In digging through records of the day, I've come across reports of wins for white hope Tom McCarty (Battling Levinsky and Charlie Weinert) that are reported in Boxrec as losses. These were, I believe newspaper wins. While examining the contemporary records, I came across an interesting article in a Canadian newspaper complaining about the confusion over newspaper decisions. The editor sited one case of a bout between Leach Cross and Charlie White which took place in New York. Two major New York dailies covered the match and each reported a different winner. The writer inferred from these reports that the confusion was caused by the rivalry between the two papers. Food for thought.

Yes, the media has always reeked.Cap wrote:In digging through records of the day, I've come across reports of wins for white hope Tom McCarty (Battling Levinsky and Charlie Weinert) that are reported in Boxrec as losses. But in the older days the direct quotes and comments from fighters and trainers themselves were prevalent and are of value.
In recent years there is nothing but propaganda in the media when it comes to boxing.

agree
you both make very good points on this and I fully agree with you.I have often read reports of fights from the press and been confused by the differences in them. The writers in the media in my view have one thing as top of their agenda which is "NEVER let the truth get in the way of a good story"
the best thing about the oldtime writers was they at least put the effort into doing some substantial reprts rather than the "sound bite" we get today
