Will 2004 for Joe Calzaghe be better than 2003

It would be hard for it to be as bad as this year, with only 1 fight. I think Calzaghe may well get his hands on a light heavyweight title belt, which although probably won't be that impressive and will be against a lower calibre fighter like Branco, will still revitalise his career.

It can't get much worse - I mean two title defences is all he needs. I think he'll manage that. I can't see him moving up to Light Heavy in 2004 - he's to determined to break Eubanks record defences of the WBO Super Middle crown. Thats Calzaghe's goal, and he'll do that fighting poor fighters.

I say his hardest fight of next year will be fighting a Mads Larsen, Syd Vanderpool - someone of that callibre. He might fight Brian Magee by the end of next year - so it will just pip his 2003 achievements.

Ottke will be retired in 2004, and I can't see any of the champions facing him and I don't see a move to Lightheavy untill he beats Eubank's record, which won't be next year.

if I was being as positive as possible I'd say that there are (in some respects) more options for him than ever:

Tarver
Jones
Hopkins
Mundine
Beyer
Lucas
Ottke
Dariusz

but in reality, unless there is a dramatic alteration at Sports Network I'd expect another couple of dull defences and a few derisive offers to some of the above to excuse the crap defences

Totally agree here Stu, unofortunately it is only the Boxing hardcore like ourselves that demands Calzaghe fight a big name, Joe and especially allegedly knows he will pack the Welsh venues and most English venues everytime, be it against Bernard Hopkins or Tocker Pudwill and the Americans, well....i doubt they really care what he does to be honest.
