Kid Akeem (Akeem Anifowoshe)

Post by Rafael »

Kid Akeem's (Akeem Anifowoshe) record appears as ending in 1991 with the Quiroga fight (when he got the blood clot, nearly died, but then recovered). However, I once read an article (might have been in The Ring or Boxing Illustrated), where the author explicitly stated that the Kid continued to box upon returning to Nigeria (where lax local commissions alowed him to go on). Anyone heard about this? I wonder if there is any kind of record of these bouts. My guess is no. If there is the possibility that these fights actually took place, maybe his boxrec entry should state so and indicate that the record might be incomplete. In the meantime, let me see if I can dig the article out.

I think you're referring to the interview with trainer Miguel Diaz in KO magazine. s far as I can remember it's not clear from the article whether Kid Akeem was just working out or had starting fighting again.

Akeem

I doubt it, because I never read KO magazine. I believe it was either an article on medical safety for fighters, or an article on Akeem (at the time he died). The article emphasized that foreign countries such as Nigeria have poor regulation of boxing, and commissions allow boxers to fight with little or no medical scrutiny.
