Ryan Waters won the junior middleweight IBO Asia Pacific & the IBF Australasain titles last night at Cronulla leagues club. Just one thing I don't understand. How do you win the junior middleweigh title against a lightweight (Omongos) who's had 3 wins & 9 loses. I hear that the original opponent pulled out, so wouldn't that mean the title is nolonger up for grabs. Waters looked to box early & when he picked up the pace the towel was rightly thrown in to save the over matched Omongos. Waters nearly ready to step it up but needs to fight his own weight class first.
John Cotterell had a cracker of a fight back at lightweight with a new Philipino face Jun Paderna (21-6-1, 14 KO's) very close until Cotterell sat the Philipino down in the 6th with a left rip to the lower rib cage. Cottrell took some huge shots & fought back strong every time to land more shots then Paderna. An absolute war & the crowd was on their feet the whole fight, I'm sure Cotterell will be welcome back in that neck of the woods any time. Paderna will cause some upsets as long as he doesn't fight over the lightweight limit.
Batty went throught the motions to score his 8th win against Arnel Barricuatro.

Omongos took the fight on two days notice and was overmatched at jnr middle which is about 7 kg north of where he should be fighting.
As for Jun Paderna...this kid took the fight with two weeks training after not fighting for over a year!
Once this kid gets fit, he gives everyone a hard fight. I'd love to see a Coterill rematch but I doubt they will want it after Paderna came close to having Coterill out of there.
Still, credit to Johnny for showing enormous heart and will to come back strong. I think it's obvious that a fully fit Paderna knocks him out if they fight again.

Sure Johnny may have looked in trouble a couple of times but the fact is he didn't go down & fought back even stronger every time and won the fight. Another 30 seconds and he wins by KO.perfect jet wrote:Omongos took the fight on two days notice and was overmatched at jnr middle which is about 7 kg north of where he should be fighting.

Paderna came out swinging wild in the first round which caught Johnny of guard. He didn't really slow up until 1/2 way through round 5 so his fitness look pretty good to me. Johnny would fight him again no worries. Would prefer to fight over 10 or 12 rounds. Would be a good fight but I say Johnny stop him next time.
I agree John did look to have Paderna in real trouble at the end of the 6th round and predict that he would stop him in a return fight over the longer distance. To say that Paderna was not fit is a surprise, I haven't seen two fighters throw as many punchers per round in a long time. I know it was only a six rounder but they threw more punchers then most 12 round fights (& 99% were fully loaded).Boo Cotterill wrote:Sure Johnny may have looked in trouble a couple of times but the fact is he didn't go down & fought back even stronger every time and won the fight. Paderna was gassed afterr the first rd...what fighter is fit with two weeks training after having not fought for over a year???
As I said, credit to Johnny for finishing strong, the kd he scored was through fatigue...Paderna took a rest.
I hope their is a rematch...look, lightweight is not Paderna's natural weight but regardless, he proved he can still hurt Johnny at 61kg so with a decent prep he will finish him off next time. No doubt.

Paderna may have fought nearly 11 months ago and only arrived in Australia 2 weeks before this fight but you can't say that he wasn't fit concidering the pace of the fight. The guys here to stay for at least 12 months your saying he got on the plane with no training at all. These philipino boys do nothing but train.perfect jet wrote:Paderna was gassed afterr the first rd...what fighter is fit with two weeks training after having not fought for over a year???

Yep, that's exactly what I'm saying. Arrived with NO training!
and I think i'm a little better qualified in this argument as to whether Paderna was fit or not.
