Magee V Cherifi
Magee V Cherifi
Brian Magee looked good tonight for my money in dismantling Hacine Cherifi, Cherifi toom a controlled beating before his corner retired him before the ninth. Tony Dodson found a new lease of life in round 11 to stop Alan Foster with some well picked shots, i missed Williams-Rutherford but i believe Williams took that one.
And finally i actually GOT A PREDICTION RIGHT! Lol, well sort of, i said Jamie Moore would stop Andrew Facey in 6 on a previous thread, he did it in 7.

I hate to put a dampener on your prediction, but Dazzo Williams won it, Steve. I thought Rutherford was unlucky, but it was a close fight.steve689 wrote:Brian Magee looked good tonight for my money in dismantling Hacine Cherifi, Cherifi toom a controlled beating before his corner retired him before the ninth. Yeah sorry i meant my prediction was for Moore-Facey not Rutherford-Williams! And yeah apologies i meant Williams won, don't know why i typed the opposite. Lol must be tired from work, just finished :) Have just amended the error strewn post!bennie wrote:I hate to put a dampener on your prediction, but Dazzo Williams won it, Steve. Facey showed guts and wasn't disgraced against Moore. He's from your neck of the woods, Steve. He hails from Horseley Fields in Wolvo, though he's now living in Sheffield.steve689 wrote:Yeah sorry i meant my prediction was for Moore-Facey not Rutherford-Williams! Yes, so i read today Bennie, i was unaware of that before the fight. Horsley Fields isn't the best of areas so maybe it is no surprise it breeds a few "fighters"
I like Moore though, he beat Michael Jones well and then Gary Logan. I think a fight with Takaloo or Richard Williams would be interesting.

I was disappointed in Cherifi on the night. he looked so shot it was unbelievable & offered nothing on the night & Magee should have got rid of him earlier.
I was well impressed yet again with Jamie Moore though. Facey was a good test although his defence was awful! I have rarely seen someone leave there chin hang out to dry like that & Jamie punished him for it
Did any of you guys think Moore was knocked down though? I have to say I think he was although it was obvious he wasnt really hurt just caught of balance
Jamie is fast becoming one of my favorite fighters. Manchesters next big thing? I think so :)

I didn't catch the bill so I would appreciate your answers to the following questions that I have.
1) Did Magee do a better job against Cherifi than Howard Eastman.
2) Do you think Magee should be / could be ranked the second best SM in the UK (i.e. ahead of Reid and Cateley). In other words do you think he can beat these former world champions now.
3) What was your scorecard for Williams vs Rutherford - I have heard (skysports) that Rutherford got robbed and was a clear winner, is this the case.
4) Who will win a rematch between the two.
5) Who was leading the Dodson vs Foster fight at the time of the stoppage.
6) Can either progess beyond this stage, and who would give Carl Froch the toughest fight.
7) Who did the better showing against Moore, Facey or Jones.
8. Did Sky show that heavyweight on the bill with the decent record that I mentioned on here (his name escapes me - but I think he's something like 29-1).
9) Any other thing worth noting.

1) Magee won comfortably enough but Eastman was landing with more damaging punches IMO.
2) I think Magee will have to actually beat Reid to be ranked above him. He's been matched carefully up to now so we can't be sure he's the real deal.
3) I had Rutherford winning by 7 rounds to 5 but it was close. Williams really fought through his fatigue well.
4) I think a rematch would be just as close. Neither could seriously hurt the other.
5) We only got the last 2 rounds, Dodson was well ahead apparently but looking just as knackered as Foster.
6) Dodson would give Froch something think about I'm sure.
7) Didn't see much of the Jones fight but Facey did well whenever he didn't get clipped. But a couple of the knockdown punches really messed him up. He'll never go anywhere holding that chin so high.
8 ) Do you mean Albert Sonowski or whatever his name is? No we didn't see him.
9) What a cracking place that Kings Hall.
Magee looks quite ordinary to me. Doesn't do anything really badly but does nothing that makes me think he's a future great either.
He's probably got enough in the size and strength department to ensure he spends a few years in the top ten in a weak division contesting various belts but it looks to me like a good fighter beats him.

Although I missed his last fight I do generally agree with your statements there Goz. He's not done enough to warrant a top ten place yet, he's probably in the 10-15 bracket now and I think would be deemed a worthy voluntary defence if the champions are struggling to find an opponent.Goz wrote:Magee looks quite ordinary to me. I still think Mads Larsen is this devision's danger man.
I ve never been overly impressed by Brian MAGEE and his performance against Cherifi did not change my mind. Cherifi looked far more ring worn than he did against Eastman, but despite this and despite his advantages in youth and size Magee was far less impressive against Cherifi than Eastman had been. Also the main damage Cherifi suffered against Magee was the cuts which were caused by head-butts.
Magee is a ordinary boxer in a weak division.... he'll probably pick up a few more titles but only of the moderate variety.... I'd pick Eastman to beat him if they fought.... it's a shame that Howard seems to have been frozen out by all the champs at both Middle and super-middle.

I thought Magee did a good job on an admittedly worn-looking Cherifi. He banged well to the body and certainly showed more fire than he has in the recent past. Steve Collins raised what I thought was a very interesting point on Ringside recently, when he said Magee won an IBO title too early in his career (his 14th fight I believe) and simply didn't improve for a while as he defended his worthless crown against a series of similarly worthless challengers. But the opposition has got better recently (Andre Thysse was a good opponent anyway) and Brian does seem to be improving.
I think he is better than he looks.
I think he is better than he looks.
The biggest waste of talent in the super-middle division is Robin Reid who has done hardly anything since his close fight with Calzaghe.... Reid is now due to fight Ottke and I pick him to win if he can reach his old form..... Reid vs Magee would be interesting.... doubt Magees people will ever let him anywhere near Reid though!....

no problem, you could hardly blame Reid for taking t he Ottke fight anyway but I do remember his promoter saying at the time that there were 2 offers on the table for Reid, a world title fight in Germany (which most assumed was Beyer at the time) or a fight with Magee.silkov wrote:I sit corrected!....![]()

8)
In an ideal world Reid would beat Ottke, would then defend against Magee with the winner taking on Calzaghe. I think the first two scenarios are possible (i.e. Redid beating ottke and defending against Magee) but the Calzaghe fight probably wouldn't be easy to make. That's if Joe hasn't moved up to light heavy by then anyway.

I don't think Reid will beat Ottke, I doubt he can get the level of fitness he needs in time, and he isn't as ring sharp as Ottke, who has defended his title 3 times already this year. He has a shot as Ottke is looking shaky, but he won't win by outboxing him.
Reid has to use his strength and jump on Ottke, it's not his natural style, but it's the only way I can see him beating Ottke.

I read your preview on Maxboxing.com, James, and I think you've got it spot on. As you say, Reid has a chance if he can slow the German with body shots and then pile it on to the head. But Robin has never been a busy fighter in terms of workrate and I just don't think his workrate will be high enough to sway the judges in Germany. More than that, Robin can be pretty spiteful in there and they won't stand for any of that against their darling Ottke. Anthony Mundine had TWO points taken away for reckless headwork against Ottke with no prior warning. That kind of sums it up.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I don't think Reid will beat Ottke, I doubt he can get the level of fitness he needs in time, and he isn't as ring sharp as Ottke, who has defended his title 3 times already this year. I think Reid can Beat Ottke if he is on form by over powering him... Reid is very strong and a good boxer too, the big question mark for me regarding Reid is his fitness and desire..... he hasn't fought enough recently and the fights he's had have been just marking time fights, and how hungry is he now?....... I could see Reid if he's not really up for it getting frustrated by Ottke and allowing himself to be out-boxed while he looks for one knockout punch....... but still I go for Reid
Good points Silkov, IMO Reid is as good as Ottke in all departments except maybe defence. He is stronger and hits harder however if he falls into the same trap Antwun Echols did against Anthony Mundine and look for that big shot he will fall behind on the scorecards regardless of whether he is being outboxed or not. David Starie showed Ottke is nearing the end of his career, forget the ludicrously wide scorecards in that fight there is no way Ottke is losing a decision now at this career stage. A better fighter than Starie would have put Ottke to sleep in that fight, Reid needs to use his jab well and cut off the ring as Ottke attempts to snake out and win dubious rounds. If he can land some of those right hands that had Calzaghe shaken all those years ago then he will have the champ in trouble. If anyone wins a fight this year then i hope it is Robin Reid, i've always been a fan and i think the Germans have made a big mistake choosing him as an opponent even at this stage of his career. But can he turn back the clock? If he can then he wins.silkov wrote:I think Reid can Beat Ottke if he is on form by over powering him... For me Reid's chances are slim and none. Say whatever you like about Ottke but those old legs never let him down even towards the end of 12 rounds.
Rightly or wrongly all the champ has to do to win is stay on his feet for the full 36 minutes which he will most certainly do no problem. And in any case Reid is far too predictable for a man of Ottke's experience.

Reid did state after his last contest, that he intended to go to the body against Ottke, which surprisingly, I have not really seen anyone else do in a sustained fashion. Ottke is not the kind of fighter you can headhunt and win.
However, as you say Bennie, Reid's workrate has never been phenomenal, he spends far too long posing and admiring his work and feinting trying to get openings.
Another factor worth mentioning, is that although Ottke is not a man known for stopping people, several people who have fought Ottke have stated that he is surprisngly heavy handed, and physically very strong.
Whilst in his peak form Reid was probably the strongest super middleweight I've seen since Eubank, he looked soft and far less muscular last time out, and I wonder whether he can get that physical strength back in such a short period of time at his age.
