Someone has to communicate with the general boxing public or nobody will know what is going on!boxmel wrote:Sheesh - now you sound like my husband!!!!Different opinions are not necessarily a bad thing, but it's just that I'm right and Mel isn't. j/k Mel.
I don't really think there is a "right" or a "wrong" - just differences of opinions. Sometimes I, or anyone else, might have more information than you and vice versa. I think we all learn through communicating - geez - what a novel idea - communicating! 8)I don't mind being wrong from time to time.
Olympic Trial 2007 Picks to win it all
Around the end of every year, WCAP holds an Army tournament in Fort Carson. This gives all interested Army personnel a chance to make the team. This method probably keeps any discrimination suits from happening. 8)So does anyone know how the tryout for the WCAP works. It seems to me that they would just accept a boxer who has won a national title or a boxer who has had more than 100 bouts and has performed well at the national level.

Hal - a coach teary-eyed? Wow - you must be human.
And this is even BEFORE the tournament!!!
Dennis, I haven't heard anything so far. I guess we'll know after all the boxers come in on Sunday. I'll list any changes here.Does anyone know if there are any boxers pulling out of the Trials? I would hope not, but things do happen.
If I went back in it would be Army, yes. It's a family thing. But I got booted for asthma because the AF gave me it's version of the asthma test (methacholine challenge), and I finally lost more than 20% of my lung capacity on the last and highest dosage they could give me. So according to them, I have asthma.boxmel wrote:Ahhhh - so you'd "re-inlist" with the Army? And how can the AF discharge you with a medical problem you don't have? Interesting. I would never be a recruiter. The stress is unbearable.
I passed my physical tests just fine, which is the weird thing. What they do for asthma is have you blow into a tube which feeds into a computer; which gives your baseline lung capacity; and then begin having you inhale the chemical methacholine; and then breathe out into the tube again to test how your lung capacity drops. Mine dropped more than 20% on the highest dosage they give (each time the dosage is double the previous amount; and methacholine is I believe a histamine designed to trigger attacks; I heard the test was something like a 97% failure rate). Ah, that was fun coming home; considering my dad was a paratrooper and LRP in the '60's.boxmel wrote:How weird. I've always had the test where you blow into the plastic tube thing and it measures your lung capacity. Did you get booted in boot camp, i.e., didn't pass the physical???
Oh, of course. I'm no where near the stage where I would join up, much less try to get to WCAP. In all honesty, if I were to join the Army and were even thinking about WCAP, I'd want to have at least 25-30 fights, if not more. Getting more experience is one of my goals.Dennis wrote:Kolya - I would get some more experience if you want to be accepted into the WCAP. I'm not sure a novice boxer is going to pass the tryout.
My local paper just did an article about me and my club going to Ringside. Man, you have to be careful with papers. They took something I said as a joke to the reporter and used it as a serious quote! Now I look like a cocky jackass.
Oh yes! Definitely got to watch what you say.....I was interviewed many years ago for one of the top pro boxing rags (no longer in publication) and most of my "off the record" quotes got printed. Made me look like a real jerk! I'm very, very careful now.....I usually ask to see anything before printing. My local paper just did an article about me and my club going to Ringside. Ouch. What were they interviewing you about? This was for the most part a harmless quote, but I had said it as a joke. And now it's in big bold letters as their little stand out quote on the second page of the article. They asked about getting hurt or hit and how we box (the difference between Amy and I, me having come up in the DC area and her from Montana); and I said "for me there's two considerations: did I win, and did I look cool while I was out there?". And they used it as a serious quote.boxmel wrote:Oh yes! BTW, Mike, thanks for posting that video; it was great to watch. Is the one in green at the begining Jacobs? He looks really smooth and sharp if it is; I saw a little clip of him fighting Porter from the Nationals (it was the 4th round) and both looked a little sloppy due to fatigue I guess; and I heard that fight was a slug out. He looks really sharp and smooth though. Love watching videos like that and trying to learn from it.

No problem, my pleasure to provide it, and thank you to all of them for allowing me to film it.
Yes, Jacobs is in green.
In Jacobs corner is Mark Breland. On second day session, can see Evander Holyfield watching, and I think there's a few small clips of Rocky Juarez working out in another ring.
Sorry for quality, google resamples and makes it fuzzy. I have high quality original file if anyone wants it email me and I can upload it somewhere.
Jacobs is PAL champ and has an impressive AM record, like 150-5. I was told Porter just out-muscled him in Co.Springs. Very tough weight division.
There are interviews on there with Jacobs, Thurman, Breland, H.Williams, & S.Ali as well if interested. I will have more soon.

Russia doesn't have a box off; per se, they have a training camp and then the coaches select who they feel would perform best on the team. Typically it's the guys who won the National Championships and have succeeded internationally, but not necessarily. This year there were some big upsets; so the training camp will offer the guys who lost a chance to redeem themselves before the team is selected.
Kolya and Mel - we have all learned to be careful how you say things to reporters. Another thing I don't like is how they will take your first sentence, omit the next 4 or 5 and then throw in the next one. It takes things out of context, but makes it sound different than how it was intended. Whatever you do, don't be sarcastic or you will look like a jerk.
so did u get to spend some time in the 319th TRS too??Kolya wrote:I passed my physical tests just fine, which is the weird thing.
