Longest shots
Malcolm Franklin,Danny Garcia nd Kimdo Bethel
I'll ask.If there are no videocameras allowed, is there going to be a DVD we can purchase?
In light of what happened in 2004, I would hope so.but I also understand that USA Boxing decided to make it an all AIBA event,
Not a matter of condoning - that's the way international officiating is and our kids need to get prepared.hence they are condoning the "let them fight" mentality?
So, get me on a tech!!!!This is a USA Boxing event, is it not, not an AIBA event(not paid for by AIBA),
USA Boxing doesn't have ANY word on how AIBA officials conduct their duties.so ultimately USA Boxing would have the last word.
Have I not already agreed on this point - and explained why?But the chatter I have been hearing from multiple souces is that it has been pretty rough and lax at times.
BTW - excellent bout tonight between Thurman and Porter.

shame on that ref for disqualifying wade. the first point i would agree with and mabye the last point the ref took away from wade because of the holding. i definitely do not agree with the second point taken away. ref seemed favorable to porter. he committed just as many fouls imo. And i know im prolly a little biased since i wanted wade to win but i think some of the other opinions on this board about this fight were pretty biased towards porter. some people here really like the kid.

Luke - I saw the videos before they were removed. I think that USAB would prefer that bouts not be recorded so that the officiating can't be scrutinized by everyone. Sort of like a lot of physicians who will no longer allow people to videotape the births of their children - they were getting sued and the Plaintiffs had video proof of their screw-ups.zhdamistro wrote:shame on that ref for disqualifying wade. the first point i would agree with and mabye the last point the ref took away from wade because of the holding. i definitely do not agree with the second point taken away. ref seemed favorable to porter. he committed just as many fouls imo. In regard to the Friday bout between Russell and Marroquin - you could definitely tell who was from Texas. Anytime Marroquin landed a punch the crowd went nuts. If Gary landed a punch there was a small crowd around the camera that would yell - hmmm, perhaps Luke and the other guys from the small DC area contingent. I thought Russell should have won by RSC-O he dominated so much and that wasn't even close to his best performance. It looked to me as if Gary is not in as good of shape as he used to be.
In regard to the Porter - Wade bout, the DQ was perfectly legit. Wade hit Porter in the back of the head 3 times while Porter's head was in between and outside of the ropes. That is the same as hitting someone while they are down. He probably should have been DQ'd right then. Next, he was cautioned so many times for holding, wrestling, pushing/pulling down on Porter's head that the ref should have taken away points sooner and the DQ should have been earlier. In regard to the scoring, I had Wade winning the first round 7-5, but from then on Porter was winning the rounds. Porter 6-2 in round 2, Porter 12-4 round 3 and 5-1 in round 4 before the bout was stopped. Granted this is from Luke's video angle at a distance.
Russell won again just as I predicted and Raynell Williams won the deciding bout just as I thought he would. It is a shame though because I like Raynell and Hylon both. They are both young and very skilled.
Now instead of complaining about who made the team and who didn't, I am just going to support those who did. I want to see at least 3 medals. We have to do better than '04. The first step is to make sure we get a full 11 member team going to Beijing.
From what I read, it sounds like Hylon is going to take a break from boxing now; have fun his senior year, get his driver's license, and then I suppose after he turns 18 and graduates they'll look at turning pro.
I agree with you though Dennis; I hope the team does better than 04, but I think we've got a shot. I think Rau'shee will do very well and is a good shot for Gold; Luiz Yanez has a good chance I think, and Demetrius Andrade at 152 I think is a medal contender. Raynell could do well; it depends on his draw; same with a lot of weight classes. Chris Downs is big; much bigger than Andre Ward and Ward managed a Gold Medal. We'll just have to see; I think it's funny that our best medal bets seem to be little guys when traditionally the USA has been at higher weight classes (and it's bad when I'm considering 125 and up a higher weight class).

That's why I thought it wasn't such a bad thing for Mike Wilson to be 24 if he wants to turn pro. I thought it took them a while to grow into their bodies anyway (taking me forever, at least). Whereas it seems Rau'shee Warren is on top of it all and really hitting his stride; yet he's only what, 21 or so? He only hit the drinking age and he's getting ready for his second Olympics.Dennis wrote:Kolya - big guys tend to need to mature more than the smaller guys if they want a chance at winning a medal. You even see that in the pro ranks. Hunter will have his work cut out for him.

Hylon said that he's looking forward to being an alternate and going to Colorado Springs and helping Raynell prepare for Chicago. Today is his first day of his senior year of HS.
Also, Shawn Porter said he'd welcome the opportunity to be an alternate and would take any offers to fight internationally over the next 1-2 years before turning pro.

Attendence
I know none of us really want to acknowledge it but...
The crowds were really really dissappointing, IMO.
Lots of entertainment options in Houston, and hard to advertise to every demographic, as well, with school beginning today, last week was the last week of vacation for many families, and out of town... but..
Mon-Thursday the crowds were paltry during the day and only a few hundred in the evening. Friday wasnt much better. Saturday I think there was approaching 2000 or so, and almost nobody there on Sunday despite it being FREE.
Media attendence wasnt too impressive either with only a few newspapers there every day. Saturday was well represented, but other than that, there was only about half a dozen people covering the event daily.
If it was the gymnastics trials or even judo or taekwondo, the crowds woulda been much bigger..
It's a sad state of affairs for boxing in the U.S.
It's certainly not the athletes fault, there were plenty of future stars and potential medalists competing.
Advertising/Marketing is certainly one issue, but moreso is the apathy amongst the sports media and general sports fan public.

My earlier prediction was three medals, and I'll stick with that. I don't know that any of the results from this week have changed my mind, although Russell's struggles need to get fixed. However, the Cuban situation definitely helps, since it means that Russell and Andrade are not going to get drawn with Rigo or Lara in the first round of the Olympics.
Of course, qualification first, and I think 9 out of 11 might be the result again. I'll need to take a look at the American competition again, but I think Ali, Estrada and Wilder might all have to go down to the last moment to get in.
I do think that after this Olympics, when the scoring gets revamped, we'll start to see some improvement in US success again.
EDIT - having had a look, I think Sadam Ali should be okay - 132 is not a strong weight in the Americas and Crawford did fine in Pan Am qualifying. 165 seems doable as well for Estrada. I think Wilder might be in the worst position to qualify.

Any word
Any word on what boxers are going to try and qualify for other countries yet ? I expect there must have been some talk at the venue about these scenerios.
I figure Mike Wilson,Miguel Gonzalez,Keith Thurman and Danny Jacobs could all be looking at options.
