Spoiler - Magee v Oakey

Post by Albert »

Messy fight as expected.

For me Magee looked sluggish. He simply did not do enough to win the title off Oakey.

Magee tried to steal the fight by just using the jab. Hardly used any combinations.

Judges:

113-116 Magee
114-114 Draw
114-114Draw

Majority Draw

Magee won the fight handily IMO, the 116-113 verdict was spot on.

Oakey was missing wildly, Magee had a much better punch success.

Whilst I agree with what you are saying about Oakey. My point is Magee did not do enough to win the fight. Throwing single punches was not good enough.

As for Setanta claiming their programme is live is bollocks!!!

If they are RTE aren't.

Next fight on Setanta is Andy Lee which has just been on RTE.

Has Mike Goohall done a blunder, or has the BBC.

Both pretty common I'm afraid.

Bloody hell.

Even if the BBC have got the scores right, it still goes down as a majority draw.

Shocking show on Setanta so far. I thought this was going to be a live bill.

Great to hear that Gary Jacobs is alive and well but there has to be better options when it comes to assisting the main commentator (who isn't up to much either). His starting a sentence with a 3 second mumble is distracting in the extreme.

Before we put everyone off from ever buying the channel, let's face it. We'd be moaning if Sky or ITV wouldn't pick it up. We still get the fights even if they're a few mins behind. Presentation may not be the best, but getting 3 hrs coverage ain't bad. Plus the dodgy aspect ratio thing has been fixed. This is a big show with some good fighters. Fvcking hell. We get loads more boxing now. This is good.

I agree. The more boxing the better. Setanta's screening of Hatton v Castillo was very good. In addition they have bought some good fights to our screens and more will follow.

Very true, but wouldn't it be CHEAPER for Setanta to use the home broadcasters commentators.

I agree with what you are saying, but Jacobs in making Duke McKenzie sound like Jim Watt.

Quite right Stu.

AB we are grown ups for fvck sack and if we want to watch boxing we are more than likely willing to pay for the privilege. I am not likely to cancel my subscription because it is good to see more boxing available. But in paying for it I am more than entitled to criticise when the presentation of the product is below par. Tonight it was well below par. And that is before even mentioning the Jacobs first KD slip when it was clear Dunne took two heavy shots.

Richie Woodhall, as always, was the only redeeming feature.

Woodhall was good.

How long before Setanta grab Darke? or is he more interested in football.

I thought Dempsey was presenting boxing on Setanta?

Thought Oakey won 7 rounds to 5 clearly. Magee sucks and could not keep up the moments when he was good.

watched it in a pub with no sound. didn't score the rounds but had Magee winning, thought his punches were much cleaner, although he is a long way from Woods if that is what he is aiming for

Maybe they thought, "ah, let's have a Scottish expert commentator like whatsisname". Sadly, Jacobs lacks the precision to clearly elucidate what's on his mind. He speaks in a drawl whereas Watt talks in a clipped manner more suited to ringside.

Jacobs would be better on the studio panel and Richie Woodhall would have been better ringside.

Woodhall's a very articulate person.

Of course, Woods will be favoured, but actually think Magee has the style to give Woods a few problems.

I was a little dissapointed in Woods in his last fight. I thought Johnson won (just), but definately thought Glen was doing a much better job than in the previous two meetings untill he gassed.

I thought so much for the "new improved Woods". I just thought it re-iterated just how overated Gonzales was.

Dean Francis beats Oakey and Magee on the same night... Although, I his style would suit Woods better than Magee's.

Woods clearly improved. The first 2 Johnson fights he had no stamina and fought defensively. The 3rd fight he was stronger, fought an offensive fight, which turned out to be a classic. I had him winning the 3rd fight.

Glen was only landing harder punches than the earlier fights because Woods engaged him.

If Francis still has problems with his shoulder, fighting Magee will be as bad as fighting Barney. If he has 2 arms he wins. He'll batter Oakey.

I am astounded you think Magee could give Woods problems. Do you know much about boxing?

He happens to know quite a lot , which makes the comment a bit odd for me as no matter how well Magee would do against Woods I think he would eventually get chinned .

I had Woods beating Johnson(just thought I'd throw that in) .

"A few problems" is what i said also saying that Woods would be favoured. Think you both have misread how I meant that. Demarcus Corley gave Miguel Cotto "a few problems", Scott Lawton gave Jon Thaxton "a few problems".

I think style wise the fight could be competitive. I know Woods was pretty very dry at Super Middle... but David Starie gave him a boxing lesson. Before, I get misread again I am not tipping Starie to give Woods a whalloping if Starie ever came back. However, Woods hasn't really fought a back foot fighter since Starie. Most of Woods' fights (except Ashley) its been the other fighter on the front foot and Woods countering. Woods might take a few to work out fighting a negative fighter like Magee. He might find it odd that he is being counter punched, and not doing the counting punching. This might give him "a few problems". Eventually I think Woods will get to him, but Magee could cause problems.

Francis on the other hand will probably be aggresive vs Woods... This would suit Woods and thats why I think Francis would be an easier fight for Clinton than Magee (even though I think Francis would beat Magee). Although, I would like to see more of Dean's comeback. If he is at 90% the fighter he was in the mid 90's... then he beats the lot, quite clearly.

Clinton Woods v Brian Magee is a complete mismatch. Dress it how on earth you like, styles this and that, mismatch is the only word for it.

Froch vs Magee was no mismatch, Magee vs Reid was no mismatch. It shows that Magee can hang in world class.

Froch Isn't world class and If he does become that, he Isn't yet.

Wasn't Reid on the slide by then.

Depends on your definition I supoose of world class.... If its only partially unified champions that are world class then no. But surely you would tip Froch do beat Berrio?
