All Uk fight fans should see this.

Post by WayoftheCass »

You remember when they showed the Kennedy assassination from that angle nobody had ever seen before back when Jim Garrison took the incident to the courts back in the early 70s everyone was shocked. I mean they knew it happened but that angle , I think it was the Zapruder tape, actually showed you his head being caved in and everyone gasped.
Well here fro me is the boxing equivalent for a UK fight fan. Its the end of the Benn-McClellan fight but with the US commentary. I felt I had to show it because its such a perfect example of disgustingly biased analysis by Ferdie Pacheco that it has to be seen to be believed.
I mean he was always a poor commentator who was in Don King's back pocket but this footage shows you a great example of how you can actually con people into believing that something is different to what they're seeing with their own eyes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk93Ry2s ... ed&search=

For a start Pacheco bangs on like Benn stuck the nut on McClellan. The replay clearly shows a graze at worst. After seeing this Pacheco stutters and hesitates but then rediscovers his convictions and continues to allege foul play before he and his cohort decide to start claiming that it was Benn's dreadlocks (thats right his f*cking dreadlocks:o ) caused McClellan to go down in the 9th.
Then he shows how truly despicable his is by continuously hammering on about why did McClellan quit? Now i know its easy to allege that with hindsight but the fact is that after such a brutal and long fight one guy throwing the towel in is not uncommon. But Pacheco can't understand it. He claims to have never seen the likes of it before which tells you how much attention he must have been paying during the likes of Duran's NO MAS and God knows how many other fights he was meant to be working.
He also even when watching the replay still can't understand what would bring McClellan to his knees. Obviously he had somehow missed the 70 odd right hands alone which Benn landed on McClellan's skull over the course of the previous 27 minutes or the fact he was sticking his gum shield out and gasping for air as early as third.
But his bullshit really starts to kick in when McClellan collapses in his corner. Not for a second does he think it could be a brain injury , after all this is only boxing where fighters hit each other over the head, but instead its instead maybe an eye injury which must have been caused by the dreadlocks ( though at this stage and obviously hoping the replay has faded from viewer's memories Ferdie is once again referring to it as the 'butt'). He then moves onto a neck injury due to a neck brace being applied. Obviously the 'fight doctor' was never taught that neck braces are applied as standard in all causes of possible head trauma which would be a more likely occurrence from blows to it as opposed to hurting your neck somehow. In amongst it all though Ferdie actually has the brass balls to claim a DQ might be order in favour of Gerald. Mmmmmmm. Interesting interpretation of the rules there old boy. So what your saying is in your logic I could be butted in say the first (or in this case 'dread-locked') and then take a knee when ever I feel later in the bout and simply call in a dq as I blame it on the earlier butt.
Obviously Ferdie is either a complete Muppet or he's simply clutching at straws.
I'm so glad this moron no longer works telecasts. He was always poor but his bias towards King fighters was astounding and his reading of the game was bizarre.
Bit of a rant but honestly compare the above footage to the English commentary. They saw a great fight while Ferdie was claiming a miscarriage of justice at the end. GIT! :TU:

I always thought that 'The Fight Doctor' was a Grade-A w@nker myself with little knowledge and insite to offer.

In his defence the ending was unusual to say the least and at first I am sure Jim Watt called it 'a bottle job' on McLellan's part, with his heart going out of the fight. He quickly revised that opinion when it became apparent that there were medical problems.

That 'dreadlock KO' theory was preally Freddie at his straw-clutching worst though wasnt it? :o

Verbal: According to one report ('War, Baby' by Kevin Mitchell) McClellan was showing signs of damage - uncontrolled blinking, inabilty to comprehend, from fairly early in the fight.

is it possible that benns power at his peak was such that even his hair could knock you cold?
that is the most ridiculous, misinformed yank biased commentary i have ever heard. astonishing. we saw nigel whack g-man powerfully to the head, a great shot, for the first kd. (delayed effect).
second one g-man was caught by a good uppercut, remember this is nigel benn throwing the punches, the fight had swayed strongly towards the brit for a round or two at that point. gerald took a knee as would most men. when he didnt get up, i thought like jim watt he had bottled it/or found benn's massive display of heart and aggression under all that gerald had thrown at him, too much and - quite understandably - quit. i still think there is something in this although geralds condition has the final say.
thanks for the post and the link. pacheco was bang out of order in his comments.

great to see the brilliant denny mancini again

Ferdie was bad but he comes out with a corker in rd 2 his side kick comments on Benn looking at Frank Bruno at the end of rd 1 as if for inspiration Ferdi relies "he is the last person he should be looking for inspiration from "
Also the referee in rd 1 when Benn was on the ropes under attack just before he goes through them , the ref jumps in ! was it to stop the fight ?
split second later Nigel goes through them.
After the barrage Nigel took in the first minute and half what other refs would of let this carry on.
I could easily See all our leading British referees stopping this fight at that point or near the 2 min mark as nigel never landed a telling blow till then.
Peter Manfredo was not taking as much as what Nigel was and was stopped.
Is it better to bring Your Joe Cortez and other alike in from across the world to Ref world title fights in Britian especially potential explosive contests like Benn V McClellan was back then.

Benn's punches had a lot to do with it. Benn could take McClellan's. He got up in the 1st and 8th. McClellan couldn't take Benn's.

Yep good post WayoftheCass. Pacheco has always been an overrated shill, riding on Ali's coat tails for all it was worth. He'd NEVER have got a job in American broadcast otherwise, his commentary has always been off the mark, going back to the 80's. Though this Benn fight was a real low point in his career.

He was eventualy fired when the TV stations realised he was actualy getting worse, or senile, and he had to be shoved out the door kicking and screaming, I heard.

Never heard that and I seriously doubt it. Let's face it, no one knocked out the G Man - his chin was too good for his own good.

Plus Manny has been highly critical of McClellan's camp leading up to the fight, and the rubbish seconds he hooked up with, yet never mentioned the supposed gym ko's. Never happened, I'm sure of it.

don't know why you keep calling the punch ridiculous. he was tired and he missed a wide right hook before the head grazed. you may recall, it ws a gruelling fight. ultimately, mclellan was in deep shit from when benn started using head movement and hard hooks. g-man's punches were too long and he couldn't really land clean apart from rds 1 and 8.

the most ridiculous shot I ever saw was a similar one by Jeff Lacy in round one, when he was in full contol of himself. He wanged an amateurish hook, head butted Tsypko (1st fight) and the fight was a no contest because of it. waste of time, training, everything. I ripped Lacy for that and basically got attacked by some guy on the current scene for trying to undermine a great fighter.

McClellan made a habit of drying himself out. He had been talking about headaches since the Julian Jackson fight. I think it finally caught up with him.

I read one observer saying that in a fight previous that gerlad was so dehydrated at the weigh in that his skin seemed to have got paler.

I also read that Gerald was not training as he should have done.

The commentary shows why so many American posters believe there was an injustice. I think Benn was lucky to get through the first round but after that you can't say anythign against the win. One of the greatest by a British boxer.

wasnt aware of that..any idea of what round? i'm clearly open to contrasting POVs on this than mine...but even if there was evidence of trouble early in the fight, the rabbit punches might be discounted or minimized in the role they played...but that flying headbutt DEFINITELY played a major part---the last straw for sure---the straw that "broke the camel's back" as the old adage goes, coming as it did so near to the end!! :TU:
ive got the fight on dvd it starts in round 7, which is about as long as I can bear to watch it these days. Gaping mouth gumshield half out, and the blinking starts both become more pronounced as the fight goes on.

Benn landed a lot more power punches in the fight. I think what saw Benn through was he had learned to think about what he was doing, unlike the Watson and first Eubank fights when he steamed in and ran out of gas. Against McClellan, he used a much better strategy and was much defensively better than McClellan, who relied on his raw power and speed which he believed would blow Benn away. Pretty much like Benn did in his earlier years

J - I'm sure warning signs were given earlier than that. I'll probably bore you all to death but I did a fairly comprehensive retro piece on the fight here:

http://www.boxing-monthly.co.uk/content/0502/one.htm

You're right mate, it's very hard to watch and I think last time I did was for research when I did the piece.

In other words, gerald is brain damaged so that means the ref should have stopped it. classic revisionist nonsense. benn staged one of the greatest fightbacks in modern boxing history.

I guess you don't remember McCellan rushing in before the ref told them to fight on. Trying to fight before the action has reommenced.
