When is Calzaghe going to step up to the plate?

Post by STP »

He's a huge, huge favourite with all the bookies for this next one against this unknown guy. When he beats his next opponent, it would have been TWO YEARS since the Lacy fight so where are the Taylor's, Hopkins's, Wright's?

Has he missed the boat, or has he missed 20 or 25 boats? I watched Calzaghe-Christie last night and laughed at the Sky team saying how Calzaghe has to really start getting a move on if he wants to be a great, and start fighting great names. That was 11 years ago. They said the Liles, Collins, Jones Jr, Michalczewski fights would be easy to make. So why haven't they been made yet? There's Rob Reid on there calling Calzaghe an arm puncher, like that Lacy guy did and this Kessler guy did. He still hasn't learned to turn those knuckles over, which is why he'll break his hand in his next fight just like he has in every other fight. Will anything ever change? Will we be here in the year 2018 saying the same things?

If Calzaghe's promoter doesn't have the ability to make the fights, then TV should boycott Calzaghe. If Taylor looks back to his best against Pavlik, that is next, otherwise Chad Dawson, other boycott. That's it. That's what it should be. Not a balding Hopkins like there was a balding Eubank.

I'm sick to death, man.

Have you been hiding under a rock? He's signed for a unification with Mikkel Kessler.

Who? Has he ever been on TV? I must have missed him. Anyway, Calzaghe is a huge favourite. He wouldn't have been a huge favourite against Liles, Collins, Jones Jr, Michalczewski, Trinidad, Hopkins, Echols, Ottke, Toney, Jirov, Tarver, Johnson, Wright or Taylor.

This is either a joke or you need to get up to speed with world boxing. Calzaghe Kessler is the fight 90% of boxing fans wanted to see. 2 unbeaten super middleweights unifying the division. As for Kessler being a nobody because he hasnt been on TV... !?! go look at his record.

Your just being a twat mate..

I agree nothing will erase the fact that Calz went from 93 to 06 without fighting anyone in their prime, but atleast he holds his hands up and admits that he was a shy sick note homeboy getting pissed up in cardiff when he should have been training and fighting, and is now trying to make up for it by taking on genuine threats in Lacy and Kessler..

Also Calz doesnt claim to be anything great, it's not his fault that Warren and Mcguigan talk their shit, but Reid, Starie and Richie were the best of British and Sheika, Brewer and Mitchell were the best of America- thats not mentioning Eubank and Lacy.. all he lacked was that elite european like Ottke, and now he's got Kessler..! The resume isn't actually that bad at all for a british super middleweight of the 97-07 era, and now he plans on fighting some light heavies like Hopkins(albeit ancient), Tarver(albeit ancient) and Dawson(albeit unproven).. its not bad, not as bad as you make out..

Oh and Kessler has a Real shot in this fight, if you care to watch his last few fights.. he has the best jab in boxing, an excellent right hand, very fast hands and great movement and is allaround accurate.. it'll be a cool fight imo..

I would blame blame both sides athough Joe Is so good It's understandable that Kessler doesn't want a whooping.

The boxrec schedule Is being blasphemous It seems.

I think if he faces a light heavyweight it will more likely be Erdei. Erdei's been starved of a big fight and has Kessler-like skills (if not physicaly strength). It would be easy to make a fight between long time WBO champs & if the Joe-Mikkel European superfight goes down well there could well be another.

Wouldn't be surprised to see an all British world title fight with Woods - both are on Setanta. It's not like one side can say "we want cable PPV" and the other saying "we want it on terestrial". Ppl will like this fight on these shores.

Hopkins doesn't really fight anymore. Based on the 2 Taylor and the Wright fights, he's on that borderline where you have to question if he's actually landing professional punches.

he may arm punch but that gives him great speed to flurry (as is the case with WBO flyweight champ Omar Narvaes and Commonwealth light welter champ Ajose Olusegun). look at the Woodhall fight where he was SINKING in body shots & tell me they were arm shots.

Kessler can draw about 40,000 in Denmark, is internationally respected in Canada, Germany & Australia, is more highly regarded worldwide thatn Ottke, and has been showcased on HBO where Kellerman, Steward and co were impressed.

Seriously what editor took that off the schedule without proper sources?

Are they a closet Kessler fan wanting to shield fans from the fact Joe Is giving him an assss whoopin?

Terry D wrote:I have not been able to find anyone from the Kessler camp talking about the fight since it has been signed. Am I missing something here? It all seems to be coming from the UK end of things. I read a Danish report on the 27th of July that says they are said to be negotiating but no word since.

I really hope this is not Hatton-Harris redux.

Where is Kesslers statement concerning the fight?
I was going to say exactly the same thing. You would think if they are genuinally confident about the fight then they would be making a lot of noise about it.

Perhaps Mogen Palle the promoter of Kessler feels it is W arren's job to promote the fight and his fighter will go about his business quietly and then make an almighty noise when he beats Kessler.

I find the Palle approach a little bit strange if he has the Scandanavian TV rights or perhaps there is no interest over there and Team Kessler are only interested in turning up beating the opponent and collecting their money.

The one hope I am hanging onto is Kessler does not have a better offer out there, unless of course their view is to make a number of easyish defences which would total up to what he would get for the one fight against Calzaghe.

I'm going to pick Kessler. No one's giving him respect. If it was a lunge and cuff Hopkins, an ear muffler fat greedy bugger like Winky, or another sawn off left hooker from America you'd all be creaming your pants.

I think he looks like Patrick Bergin as Robin Hood.
yes, he looks like a soft, stupid, comic caricature, which aided all the bad feeling after the Manfredo disgrace.
