Thurman just overwhelmed another foe with his massive punching power.. Scored an 8 count just before end of 2nd and Melson's corner stopped it before the 3rd began..

Interesting story about Russell in the Washington Post. I was wondering how he could be struggling like this, and apparently those who knew him could see it coming.
But the pressure of the looming Games has a way of eating at athletes. And Gary Sr. has seen it slowly gnawing away at his son. Little Gary, now 19, had lost his aggressiveness in sparring sessions, the father worried. The fists that flew so fluidly and quickly were more tentative. Instead of combinations, he was throwing more single punches, trying not to vanquish opponents but rather throw just jabs to score just enough points in fights to advance to Beijing.

Gary Sr. hates this. He calls it "fighting the tournament and not the competition." And he recognizes it as a sure way to lose quickly and for the past three months he has been warning his son not to let it happen. One night he took him out onto the porch of their home and showed him a tree in the front yard, reminding the boy that every fall the leaves would fall off but that each spring they always grew back. Forget the Olympics, the father said. Even without Beijing, life would still go on.

But Monday, against Marroquin, Gary Jr. fought the tournament. He went up 8-2 on points in the first round and then tried to sail through the rest of the four-round fight. It was a flawed strategy. Marroquin, desperate, began punching, and Russell didn't counter. And when he did, it was not with the flurry of fists for which he is known. By the second round, the lead was gone, and at the end of three, Marroquin led 16-15. A late, frantic run from Russell wasn't enough. Then it was over.

Gary Sr. was furious. In the convention center hallway, he berated his son for not heeding his warnings and later mockingly said "He fought like Sinatra," then he began to sing "I did it my way!"

Downs lands huge right hand very early in bout against Kearney, dropping him. Referee counts but Kearney looks hurt.. Downs stalks and lands another right hand, referee stops in and stops bout.

Some fans think too quick, but after such a devasting flush shot, referee did the right thing, IMHO.

Bethel upsets Wilson

Both very cautious throughout bout. Neither jab effective, but Bethel got better of the few exchanges.

Bethel

Post by holeymoley99 »

Bethel is the King of the close win. Opening round over Thompson and now Wilson, back at the U.S.championships tiebreaker over Jonte Willis (13-13, 27-25) even his loss to William Moore at the US championships was a tiebreker (12-12, 26-26,5-0).

Hunter better be very careful about Kimdo in the finals because it should be a nailbiter.

No, he fights in the Challenger's bracket today. He should have too much talent and quickness, plus experience, for Leija, and make it to challenger's final vs. Alafa, where he can earn another shot at Warren on Saturday.

The bout was stopped quickly by the ref. Two 8 counts off of single landed punches in the 1st, then after an exchange in the 2nd, the ref just stopped it. Qa'id didnt take it well and shoved the ref, but later apologized and all is forgiven..

A certain gold medalist talked with me and expressed extreme displeasure in the stoppage..

In the same ring, the following bout saw Leija rocking Franklin many times with big shots, and never a single 8 count was called..

Do you think DeRae more susceptible because of his RSC loss on Monday?

It appears that way, but Kearney's got huge power in his right hand as well, so most likely both combined to make it such a devastating stoppage.

Luckily, all that happened to DeRae was that his nose has been broken in several places. He was taken to the hospital and given a Cat scan. Becuase of the nost injury, he will never box again and is okay with that. He's going to finish school, get his degree, and go into business - another success story. :D

That must have been one heck of a break to end his career. It's always sad to hear that, but great that he's going to go to school and is set on making something of his life-he made the Olympic Trials, he can always hold his head up and be proud of that; it's something so many amateurs only dream of doing.

Aside from that, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how Caferro looked against Rico Ramos, what happened? It seems he did better than at PAL at least. And also; if anyone even remembers, how Nick Swan lost. I know he got RSC'd once, just curious how because I may have to fight him at state next year; maybe.

Swan lost his only 2 bouts at the trials. He lost to Shabazz and then Crane stopped him in the 4th round (RSC-H). Now keep in mind that Crane can punch. He slugs a lot so in a lot of his bouts he either knocks out his opponent or gets knocked out. In the '04 NGG finals, Crane knocked out Cedric Agnew after getting rocked himself.

I saw Nick lost immediately; as we suspected would happen. I'm just curious how he was beat, what the guys did; besides just being much bigger.
