolutely nothing I can do to impact the decision as a computer tech, it does seem rather silly. However, as I've stated before, the boxers have enough stress going into the Trials I definitely don't want to add to it.

Hal - I love the "No boxer left behind" idea, NOT!!! LOL.squarering wrote:MELLLLLLL!, Where are you? Maybe we can be like little league sports where nobody WINS since "we are all winners". Every bout can be an exhibition! Oh wait, USAB does not allow exhibitions. Why? They still happen, but they aren't recorded in the passbooks. I think they should be allowed and entered in the books.
Where are your picks?

Dennis, although I can probably make some calculated guesses, I will give you all my predictions on the 26th. I am an expert at predicting the past. Sometimes the guy you are rooting for isn't truly your pick to win. Plus I have a conflict of interest. In the end, I just hope our best chance in Bejing is representing us.
I understand why coaches and officials don't want to make predictions b/c it sometimes does offend or hurt the feelings of certain members of the boxing fraternity. I have had some boxers, coaches and officials get upset with my predictions. Luckily I have thick skin. If someone doesn't like it, go prove me wrong and win. It has happened a few times - LOL. Jimmy the Greek, I'm not. WOW - that dates me.
The reason the rule became hard and fast was because a majority of those having "exhibitions" did not record them in the passbooks - and there was no way to find them out. Most of the exhibitions in the old days were not those that followed the age and weight rules. I agree we shouldn't have them because there are too many coaches who still like to break the rules and I never, ever want to compromise the safety of our boxers.Oh wait, USAB does not allow exhibitions. Why? They still happen, but they aren't recorded in the passbooks. I think they should be allowed and entered in the books.
I, too, will give my predictions on the 26th.

Alright Dennis, just to humor you here is a few thoughts. I like 152 Boo Boo ,he is like a camillian and adapts to just about anything. But Hatley thinks he may have his number and both he and Kieth Thurman are coming to get-r done. I just think Boo Boo has put himself in a position that will cause any opponent to have to do more than just enough to beat him. I believe both of these guys are coming in believing that they have to take it out of the judges hands. This could make for an upset. If neither one can get to him in a big way I look for Demetrious to hold his spot.
Quaid is strong, very strong, I have worked the mitts with him and he he puts everything into every punch,,but I have seen him bull in and his feet out of wack. He will take it to Warren and is stronger and hits harder, but Warren doesn't make many mistakes and that will be the difference. Warren waited 4 more years to to do this. He obviously knows what he wants and may just want it more than anyone for that reason.
In the big boy division, I know that the lure of pros has started and it might break the focus of a couple of the guys that don't want to wait till the end off 2008 to turn pro. That little question mark in thier head can make the difference. I do know that Hunters eyes are on 2008 only. He is awkward to box just like his dad was and if he stays focused he will have a good shot. Still big Nate is very quick for his size and has good coaching. Mike Wilson can never be counted out. I have to wonder what effect the Pan Ams were on him, positive or negitive.
I like Gary Russell, always have. I've known him and his dad since he was a little guy , well a very young little guy. Big Gary has a good handle on his son and I believe he is ready to let ot all go on this one. In the past he has won with a few lack luster performances, but he still got the job done. He won't be lack luster in Houston.
The USA Championship gold medal for Yanez, then in the Pan Ams will give him an edge in confidence and he is a sharp guy to boot. He will hard to get past.
Molina made a big statement at the USA's and took prime canadate out of the mix. A guy that went on to win a gold at the Pan AM . He looked very good and the qustion is can he be on his mark again. I like Garcia and Soloman. This will be another good one.
Middleweight , ahhhh I forgot who's in that division.

106 LUIS YANEZ TO WIN BUT DIEGO HURTADO AS THE SLEEPER PICK.
112 RAU'SHEE WARREN ... IT DOESNT LOOK LIKE THERES ANY CHANCE OF ANYONE BEATING HIM
119 GARY RUSSELL UNLESS HE HAS PROBLEMS WITH HIS HANDS IF THATS THE CASE THAN ROBERTO MARROQUIN
125 RAYNELL WILLIAMS FOR THE WIN .... TROY WOHOSKY HAS REALLY IMPROVED SO HE WOULD BE MY SLEEPER PICK
132 IN THIS WEIGHT CLASS I THINK ITS BETWEEN TERENCE CRAWFORD & SADAM ALI
141 I THINK JAVIER MOLINA WILL TAKE THIS IF HE FIGHTS LIKE HE DID AT THE US CHAMPIONSHIPS BUT IF NOT THEN I WOULD PICK DANNY GARCIA
152 DEMETRIUS ANDRADE IS AN OUTSTANDING BOXER WITH A REALLY SLICK STYLE AND I DONT SEE ANYONE BEATING HIM
165 THIS WEIGHT CLASS IS WIDE OPEN...IT JUST DEPENDS ON THE DRAW
178 CHRIS DOWNS SHOULD DOMINATE THIS WEIGHT CLASS WITHOUT ANYONE COMING CLOSE
201 ADAM WILLET SEEMS TO BE THE BEST BET UNLESS HE HAS PROBLEMS WITH HIS SHOULDER .... IF SO THEN I WOULD SAY DEONTAY WILDER
201+ MIKE WILSON IS MY BET FOR SUPER HEAVY, HE HAS ALOT OF EXPERIENCE AND HE'S BEEN IN THIS POSITION BEFORE.. I THINK THIS WILL BE HIS YEAR

Solid picks J-Box. I can't fault you for any of them. Troy Wohosky - I don't see him winning so that is a big sleeper pick.
152 - Demetrius. You stated that you can't see anyone beating him. He is beatable. I have been in the opposite corner several times. I worked with Kenny Porter when Shawn Porter defeated him in the U-19 last year (it was at 165#). Don't get me wrong, he is very good and he is also my pick to win it. His dad, Paul, will have him ready and I think he will win, but Hatley and Thurman are tough like Squarering said.
Hal - I know you know the names of every guy at 165 along with their ages, stance, style, height, reach and shoe size (oops - I guess I wasn't supposed to tell that you know that much as you might have to explain how you have infiltrated their camps to gain all the knowledge - LOL). I know that you might not want to give any locker room material to your potential opponents and I can understand. I think I know who your pick would be. I agree with J-Box - a lot is going to depend on the draw since styles make fights and some boxers styles are better suited to face certain opponents than others. I also know that certain boxers are a lot more likely to get hurt in certain bouts than others. There is also the unknown factor - like what happened with McPherson & Berto in 2004.
