Your pickfor Estrada vs.Guerrero
I believe that Estrada will win this one since so far he beaten Guerrero, but Guerrero momentum is high so he might pull the upset.
No kidding; I remember Mel saying he gets overcome sometimes and just self destructs; he's really gotten it together it seems-I'm very surprised he beat Jacobs so well. He said in his post fight comments too he's been working on staying calm and all that as well.Dennis wrote:I'm very surprised by Estrada's win. He seems to be having the tournament of his life.
Kolya - It looks like Estrada has improved, but if Porter wins the challenger's bracket Estrada will have his work cut out for him. Porter has beaten Estrada both times they have faced each other. Estrada can be very dirty, but Porter has the strength to handle it while some of these other guys don't. You can take a slick boxer out of his game by boxing dirty, but a guy like Porter just handles it. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 2 nights.

He's only like 2 inches taller than Porter; and he's not as old and I doubt as physically mature if I remember correctly. Porter just looks like he's strong as heck.
Yeah, I didn't think he was as old. Hasn't he had success internationally as a cadet though (Wade)? I think that with the way the tournament is progressing we could end up with Porter as the US rep and I don't think that would be good; I'd llike to see us in the running for as many medals as possible and I don't think Shawn would fair well at something like World's or Olympics because of his style and size.

That must be why Jacobs is appealing it; that's the first I've heard that Estrada may have been fouling.Quickhands wrote:I understand jacobs lost to estrada, but the fight was digusting and estrada tactics got the best of jacobs.I think jacobs will win his next set of fights. he beat estrada twice before.Im pulling for jacobs and if he dont win mr.shawn porter
Porter's power is a nice thing to have in a tournament like this. The easiest way to beat the champion twice is to knock him out and then win by walkover.
I think Russell will come back and win at 119, but nobody else at 165 has shown a lot of consistence, which will be needed to beat Estrada twice in two days. Also Russell has benefited from a day off because of DiPace's injury, and I don't think any of the 165 guys have had that luxry.
Not for nothing, but a lot of the articles about the fighters makes them sound like pretty decent guys (although complainey about the scoring of course). I haven't read anyone with a nice thing to say about Dominic Wade, who still comes off as pretty arrogant.

Porter can do well internationally, especially now with how the officials handle those international bouts. They allow a lot of holding, wrestling, etc. and Shawn is strong enough to deal with it. I know he got caught in his bout in the Pan Am Games, but I hope that was a fluke. Shawn won the '04 Pan Am Cadet Championships, he stopped a Russian, and he defeated a boxer from the Ukraine. He lost in an international bout as a junior against Fernando Guerrero (who he just defeated in Houston) when Guerrero was representing the Dominican Republic, and has lost 2 bouts to two different Cubans. He also lost to a Venezuelan boxer in Venezuela (go figure). That is not too shabby of an international record for a young man of 19 (he will be 20 in October).
That is very good for his age. I just remember Jeff Lacy getting RSCO'd I believe in Sydney by Gaidarbekov; and I don't know if Porter would fare any better against Korobov.Dennis wrote:Porter can do well internationally, especially now with how the officials handle those international bouts. I seem to have gotten the same vibe from people about Wade. Maybe someone who has seen him fight and been to the tournaments more can explain it; but I'm from the same part of MD that he's from and even though everyone says he's a great fighter, they don't seem to like him very much.emile wrote:Porter's power is a nice thing to have in a tournament like this. Guerrero
I wonder if Guerrero will try and represent D.R. once more now that he didnt make our Olympic team. I heard Stan Martyniouk is not representing Estonia which had been a possibilty earlier in the year.
Wonder who else trys for another country, more time this year then in the past for the trials losers to find a place.
