Deaf boxer

Post by Alister »

A few years ago I read an article in a boxing magazine about a deaf fighter. Recently I've grown curious to read it again, but as my luck would have it, I can no longer find the magazine. All I can remember is that he fought in the 1930-40s and that his nickname was something like "Silent Sam".
Anyone know which boxer I am referring to and could tell me more about him?
Thanks!

I know who you're talking about. He fought in the 40's and battled Jake LaMotta twice (D10, L10). I think his name was "Silent" Eugene ______. I can't quite remember it all.

Also, there was a fighter named Silent Stafford, but I think he's a different guy.

Thanks!
Hairston was not at all a bad fighter, twice fought Kid Gavilan (1-1) and Jake La Motta (0-1-1). Beat Paul Pender and went the distance with some other strong names.
Anyone ever seen him fight?

saw him fight on television several times.. good all around fighter....good punch, good mechanics and tough. classic boxing ran a tape of his fight with lamotta within the last year. he lost, but it was a good competitive fight. check him out on boxrec...you'll find some good wins.
