I am told Fight Academy have signed the Spaniard Kiko Martinez.

Fight Academy signed him a couple of months ago. Spoke to someone in Belfast who was excited by the signing.

Got told he was nervous at the weigh in and in the hotel this morning and he looked a bit perplexed waiting in the ring, but he can bang so it looks a good signing.

True, I looked at his record and the only step up he had went the distance so I thought his power was overrated but bloody hell... Martinez was fantastic!

Brilliant result for Spanish boxing, they badly need it.

Dennis Hobson is with Martinez on TV now.

A lot of the their team had money on a 1st round win.

What is Hobson going to do with Martinez though. Same as what Jackson Asiku's promoter has done? Same as what Warren has done for David Gueraullt.

He should be more than an undercard fighter. Okay, Pickering could easily be made and acceptable..... but then what. I just cannot see Hobson being too interested in paying sanctioning fee's for a non British fighter. I cannot see Martinez not being happy fighing in non title fights.

I think you could be wrong Stu.

What I mean by that is. Hobson could have the option now of bringing Dunne over to the UK for a rematch with Martinez and there are some good fights to be matched with Brits.

If Martinez still came out a winner out of all them, he would then be talking about World Titles.

Hope so, don't get me wrong. Just don't think the signing of Europeans / Foreign fighters work... and are usually a short sighted acquisitions (e.g. Warren's signings to try and beat Hamed and Hatton)

Hobson missed out on Oganov. Now he has a puncher in Martinez and with Hobson having a Setanta contract we'll see more of this guy. It's the Euro title so he may get some fights though he may get ducked blatantly.

He could call out Hunter, Pickering, etc. But would they want to fight him?

As has been said, he could go the way of Romanov and Asiku which would be sad.

Before the fight promotion was settled, Hobson was trying to have the fight whisked away to Spain. It's in Boxing News about a month ago. Maybe he believed in Martinez beforehand. Maybe he wanted to have part of the promotion and a piece of the guy in case he won (which he did), as well as a good TV fight.

Hobson's signing of Martinez was a serious one and they have signed Martinez on a reasonably long contract.

Well it all depends on the money, but when this news was being circulated I thought that maybe he had signed Martinez to try and get a piece of Dunne's box office in the future. I'm meaning rematch and future options on Dunne should Dunne beat Martinez.

Stu I have amended my previous post.

Martinez could defend against Dunne in the UK, theres a show where the venue will be full. Against Pickering or Hunter. Hunter brings plenty to the table, but I think he has moved up a weight.

There are a number of UK boxers rated by the EBU. Hobson has plenty of options.

Wrong there Stu. It was a mandatory defence thus no options could be written into the contracts.

It was a good signing which people have kept quiet.

I doubt Dunne will want to jump right back in there with Martinez anyway, and likely he'd be forced to come to Spain for a rematch.

Dunne needs a confidence builder in his return and then a decent Euro level operator if he wants to get back on track fast.

Sorry I meant option on Dunne in a rematch, not this fight.

Hunter has moved up and not going back down if his interviews are to be believed, so isn't that only 2 Brits in the EBU ratings? Maybe Issac Ward might be there.

I just think history says that such signings never work. Maybe if Hobson wants to spend some time in Spain... then yes, Martinez might be a ticket seller in Spain.

TVE (The national broadcaster) banned boxing from TV in Spain in the 1980s.

Outrageous... typical politicians diguised as TV executives dictating to the people what they should see.

Boxing was huge in Spain in the 1960s and 1970s with big stars such as Pedro Carrasco, Jose Urtain, Miguel Velasquez etc.

A good heavyweight might bring back interest.

It wasn't as long as he kept Pickering waiting, that was about a half hour.

I think the fight itself lasted 64 seconds.
