Peter Jackson out of English title fight

Post by bennie »

Halesowen hero Peter Jackson won't be fighting Ryan Rhodes for the inaugural English middleweight title on the Derby Storm bill this week after contracting a serious bout of flu. "Can you believe it," he told BoxRec. "They have offered it us a week later but I'll never be ready in time for a ten-rounder...trying to get it for January."
Jackson, 9-3, is a strong, determined fighter who really fancied his chances of upsetting former British champ Rhodes. He avenged one of his losses when he widely outpointed Mike Duffield for the Midlands Area super-middleweight title in his last fight. It put him 2-1 up in a three-fight series with Duffield and, while he was dropping down a weight for the Rhodes showdown, was keen to point out there was no strain involved. "I am a middleweight," he confirmed. "I have just fought super-middles to build up my experience."
It's a bitter blow for 27-year-old Jackson who has now seen two title opportunities fall by the wayside. He was due to challenge Wrexham's Martin "Boom Boom" Bailey for the British Masters middlweight title, only for the show's promoters to pull the plug on the show.
"My coach then rang me and asked: 'What do you think of Ryan Rhodes?' I said 'he's okay'."
Hopefully, Jacko will be okay to fight him shortly.

If Jackson was anywhere near as good as his name sake who boxed James J Corbett to a draw, Rhodes should be thankful for the withdrawl...
