I passed my physical tests just fine, which is the weird thing. What they do for asthma is have you blow into a tube which feeds into a computer; which gives your baseline lung capacity; and then begin having you inhale the chemical methacholine; and then breathe out into the tube again to test how your lung capacity drops. Mine dropped more than 20% on the highest dosage they give (each time the dosage is double the previous amount; and methacholine is I believe a histamine designed to trigger attacks; I heard the test was something like a 97% failure rate). Ah, that was fun coming home; considering my dad was a paratrooper and LRP in the '60's. :-?

I was kind of wondering if that would cause an uh-oh when he posted it. I heard of the rule, but I don't think Mike realized some USA Bozing people post here. Just out of curiosity; why is that rule in place? I heard pros aren't even supposed to train at the same time as amateurs in the same gym.

Mostly insurance. Our insurance only covers registered members of USA Boxing. If an amateur spars against a pro and gets hurt, the amateur's insurance is void and we could get sued, rightfully so. If amateurs don't train at the same time as the pros the chance of sparring with a pro is reduced to nil.

And USA Boxing couldn't defend itself by saying they were sparring with an unregistered member unless that rule is in place? Makes sense. I guess that's why my coach makes everyone who joins our gym register; so no liability stuff can come up.

A lawyer would have a field day, especially if it was a catastrophic injury. Did you know that most of the injuries that USAB's insurance is paying for are those that happened in the gym? Very few are competition-related. And every time an injury happens, our insurance premium goes up. I believe that there is only one insurance company in the U.S. who will cover boxing.
I guess that's why my coach makes everyone who joins our gym register; so no liability stuff can come up.
Yep. That's why it's the best practice for a gym to register with USAB, thereby gaining a million dollar liability coverage. Having all the non-athlete and athlete members also registered guarantees coverage in the event of an incident or injury. Wish more coaches were like yours.

Last hour predictions:

106-Luis Yanez
112-Rau'shee Warren
119-Gary Russell Jr
125-Raynell Williams
132-Terrence Crawford
he has the skills if he can keep out of trouble for a year.
141-Andre Sherard
coming on strong
152-Demetrius Andrade
I think he is focused and ready
165-Shawn Porter
Focused, training hard, ready
178-Christopher Downs
201-Anthony Tettis
another athlete training hard
201+-Mike Wilson
I think his maturity and experience will overcome Hunter, who has been unfocused last several months, in my opinion

I wish each and every one of these athletes the very best, and watch those hurricaines!! Take your swimfins to Houston!!!!

When were you imprisoned at the 319th? I hardly know anyone I was down there with anymore; except a friend of mine from KC I got together with at Ringside.

Mel - could you please site the section of the current rulebook that prohibits an amateur boxer from training or sparring with a professional boxer. I see where it says that an amateur boxer cannot compete against a pro, but that is it - see page 7 and page 151.

Page 7 states "An amateur boxer shall not box against a professional boxer....." Also - "No competition may be held between an amateur and a professional." "An amateur boxer shall not box" applies to sparring, as determined by Rules & Regulations committees and National Board of Review in years past. I didn't see anything pertaining to this on page 151.

Mel, I respectfully disagree.
The rule on page 7 actually starts on page 5.

"101.9 Restricted participation.
***
(9) Professional contests.
(a) Professional/amateur contest. No competition may be held between an
amateur and a professional. An amateur boxer shall not box against a
professional boxer or professional athlete of another sport. Pro-am cards are
permitted provided they are strictly overseen/controlled by the LBC in which
they take place and in accordance with guidelines set down by the national
committee for pro-am boxing. Note: Pro-am cards are those where
professional boxers appear on the same card as amateurs.
(b) Competition and professionals in other sports. Competition with or against
professionals in sports other than boxing during a tryout, in which the
amateur boxer is not paid more than expenses allowed by USA Boxing, Inc.
shall not be construed as a violation of this article.
(c) Promotion for personal profit. No boxing promoter, manager or any other
person shall be allowed to promote or conduct any amateur boxing show
solely for personal profit. Appropriate personnel may be employed to direct
a program of boxing for the benefit of the sport. All individuals or
organizations may receive a proportionate share from an investment made by
them, provided the entire conduct of the meet or competition is under the
strict control of USA Boxing, Inc.

The rule is discussing contests. If the rule makers wanted to say train with or spar against, they could have said it. They didn't so I think the plain meaning should hold, which is an amateur boxer cannot compete against a pro. Almost every top amateur in the U.S. trains with and spars against pro boxers. They have to do so to get the necessary sparring.

I think USAB would lose if this issue was litigated unless they change their rules. If they are smart, they won't change the rules because they know the amateur boxers need the training experience.

Dennis, you're right about Boxrec's format - right now it sucks!

We're going to have to agree to disagree on the "rule." I told you what was explained to me, i.e., "cannot box against a pro" is the unclarified don't spar a pro statement. As I started out by saying, everyone does it and everyone knows it's done, but you just don't want to broadcast the fact - just in case. I know a former amateur boxer who got a concussion sparring with a pro - had to go to the hospital - and then turned around and competed a week later. It's a good thing he didn't die from Second Impact Syndrome.

On another subject - I'm off to Houston in the morning. I'll check in on Boxrec as frequently as I can, but it probably won't be as much as I can when I'm home. Will definitely let ya'll know if there are any changes in the boxers.

The concussion from sparring with a pro can happen sparring anyone, even a 41 year old coach. Except I usually take it easy on newbies while some pros don't.

Mel, keep us all posted on the happenings in Houston. I hope the hurricane doesn't interfere with the trials in any way.

Dennis and Mel. I am checked in and the boxers are coming in as the day goes by. We flew on the plane with Dominique Wade 165 and Gary Russell 119 as well as Josh Parsons Super Hwyt and a couple more. On the bus from the airport , there were a few others including Boo Boo and Paul Andrade. I love the atmosphere of this as many people from outside boxing still love the Olympic spirit and it is nice to attend a compitition that the public has a strong iterest in. Mel call rm 11066 when you get caught up I really would like to meedt you. Man there is a major hurricane coming to Houston, Oh and we're supppose to have some bad wheather as well.

Hal - it's just a little rain. Did Wade talk to you or does he avoid you? I know most of the guys Jordan has boxed would talk to me, but there were a couple that wouldn't.

Keep us posted.

After a true nightmare of a day (United flight cancelled in morning - engine didn't pass inspection), rebooked on American, had to go through security again and got pulled aside for a complete search, finally go to Houston at 6:30 p.m. Dennis, I rode from the airport with ken Porter (who remembered dancing with me at the Championships in 2005). Hal - I'll be at registration in the morning; I'm in room 7007. Heard that two boxers didn't make it - I'll know who tomorrow.

I've been told that Houston never gets hurricanes. Might get the spin off wind and rain from Dean, but it's too far inland for the actual storm.

Dennis , We ran into Dominique and Gary waiting at the gate. It is just common nature and courtesty to say "hey how you doing" and thats what we did. You are right that some boxers choose to not talk to opponents be fore a bout but I believe you can carry it too far. In the ring you are up against a style not a personalities.

All boxers reported in with the exception of Gabino Saenz (106) and Rosey Summerville (125) who pulled out with weight problems. 86 boxers are ready to go. The top 4 boxers are being seeded in the draw - first time that's been done at the Trials.

I predict Hunter wont be the only #1 seed to lose opening round looking at the brackets. Some very good bouts, a shame there isnt a live feed hooked up for those of us that cant be there live. Maybe by the next Olympic year.

Some good boxers are going to have to battle their way through the loser's bracket for a shot at winning the Trials after losing their very first bout.

106: Yanez wins easy. Singleton wins in a close one. Hurtado wins the easy way - W/O. Ceron wins in a close decision in the rematch against Lozano (this is my upset pick).

112: Warren - can it possibly go beyone 1 round? Maybe. 2 rounds? No way. Warren wins easy.
Qa'id Muhammand has a tough bout, but I see him winning. Alafa wins easy. The other bout is tough to pick. I think Escalante wins, but it could be close.

119: Sammy DiPace got a good draw for the opening round, the other bouts are all tougher.

125: Raynell Williams wins easy. Caferro v Pagan should be a good bout. William (Hylon that is) wins over Wohosky. Ramos takes a nap as he wins by W/O.

132: 3 tough bouts w/ Menard getting the easy draw.

141: Javier Molina wins unless he let the US Championships go to his head. Jeremy Bryan v Danny Garcia is a tough bout - pick-em. Sherard wins in a tough bout against O'Connor. Dallas loses to Solomon, but it should be a great bout.

152: 2 Army boys battling right off the bat and Dolton v Thurman being a tough bout. Hatley and Andrade should cruise into round two of the tourney.

165: Fernando Guerrero v Angel Santos - Fernando wins easy. Estrada should easily defeat Hardrick. Nelson v Wade - tough one, but I'll say Nelson. Porter wins again vs. Jacobs. Danny will taste the canvas at least once or twice against Shawn.

178: Crane and Riley got the tough draw. Downs and Shabazz will win, but Shabazz got the easy draw. Spencer v Kearney - someone is going to get stopped.

201: Deontay Wilder v Anthony Tettis - tough bout to predict. It depends on which Tettis shows up. The one who was pounding on Willett in the 4th round in Colo Springs or the one who didn't perform well in the Nat'l GG. Lawton and Guzman got the easy draw in facing each other. Willett defeats Carey even if his shoulder isn't 100%. Graves and Zimmerman is a good bout. If Graves uses his hand and foot speed and boxes Zimmerman, he will win easy. If he tries to trade, then he could have some trouble. Zimmerman is strong, but slow.

201+: Hunter v James - what a shame I can't see this one. Shepherd v Moore - I don't see either one winning the trials. I hope Bethel can beat Thompson, but he has work cut out for him in trying to cut off the ring with the quick footed Thompson who must usually wear sprinter's spikes. The fact sheet says that all boxers must wear boxing shoes/boots and that might slow down Thompson from a 4 minute mile to a 5 minute mile! Mike Wilson cruises into the second round of the tourney.
