kell brook and john fewkes nominated for award

SHEFFIELD'S flourishing boxing scene was boosted today when it was revealed two city fighters have been nominated for the prestigious Young Boxer of the Year Award.
Hillsborough's Kell Brook and Norfok Park's John Fewkes, both 21, have been shortlisted for the honour which, in the past, has gone to the likes of Amir Khan, Alex Arthur and Enzo Maccarinelli.

The winner of the award - also once scooped by Sheffield's Ryan Rhodes - will be announced at the Boxing Writer's annual dinner on October 22 at London's Savoy Hotel.

The Sheffield boxers face stiff competition from WBU featherweight champion Derry Matthews, 23, and Welsh prospect Nathan Cleverly, 20.

Still can't believe Derry Matthews is in the running. Only had 1 fight this year - the highly debatle points victory over John Simpson where he was also nearly DQ'd.

Doesn't reflect well on British boxing imo.

Yeah Fewkes has cemented himself as a genuine, exciting prospect this year and has a headline victory in his points win over Tontchev.

Fewkes for me too - he looked the business vs Tonchev - if he can add some more pop to his already impressive arsenal he could be a future champ IMO though hard to say at what level yet....

Fewkesy has made me a fan of his, so I hope he gets it. I find him great to watch, he's like a Tasmanian devil in the ring.

Hang on a second guys, these are not the only runners.
Nathan Cleverly is in there as well.
As a Sheffield lad I'm obvioiusly delighted that Kel and Fewky are in there - and my vote would go to John - as much for his trainer as anything else.
Glyn's done a great job with him, and at last Rhodes has the chance to have a Champ in the camp.

I will say Fewkes out of those nominated.

But do not get too over excited by him. Not seen that extra special side yet to make him a world contender.

Unfortunately I agree... Its the lack of power that will be his undoing I'm afraid. Having said that, his resume in 2006/2007 holds up to any of the previous winners of this award... so he will be a deserving winner.

Don alot more than Jon Murray.

I am not sure if Fewkes will get past European class (in itself a fantastic standard to box at) but dont you just enjoy the way he goes about the job, regardless ? I know I do.

Despite his lack of dig he is a very entertaining boxer with plenty of upside to his game. He is one of the domestic fighter who I always look forward to watching, no matter who is in the other corner. There isnt really that many I can say about out of the current crop of youngsters..
